Hugh, George, Lee, anyone know where the NSW teams are training this week? Last year it was Sydney Uni and Rat Park is it the same this year??

Depends on the coach.Last year the II"s coach was from Trinity, hence Uni.
I's coach was from St Augustines hence Rat Park.
I hope you have jagged a coach local to you!

N1 and N2 players are to assemble at St Ignatius College Riverview at 10:00am on Sunday 23 June for team briefings and medicals. Players are to bring swimmers, towel, training gear with runners, and water bottle and lunch.

Thanks RM, I was wondering more about the weeks training other than todays get together.:)

My Mail is NSW 1s are training at Riverview until Syd. Uni dries out, which might not happen and the NSW 2s are training at Joeys. It sounds like both Teams will be both training at Uni but too wet at the moment there. Hope that helps

Yes. But.

About thirty years ago I had a conversation with an 18 year old who wanted to repeat Year 12 (no Pathways back then). He'd played Australian Schools and there was a big tour the next year, and he was young enough to be eligible. I told him he'd be crazy to do it. First, however high the standard you reach, it's still school football. If you're going to be an elite player, why linger on the springboard when you could be progressing through the club ranks, playing a higher standard? Plus, I said, what if you break your leg in the first game? That's a year of your life wasted.

I don't say that any of this applies to Williams. But it seems to me that sometimes the emphasis on representative football misses the point. It's a great credit to the boys who reach a high level of representation. But it needs to be kept in perspective. It's a shame Williams won't play rep football this year. But, longer term, he can still have a good career in the game if he keeps at it.
Is that kid from 30 years ago coaching in the NRL now?

Below are the Sydney Teams (can't find a NSW Country U16 2011 team list - Anyone?) who went to National Under 16's in 2011.
Some have left school. Those going to National Under 18 for NSW or Combined States and Shadow NSW are in red.

Just because a kid misses out in the Under 16's (or makes it) does not guarantee the same outcome for the Opens (Under 18s).

Thanks Hugh, great list .Simon Kennewell will also be back.
I was surprised at how few of the "Younsters" got through. Strong year 2013, so lets give it to those northerners.

The 2011 U16 Cohort from Queensland really belted the NSW Schools and Juniors at the 2011 U16's. They should be strong this year as U18's.

Rocky Elsom (76)
That would be good.

The inconsistent form from the Queenslanders from U16 - U18 is explained away by the fact that at U18 you have to be at School, and many of the Qld cohort often finish school up to 12 months earlier than their age cohort in NSW.

Even so our "older" boys have been touched up in recent years by QLD "babes".

David Codey (61)
It's actually more than that.
Our 16yo's have 2 age groups in front of them,so that it's not common to have many 16yo in our opens.
As Qld only has 1 age group above them, it is much more common for their U16's to play in the Opens.
We are not playing their 16B's,but neither are we playing their best 16yo's.
I think!

Like a lot of stuff from North of the Tweed, much doesn't make sense.

We also hamstring assembling our best team for U16 with the traditional gathering of Selection Masons from Country, Schools and Juniors.

IMHO I think that the little things that I have seen Craig do v the others has him as the smokey for 1's. I can't see anybody carrying on as per selection of a hooker last year in one of the teams :) Now THAT was fun to watch IIRC.

Brian, what was the stouch about, you refer to above? You now have me curious - I love a good selection stouch...!

Then look no further than the Under 17's for Sydney Juniors.

Kids who can't be bothered turning up to state championships get to trial for the Sydney team.

The undefeated State championship winning team is rewarded with 10 selections in the Train on Squad.

The underperforming Eastwood team who lost two games is rewarded with 11 Selections in the Train on Squad.

The even poorer performing West Harbour team was rewarded with about 6 or 7 kids in the Train on Squad.

A relation of a highly placed Junior administrator is parachuted into the Train On Squad.

The final "must attend" trial has been rescheduled 3 times, once on the same day that 10 or so kids were involved in Schools championships, with the rest playing club games. Reschedule to version 2.0 by moving it to a Friday night after the kids have been at School Champs at Knox all day.

Version 3.0 is an absolute belter. Send an email to the players saying that the next trial will be on a Sunday but attach a notice to that email saying that trial will be on a Saturday.

Version 3.0 gets better in that boys such as Ed Craig from Combined States Schoolboys is expected to play on Saturday (turn up or else you will not be selected) in a rather pointless trial two days before attending National Schoolboy Championships.

Craig either turns up to this trial and possibly jeopardises his chances at Nationals, or doesn't turn up and misses out on Selection for Sydney Juniors. If he doesn't turn up, (I wouldn't bother if I was him) but still gets selected for the Juniors, it just shows what a farce the whole thing really is.

If they wanted the best kids under 17 playing for Sydney then, they why would you have a special trial to select boys who can't be bothered turning up the State Championships. If they were any good or keen to represent Sydney, then they would have easily been able to work their way into the West Harbour Team or even the Eastwood or Penrith Team.

The fact that no other District wanted these two Hobbits perhaps says something. Even more telling is the facebook invitation Manly Team organised by boys themselves. Manly played with 3 or 4 only on the bench. They would rather play with 5 less on their bench than actively chase the two Hobbits for whom special trials are needed.

All I can say is this U17 nonsense is but a side show for what the various selectors will be doing over the weekend for the Under 16's. Schools, Juniors and Country Horsetrading galore.

Little wonder George Smith is out to reorganise the Juniors and Schools Administrators and "selectors" out of the pathway, and out of any real influence in footy. Go get 'en Georgie Boy.

it could have been just rivalry rather than the players not being good enough? Im pretty sure at least one of those two southern boys have previously made a Sydney team so they must have SOME form of talent, surely enough to make a state cup team.

There would have been very few players from other regions that my state cup team would've allowed into our squad just through the rivalry we had
