Our winter sports will start this weekend. Altho I will miss all of saturdays S14 matches except the SA derby, I am look forward to walk the line again with the schoolboy sport. My kid plays against Mikro ( a KuilsRiver Prymary school that won a court case against the local government for forcing them into educating english and won) in Kuils River.

Anyway I find this article about our biggest rivals , die Galpille or Paarl Boishaai or Paarl Boys High sums school rugby and the Paarl vibe up nicely.

saschoolsport
Dis 'n Boishaai Ding..'n Lekker Lekker Boishaai Ding!

Walking around Paarl Boys' High on a crisp Autumn morning is like heaven for a rugby lover. I still hold many a fond memory of this grand old school from my playing days when we would trek out to Paarl to pit ourselves against some of the best of the Boland.

The delicious pancakes and delicacies dished out by the beaming "tannies" was reason enough for throngs to make the journey but what really endeared me to this seemingly sleepy town was the love for the game. It is present in the very fibre of a Paarlite, in every brick in every wall and in embedded deep in the lush, rich soil of this rugby-mad town. While they might be sworn enemies on Interskole day, both Boishaai and Gimmies (Paarl Gym) are the pride of every single citizen of this proud town and when either play against opposition sides they receive the full support of the other.

That is the beauty of living in a small, passionate town like this. I would find it hard to see any Rondebosch boy even choose to look twice at a Bishops boy forget about supporting him in a rugby game against another side. But the boys from Paarl seem to embody camaraderie and this peters out substantially on the rugby field. Many a year I have heard sour-grapes from Cape Town when many a armchair critic voices his opinion about the amount of boys hailing from the Boland region who have been chosen for the WP Craven Week side, but if they only came out here and felt a part of the heritage, the culture, the passion and the enjoyment I am sure every single one of them would say, "Ah, so this is the reason."

One can't deny that it's the people that have made Boishaai the success they are today. It's more like one massive family than a school. And the family members are as warm as the fine wine which this region is famous for. No matter who you are, big fish or seemingly insignificant they will roll out the red carpet treatment for you. They make you feel like you belong. These are the building blocks upon which a successful sporting school is built on.

Its been almost a year since the boys from the Winelands had their dream rugby season, topping it off with that oh-so-famous victory over Gimmies in the 2009 Interskole. Many raised doubts as to whether this was a flash in the pan but coaches Elmo Wolfaardt and Richard Visagie have been hard at work to ensure that the Boishaai 1st XV of 2010 continues the success of the 2009 vintage... and then some.

The two Boishaai stalwarts have been hard at work since October last year laying the foundations for the 2010 stock to have a successful season. While most other top schools were rounding off their 2009 rugby season, the non-Matrics who were contenders for 1st XV spots were hard at work preparing for trials! Most schools often hold trials in early February but Elmo and Richard know how important it is to build a team atmosphere.

Once a squad was selected the chosen ones began Monday skills sessions throughout the Fourth Term, breaking only for the Christmas holidays from early December onwards and already the foresight of the coaches are bearing glorious fruit in Boishaai's pre-season games, the first of which was against Oudtshoorn which they comprehensively won 50 - 0. Matches against an FNB Invitational XV followed which was won 52 - 10 as well as a match against HTS Belville at the Brackenfell Sports Day which was won 70 - 0.

Newlands Rugby Day:

The traditional pre-season schools rugby day which takes place annually pitted Boishaai againt old foes Rondebosch. It was an unforgettable experience for many of the Boishaai players, many of whom will only once in their lives experience playing on such a hallowed turf.

The match itself was far from the greatest spectacle with both teams committing silly errors, classically indicative of pre-season rustiness. Nevertheless there never seemed to be any doubt as to who the dominant side was as Boishaai ran out comprehensive 25 - 0 winners against a lackluster "Bosch" side.

What did make the experience an incredible one was turning around to peek at the famous Newlands Grand Stand and seeing nearly 1000 boys proudly displaying the Boishaai uniform singing and cheering in unison. It was something that brought back fond memories of Saturday afternoons and was clearly quite the excursion for the boys.

Team Structure:

So what does make Boishaai successful? Surely it can't purely be passion? Agreed while passion does play an integral part in their success it is their intelligent team structure that is really what makes them formidable opposition. The 1st and 2nd XV's operate as one squad with the 2nd's made up mostly of Grade 11's. This is essential as the common curse of schoolboy 1st XV teams is the excuse that most of our Matrics have left and now we're stuck with a bunch of Grade 11's who are not as good as the Matrics of last year. The Boishaai system ensures that Grade 11 players are exposed to the coaching environment and structures they can expect at 1st XV level so that when their time arrives the following season they step into their respective 1st XV berths with consummate ease. This in the long-term ensures a constant stream of successful 1st XV's instead of a "once in every few years" story.

Both Elmo and Richard also involve all coaches at all levels in their weekly meetings meaning that should any player in the 1st XV get injured, both Elmo and Richard know exactly the strengths and weaknesses of their back-up players. It is also essential that the rugby is kept to an exceptionally high level from 1st XV level right down to U14E as different players peak at different times and ensuring that all teams are successful means that late bloomers are identified quickly instead of being lost in the system.

Upcoming Fixtures:

Boishaai have a fixture list which is reminiscent more of a professional rugby side than a schoolboy side. The prime objective is the St. John's Easter Festival which will be the real litmus test as to where the side stands in comparison with other top sides in the country. They will be playing Helpmekaar, Nelspruit and then a big game against Jeppe, fresh from their victory in their Classic Clash with KES.

The boys have brief respite from their hectic schedule before heading to what is fast becoming a prestigious schools rugby tournament, namely the Wildeklawer Schools Rugby Tournament, consisting of arguably the top 10 rugby sides in the country. This year's edition will be taking place at Affies no less and Boishaai will face their biggest task yet against the kings of KZN in Glenwood.

So the future bodes well for this great South African school. Time will tell whether or not this season will be one for the ages but having so far passed through all their pre-season games unbeaten, take it from me, this will be a team to remember. I emphasise the word TEAM as this is exactly what they are. There are no Bryan Habana's or Jaque Fourie's, but 15 players who are willing to sacrifice everything for their teammates on a rugby field. This is what makes them a champion side.

Make me think??? , they have been great last year and surely the Top rugby school in the western cape, myself know Elmo very good , he has learn his coaching trade at Gimmies but they poached him and we'll sufer for years to come.

Gimmies will play Rondebosch this weekend and next week end Grey Bloem. They havent played Bloem for ages , and surely will be a hard game for our lot. We have lost already over the Easter against Klaofies "Waterkloof" , so not a good sign.

The U13s get caps! That is great... It's no wonder rugby is so strong at Gim when there's that much emphasis on it.

Yep its a age old Gimmie tradition gpoing back since year dot. We have what we call a Big Brag for rugby , hockey and netball. Each team get presented by their captains in front of the whole school with the first teams of the schools the highlight. They play a short slide show DvD before this to show them progress through the year up until the Interschools, first team captains do their speech and then the players get capped before the whole school with a special first team tie (around Taighs neck) which they are allowed to wear from the event. Can promise you my kid told me his fellow class mates (he is only grade 5 , standard 3 in the old days) just wants to touch the tie and any Klein Gimmies dream to wear at school.

Today its rugby and 14 teams from age group U7B to U13A will play at Faure street Stadium. School close at 10h00 and the main game, U13As will play at 16h15.

Just to show the versatility and the emphasis the Paarl schools puts on mass participating in sport , 7 of the 11 KleinGim boys plays U13A rugby and hockey. 2 of the 3 WP CRaven Week players got picked for Boland U13 hockey aswell and had to choose between the rugby and hockey weeks. All 3 plays for Boland U13 cricket aswell. 7 of the 8 Klein Girlshaai netball players played for their U13A hockey team.

Voorskou - Boishaai vs Gim
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 16:10

FNB Classic Clashes action - only on rugby365.com!

Gim se rekord sover is indrukwekkend.

Interskole wedstryde is soos toetsrugby. Die ou cliché geld hier nog steeds. Die span wat druk die beste kan hanteer en die meeste koelkop kan bly staan die beste kans om te wen.

Sterkte aan altwee spanne en mag skolerugby seëvier!

Yesterday Klein Gim U13A beat Paarl Boishaai 7-0 in a tough match and breaking a two year drought on them. The man in my photo produce a cracker match. Was sitting behind Loffie Eloff and pretty sure he havent saw a 10,000 big crowd in a Prymary Schools rugby match all his life. The Gimmies went mad and attended the after match get together of all the U13A teams and was the kids flippen overjoy. All the teams was on stage and delivering speeches and the parents cheered them. The Principal deliver his speech and Klein Grey Bloem have challenge us now and will come to Paarl for this. Also announced that KleinGim have produced 5 WP U12 players, making them the bighgest WP Prymary Schools fabric at the moment. 3 U13 Craven Week, 5 WP U13 XV and 5 WP U12s. 9 backs in total, 2 scrummies, 2 flyhalfs 4 midfielders and a fullback. If you take into consideration KleinGim only have 600 boys and girls and the big schools in the Western Cape 1000+ and Boishaai 900 only boys just show the quality.

Today its girls HS hockey and netball, main game starting over a hour.

Yep and we had 18,000 plus on saturday for the main game. 19 all the scoreboard and what a game it was. Interschools between this two allways brings out the best of the players, its suppose to be hard tough, close encounters and this one will rack up right with the best. Boishaai lead for 65 minutes and once Gim got that try they nearly finihed them off and only desperate defense kept them out in the end.

Boys hockey U18A follow Klein Gim's lead and record a 5 nul win, Girls hockey we won 3-0 and netball 19-17.

Like some Gimmie old boy try to explain after the main rugby match on our way to the car: He hate a even score because he hate being the same as Boishaai sort of explain it, but then to stay unbeaten in the Western Cape with rugby, not many teams have achieved this and a very special Gimmie team this class of 2010.

I'll put up the link as soon as we have some TV footage of the match but I have to applause the prematch entertainment, Gim copy the Kaapse Klopse and Bois had a rugby player with HJS (Hoer Jongens Skool) which was the best I ever witness since attend this InterSchools from 2000.

Interschools babbelaas and looking forward to next year already.

Bloody hell a draw. As Doc said, it is like kissing your sister.
The worst part of InterSchools when your team losing is walking from Faure Stadium back to your car. Luckily that was spared this time. At least the GalPille first teams have won nothing in their first teams in both Prymary and High School and Gim have docket the golf, hockey, and prymary school rugby. They obvious dont mention this and play their we won 15 out of the 21 rugby matches but totally forgot they have 900 boys compare to Gimmies 500.

Thats sort of the beauty of InterSchools, you cant win them all, and always some positive in the total activities of InterSchools and attending a Stadium where you have 50% support in both sides in a small town like Paarl split in two, thats the place to learn the trade of sportmanship.

Hell thats nice, so Faure Stadium should be aswell. So Boet was he a great sportsman (always knew there is something special with my Stormers Tipping Team Mate)?

See La Rochelle Girls (who is situated next to the Stadium) is 150 years old this year. Paarl Gym was a boys school till 1964 and the girls went to La Rochelle.

Good stuff PB. Well done to your lad.
Dankie Oom Lee. The kid only the third one in Paarl Gym Prymary history to get in the U13A hockey team as a grade 5 and 11 year old. Want him to play rugby but he is way to small and Klein Gim have a very good side in his age group. They have 600 kids from grade 1 to 7 and only 4 U13 teams competing with schools well over 1000 kids in the Western Cape. They produce 12 players for WP U13 and U12 teams which is pretty special. Next year his Boet will coach Gym High Schools U14s and the small one sure will join in with him to give him the oppertunity to play on Gym's hockey astro and learn the trade from his Boet. Double dose of practise (U13 and U14) sure will help him making the most of his talent. Also pretty special in criccket and just missed the Boland cut.

Here is one with Paarl Gims U18A and U13A hockey teams. Both racked up InterSchools records.

Paarl Gym beat Framesby 57-6 in the Burger final on the weekend to win the Southern Cape best schoolboy award. The class of 2010 had some good and bad times. Myself havent expect much of them after the poor season in 2009 (the first bad one they had in 10 years), so the season look like this:

They lost two matches at the start of the season against Waterkloof 12-10 and Grey Bloem 23-12. The Grey loss wasnt unexpected but they had a good match and nearly snatched it. Grey Bloem undefeated this season and Gym taking them the closest during the year. The last negative to their season is not winning the Inter Schools but they havent lost it either. Inter School matches have the habit to bring out the best of both Boishaai en Gim and on the day I thought we were lucky to come away wit a draw.

The highlights of the season:
Putting up a ton against Wynberg at home.
The highest score ever against Boland Landbou 76 something.
Unbeaten against all Western Cape schools. In the past we end the season as nr1 but always seem to drop one against the WC lot(Paul Roos/Boishaai/Boland Landbou/Bishops)
Winning the Burger competition.

I'd say a deserved nr 2 SA ranking for 2010 and just a pitty we'll see this team's players squattered all over SA next year and maybe most at Maties playing Koshuis league and end up leaving rugby. Only 3 WP Craven Week players sure of a WP Academy sponsor.

Regarding my own kiddie, this weekend we travel to George to finish our winter season in style. KleinGim had a special year with their bioys and all the U13A teams will camp at Victoria Bay on the weekend and play their last matches against Outeniqua. Looking forward to this.
