Bartholomeusz neck injury? disc problems? I've heard 3 weeks at this stage. Bugger. Now throw in Shepherd (quad), Brown (shoulder) and Cross (achilles). Cummins is still a month away. We're in a bit of poop.

What is the status with Daruda? I'd have him back unless we can somehow bring back B. James. Top14 home-away finishes late April. How many weeks of finals do they have? No chance.

Stephano Hunt? How far away is this guy? Some say at least a year. Anyone familar with his 2009 form in QLD? Can he kick and tackle? Get him in there!

So, perhaps in six weeks, the backline will be at full strength:

Sheehan - <insert flyhalf here>/Bartho
O'Connor - Cross
Cummins - Shepherd - Sare

bench: O Young, Harris, Bartho/Haylett-Petty

Are we talking about the real world here or a fantasy pick?

Fantasy pick - easy: James or Warwick, two of the best performers in pro club rugby in Europe. Sorted.

Real world - club coaches in Europe won't release their players unless they are real duds and they want to save paying their salaries. But, Catch 22, who would want such a player?

They may take a punt on Scott Daruda returning. Last I heard he had thrown the toys out of the cot at Agen because it was too cold, but I haven't heard anything since.

When the Japanese comp finishes soon (and I'm not sure what the date is this year) their players could be available if their contracts are up, but the good ones would already be signed up for next year. Catch 22 again. Otherwise the Force would get Jimmy Hilgendorf back in a flash though it could compromise his Japanese residency - and he wants to play in the 2011 RWC for them.

Next we have to look at Oz players. There are a few good club flyhalves in Sydney that aren't world beaters but they have good footie brains. The Reds got the best guy not under contract - Tim Walsh of Randwick, but someone like Dave Harvey of Gordon would be good value. He mostly plays 12 these days and sometimes fullback, but he is a better flyhalf than Sam Harris on his best day.

There are a couple of teenagers who are in Academies, Rob Coleman (Brumbies) and Ben Seymour (Tahs), who could be released to get experience. I saw them both last week in Twos games and they were great at that level but you wouldn't want them learning on the job.

And even though Josh Gamgee was demoted to 2nd Grade at Manly it was only to give a young gun Seymour his time in the sun. He could be smokey if you want a good footie player who is better than Harris.

I for one are glad the Force are in this position they were greedy bastards from the get go & they've let go of three good flyahlves in Brock James, Jimmy Hilgendorf & Scott Daruda in the last 3 or so years and these were players they should have groomed for the future.

Instead they poach Giteau & send these blokes OS.

Real world is the key I think - 90%+ of replacements named will never happen, sadly. Including Jimmy H, unless he wants to give up his World Cup dream. How much would that cost?

How about a desperate cry to Larkham? That real world thing bites again...

Dale Harvey was teh first that sprung to my mind, too. But what about Kelly? Noddy mentioned him as well I think. He did well enough in the MARC and Syd Uni at 10. Has he been in 2nd grade though? I didn't see much of him last season.

It looks to me that the Japanese season is coming to an end. That sold release some players, even if only for an "off-season" tour of duty in the S14.

10) Hunt 11) Sare 12) Cross 13) Inman 14) DHP 15) O'Connor

They should just go with that, no point trying to be conservative against the 'canes so go all out attack and see if Hunt is up to it. Cross has already proven himself capable at 12 with Aus A.

Start Dunning on the bench so if it's like Friday and we need a dropgoal in the last 20 we can bring him on.

They could blood a Victorian fellow. There are a couple of decent 10s in Vic and I'm sure they could convince the Rebels to partly subsitise it.

They wont, but they could. At very least it would be good for Australian Rugby.

Battered Force search for playmakerThe West Australian
February 15, 2010, 7:25 am

The West Australian ©

The Western Force have begun a worldwide search for a new playmaker after being given dispensation to recruit a new marquee player to replace injured former Springbok Andre Pretorius.

And 2006 Force player of the year Scott Staniforth is back in Perth from Japan and may be re-signed to replace the injured Cameron Shepherd.

The club has already spoken with former Force foundation member James Hilgendorf.

The 27-year-old fly-half spent three years with the Force before moving to Japanese club Kobe and would be keen to return to Perth as Pretorius takes up a contract with Kobe next season.

Hilgendorf, who spent his last season on the Force injury list, made 15 appearances in his first two seasons.

He is best known for being on the end of a tackle by Blue Rua Tipoki in 2006 that left him with a fractured eye socket and almost ended his career.

Another ex-Force foundation member, Scott Daruda, 24, who recently quit Agen in France because of lack of game time and homesickness, is not on the Force radar.

The Force received permission from the ARU's high performance manager, David Nucifora, to recruit another overseas Test player because Pretorius is out for the season after tearing his left hamstring from the bone.

ARU rules allow a club to recruit one overseas marquee player and a development player who would become available for Wallabies selection.

"The ARU has given us the OK to go for another overseas player, replacing like with like," Force rugby manager Mitch Hardy said.

"They were very reasonable in discussions. We have spoken with several players and hope to hear back from them soon."

He said any recruit would not be available for Saturday's clash with the Hurricanes in Wellington, but he was hopeful of having a player signed for the round-three clash against the Waikato Chiefs at ME Bank Stadium.

"It would be a very long shot to have a new player available for Saturday, but we'll find a solution for that game," Hardy said.

The loss of Pretorius and a neck injury to second-string fly-half Mark Bartholomeusz that is likely to rule him out for a month, forced the experiment of playing centre Sam Harris in the playmaker's role in the 24-15 loss to the ACT Brumbies on Friday night.

To add the their woes, No. 8 Richard Brown may need a right shoulder reconstruction after dislocating it against the Brumbies.

Shepherd looks like being out for at least a month with a hip injury, prop Matt Dunning suffered mild concussion and winger Haig Sare, a late inclusion in Friday's line-up, is still being treated for an Achilles problem.

I am prepared to pray to the rugby gods that Hilgendorf and Staniforth return to the Force...... just one of them would be a blessing.. :)

Poor buggers - not a lot of sympathy for them north of the Tweed I expect, but I agree with disco that they didn't do enough with James and Daruda.

James had shown so much promise with Taranaki that the Canes wanted to recruit him. The NZRFU put the kibosh on that because he could never be eligible to play for NZ. Eventually I think the Force got a bit shy of somebody who was injured so much in 2 years at the Reds and the Force. It's ironic that he hasn't missed a lot of games for Clermont since his tenure there started.

Daruda - Remember that he signed with Agen after the 2009 Super14 and long after Giteau said he was going back to the Brumbies, at the start of the 2009 S14. They should have done better in keeping him though you never know: maybe he just wanted to experience rugby overseas at a young age. Who knows also- maybe he is trouble. Agen would think so.

But if he was let go for rugby reasons I think they were in error: he didn't get a lot of time at 10 naturally enough, but he looked pretty good in the odd game he had at 12.
