CHS Is 38 ISA Is 5
What a difference a year makes. In 2010 CHS got flogged 43-5, but as no9 indicated in his post: one couldn't expect the ISA players to be up to par when they played a competition game the day before. They looked weary and some lads were missing from the teams listed. Be that as it may, but CHS dominated at the breakdown and the gain line. Their scrum was on top for most of the game too.
It was hard to judge the ISA forwards individually because the CHS pack and especially the backrow didn't let them shine. Likewise the ISA backs did it tough because their ball was not great quality. They looked good enough at the start and scored the first try IIRR, but the CHS put hammer down more and more as the game when on.
It was also difficult to judge the CHS players against the ISA players because they had easier chances. The ISA defence often seemed to be outnumbered out wide and the CHS outside backs were rampant in the spaces.
Some thoughts of the players - and using the programme, plus those changes advised by the ground announcer, especially to the ISA team, that I had time to scribble down:
ISA
• Athletic and rangy 4. Teleafoa (SSC) had a go at trying to change things but needed more team help. 6. Dombkins (St. Augustines) didn't do his NSW chances a lot of good, even taking into account the disadvantage that individual ISA forwards had. I assume that ISA will play CAS on Friday as they did last year; so Dombkins will have to shine in that one and he probably will with a few days rest. Mind you: if he makes the NSW Ones, I wouldn't be surprised if he became the skipper. He has a bit of gravitas about him and talks well with the refs.
• After starting in the Twos game Menzies (St. Augustines) started at 12 in the Ones also, then moved to 13 when his schoolmate JJ Purcell came on in the 2nd half. JJ did a few of his Quade Cooper sleights of hand and things improved a bit for ISA though a couple of his passes to the right looked a bit ropey. But it was like pushing water uphill.
• Another Augies lad 9. Natoili, also started in the Twos, and came off the bench in the Ones. I thought he was the best scrummie of the day and he had a very decent stint as 10. in the Twos game also. Just as he zipped around in the hybrid game last month so did he in this one. Watch this space on young Fabian.
CHS
• The backrow of CHS was superb. Perry (Alstonville) had a terrific game, first at 7, then at 8 after the semi-injured Broome (Asquith) joined him before oranges . Broome played in his typical mad dog, skilful style and ended up with three tries. It doesn't matter if he's around the rucks or seagulling in the backline (where he can play like a back), he is good value for every minute of a match. He will press better known opensides for the NSW Is spot.
• The scrum was dominant as mentioned and the props were decent around the park also. 1. Batho (Farrar) , who was promoted to the Ones from last week as I foretold, was dangerous near the line though he needs to run at defenders in a lower position. 3. Caterson (Endeavour) had a rampant long run of about 60 metres, albeit with an embarrassing ending.
• 9. Wessells (Endeavour) wasn't as good as last week against CAS and hasn't nailed a NSW spot yet IMO. 13. Northam (Killarney), 14. Tanginoa (Prairiewood) and 15. Gutherson (Freshwater) were superb in the broken play and sometimes they broke the play up themselves to let the support score the try, though Northam sometimes took a few steps too many before the pass.
Tanginoa was outstanding and looks like NSW material, but let's see him against GPS first. He could take the outside break as well as anybody but he was good in traffic too, even close to touch. He was hard to put down when stopped and sometimes broke through instead.
Cutherson was good on defence and also ran well from the back. By example: he started one move near his own goal line and finally released the ball to Northam at the right moment at the other end of the park for his team mate to score.
If their forwards can contend against GPS next Friday as they did against ISA, the contest for the back 3 NSW positions should be keen.
