RACE FOR THE FxPro SUPER RUGBY PLAYER OF THE YEAR BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE

After four rounds of the 2012 FxPro Super Rugby season the race to be crowned the Australian FxPro Super Rugby Player of the Year is starting to take shape with a number of last year’s top five polling their first votes for the season.

St.George Reds flanker, Scott Higginbotham, continues to lead the field, sitting atop the current voting with seven points from the first four games.

Having polled maximum votes in the first and third rounds, Higginbotham added to his tally last weekend with a single vote to put him three points clear of his closest rivals.

Fellow Reds teammate, Mike Harris, sits second on four points tied with HSBC Waratahs half back, Sarel Pretorius, Emirates Western Force loose forward, Matt Hodgson, and University of Canberra Brumbies fly half, Christian Lealiifano.

Last year’s winner Will Genia registered his first points in round four, polling the maximum three votes in the Reds game against the Sharks in Durban.

The Force’s captain David Pocock, who finished fifth in last year’s poll also registered his first points for the season securing three votes in his team’s one-point win over the Waratahs in Sydney.

Pocock’s former teammate turned RaboDirect Rebel, James O’Connor, who last year finished third behind Reds fly half Quade Cooper and eventual winner Genia also polled three points, his first for 2012.

Mowen, Higgers and Pocock for me. They have been consistently pretty decent - bodes well for our backrow come June.

Does it become almost impossible for someone like Pocock to win this sort of thing because everyone is used to him being the best player on the field?

Can someone explain to me how Rod Davies has 5 points?? As he wasn’t on the first list that tells me he must have scored points during the Bulls debacle...no? So that’s what Poey is doing wrong not missing enough tackles. Pull your head in Dave.

What a stupid system for handing out an award. At least wait until the end of the season and ask every journo to vote.

So, Hooper got 1 point despite being by far the most influential player on the park in that game, but Tomane got 2 points because he was in the right place to score 2 tries but really didn't contribute anything else during the match?

OK...

2 points for two tries
1 point for one try.

Duh!
