I feel as though the irb need to sort this out. are they reffing like this is the 6 nations?

I know the rules have always been clear but this one has never been policed 100%. I remember the 2003 world cup when England went off there feet at every Ruck and never got penalized for it in the final.

If the refs penalized this rule
Consistently imagine how many penalties we would have in a game? It would be ridiculous.

Maybe it should be a free kick? Something needs to happen with it. ATM the refs are penalizing it every now and then but not consistently. Probably because they Would get sore lips.

I think this is the biggest thing to
Come out of Super Rugby this year so far.

Would appreciate to here everyone's thoughts on it.

Cheers

I agree completely.
It's gotten way over the top, when teams are penalised for going off their feet when there are not even opponentes trying to counter the ruck, but the attacking team has a player who binds on the player on the ground and leans on his arms - penalise that, and you can penalise every breakdown. The way it's reffed right now is just a lottery, sometimes you're going to go off your feet when there's too many players arriving at the ruck, and you might get penalised even though the opposing team didn't even try to counter ruck. And sometimes you're not penalised - for the exact same thing. It's a bit farcical

I don't think it has anything to do with counter rucking or attempting to counter ruck, god I do hate those terms. It has to do with taking away the ability of both sides to contest possession. Garratt Williamson, who I thought had a reasonable game last night was very savage on 'taking away the ability to contest'. If they get very consistent about this, and hold their nerve, they can change the way the game is played at the breakdown, particularly the methodolgy behind hands on the ball after the ruck is formed, an area of the game that refs rarely understand, and the game will move backwards, or forwards to controlling that space just beyond the ball, as has been mentioned in another thread.

It's a good rule that hasn't been enforced properly since . . . well, ever. It'll just take the teams some time to adjust, and then there will be a decent contest for possession at the tackle ball.

Off the feet was consistently pinged in Ireland v France game. This game had a NH Ref but most of the first 3 rounds of the 6Ns have had SH refs so can't judge much in terms of difference in interpretation.
