Possibly a 5th AAGPS team next year to cover the withdrawal of NSW Country (assuming AICES are a no show again), or they drop back to 3 AAGPS teams.

The AAGPS Arms Race has seen phenomenal growth occur in the game.

With Country going and ACIES being unknown, how do the country based players get a crack at schools rugby, the ARU need to step up to the plate I think. Maybe Country and ACIES should join forces, the boys in the bush also deserve a pathway through the schools system, 4 GPS team and no representation from outside of Sydney is not a good outcome for rugby in general.

5 rep teams for a 6 team comp?
How is this phenomenal growth manifested?
Last year 2 sides were a grade above the other 4 Schools.
This year, there were 3 lop sided games in the first round.

The "pathways" for the country lads for 2015 onwards will be:
CHS, about 1/2 the 2014 I's and II's squad
CCC, 15 Country players in 2014 team
ISA, Opportunities for Stannies, Kinross, Chev, Oxley and All Saints after Sydney schools take the bulk of the positions. 2014: Stannies (6) and Kinross (4) in the ISA 38 player squad.
AAGPS, TAS. (Yeah Right)
ACT JRU Reps. Long shot for lads in the South and South East.

Country boys at a non CCC, non ISA private schools in Country areas are pretty much stuffed. They will need to wait until Colts, and by then, given our current Elite Development Pathway model and focus on 14 and 15 year olds it is generally far too late for the majority of these players.

These are the boys I meant, sorry should have clarified that, more than likely their schools have a rugby program that will be lost I would imagine.

These are the areas I can think of with affected schools- non CCC, CHS or ISA, many areas would have more than one affected school - Central Coast, Newcastle, Maitland, Scone, Illawarra/ South Coast, Riverina, Armidale ( not technically anyway ) Tamworth, Central West, North Coast, Snowy Mountains, Northern Rivers and the Tweed coast.
These boys rely on Country and ACIES,it is not developing bthe game by concentrating the talent on a postage stamp.

Already lost in our part of NSW Country.

Already lost in our part of NSW Country.

Interested in your view on whether the 4 NSW Regional U17's and U15's Centres has helped with player recruitment and retention for your local competitions, and secondly, has any country boy in these centres been "tapped" on the shoulder by one of the "Clipboards", either from ARU Scouting network or one of the Brissie or Sydney Schools.

It would seem that this is the last hope for a talented lad in the bush.

Unlike you to take the bait @ILTW. :)

For the avoidance of any doubt, IMHO the AAGPS Arms Race is going to strangle grass roots rugby in the long term.
No need to waste any bait, when discussing the hubris surrounding GPS selections, with me big arse.
I'll just jump straight into the boat.

I would love to see an analysis of NSW Schoolboys, segregated by associations to understand the % of players that go on to Shute Shield level or above.
I would wager your Crown Jewels about which association is the most poorly performed.

Hugh Jarse

Rocky Elsom (76)
Working on that @ILTW.

I have all the Schoolboys (NSW I & II's, and recent Combined states) mapped against Aust Schoolboys, and Wobs selections. Starting to collect Shute Shield data, and Under 20's data (State recent incarnation and National back to when Jnr RWC started). Accurate historical Shute Shield Data is a little more difficult to obtain.

Notwithstanding the small sample size, there are some interesting numbers appearing to come up, but I need to validate the accuracy of that information before I broadcast it to the world.

It would seem that this is the last hope for a talented lad in the bush.

JGC certainly weakened our zone rep team for a few reasons that may be isolated to our centre, had there not been issues it most probably would have had a positive effect. Not sure that clubs gained any players, certainly not because of the gold program anyway.
In our area we have lost numerous players to Sydney schools and an approach from Brissie for an U16, who didn't make the cut for JGC. But the leak of players down the F3 has been going on for years so prob not the JGC. Of all Country centres we would easily the best equipped for resources, travel distance and talent pool to pick from with all boys playing club rugby each week and a fair portion also playing schools rugby,
There is a fair amount of talent outside the metro centres it just needs development and a kind of level playing field, of course country and ACIES are not going to match it with GPS and co when they are thrown together from all corners of the state with the least amount of resources at there finger tips mostly coming from no regular training or gym work of course you could say the same about CHS but they have a much, much larger talent pool.to draw from.
A well structured country schools comp run over term 2 something along the lines of the primary school 7s comp with zone, regional and state finals. This is the school comp that our club has gained quite a few players from, it has been a very successful program. This would be a way for development and proper selection for the strongest team, not just the boys who don't go to State on the long weekend turning up to Armidale, most of the talent stays within the zone rep teams playing in Sydney for no real cause at the end of the day,

Parking is going to be a real problem around there.

Get there early is the best advice.

You may be driving around for a while looking for a park and then walking for a bit once you find one.
