Cheers Aussie D.

Not close to the club at all anymore, but played a few years back when Coleman was coaching them. I ended up leaving when they recruited John Hopoate to play fourth grade (after he was booted from the NRL for nearly taking that Cronulla kid's head off).

Apparently I was the only one who thought it was a stupid, dangerous decision. But they did win two games as a result, so I guess there was an upside to them.

Funny that ther Emus would blue about the number of grades being reduced. They'd likely benefit from that, because they have about 20 players making up the 3rds and 4ths most weeks.

Agree, they wouldn't be arguing with that idea, most likely promoting it. Think clubs like Uni, Easts, Randwick and Eastwood - all of whom have players coming out of their proverbial who would be fighting against it. I did read it on piecarts R&M so it may just be a steaming pile of crap.

Hope the Emus get a win or two before the end of the season, as I, along with just about every other poster on here, realise the importance of the west of Sydney to the future of union, even if the NSWRU doesn't!

I agree the west of Sydney is important for rugby, but with the proliferation of NRL clubs, all with a rich history, and the AFL now launching itself into the region, the ARU/NSWRU will have to fight hard for any traction.

Having Parramatta and the Emus both struggling in club rugby doesn't achieve much. Perhaps a combined team respresenting the region would have a result in a stronger player base and then be more successful on the field, bringing more coverage (particularly in the local papers) and guys who want to play for them.

There is some good work being done up around the Hawkesbury in developing junior players and building junior numbers, so it would be a shame for those players to be without a viable senior pathway if they're good enough for higher honours.

And of course there's the issue for the Emus that whenever a strong player is developed (like David Dennis) - and I do admit this is rare - he is poached by a stronger club without any real resistance.

That would be Sekope Kepu. Talented but still playing very loose, like the #8 he used to be.

Uni demolished Gordon fairly comfortably in the ABC TV game. Best thing about it was Papworth's quip about the Uni lock who was colts player of the year 2 years ago for Parramatta - "and then the urge to study overcame him". :lmao:

Yeah it was Kepu. He had a blinder in the 2nd half and they couldn't stop him near the line a couple of times. The Wicks scrums were pretty dominant too.

Lachie Turner was like a swan amongst the ducks for Eastwood, but that is old news now.

The most interesting thing from a Tahs viewpoint was the goal kicking of Turner. He fluffed a 48 metre attempt early but got most of the others, and more importantly, they were well struck.

And the Randwick goal kicker was Big Ratu who has been signed by the Tahs. He missed his fair share but with a bit of pro goal kicking practice I reckon he'll go OK - geez he chips them from touch.

He didn't score his customary brace of tries last Saturday but he scared the Eastwood players. Unfortunately when he ran into a wall of Woodies just before the final bell their hooker, young Daniel Fizpatrick the Oz Schools captain last year, was left writhing in pain. Looks like he's broken his arm or did some serious shoulder damage.

I thought you had been unusually quiet this week Lee. How you holding up?

Nah, seriously thats a tough break for the kid. Hopefully he bounces back quickly.

Are the Tahs going on any sort of development tour this year??

In other club news:

? Southern Districts has an interesting pack for their game against Gordon. The two Brumbies props, Henderson and Shepherdson are in the front row and new Tahs THP Daniel Palmer is ... hooker !!! Where is skipper James McCormack, the ex-Brumbies hooker, playing you ask? No. 8. Odds on that Macca will throw to the lineout though.

If anybody is at Chatswood Oval to see the game give a report on how the Rebels lock Kane Douglas played. He's from the country and slipped through the Schools system. He's only 19 but he's 202cms and athletic - and was a shadow player for the Oz U/20 team this year.

Robbie Horne should be back for the Rebels soon.

? Richard Brown, the Force backrower who was picked in the 1st Wallaby squad this year, is playing 6 for the Rats against Eastwood. It's about time we got a transfer back from the Force after they pinched all our players. Thing is: I thought the Force players had to play club rugby in Perth.

Meantime the Rats 12 Clint Eadie has recovered from what he initially thought was a serious leg injury. He should find out during the week if the overseas spot he was hoping for has come through.

Good young outside centre Rowan Kellam from the Brumbies stable is moving into the Eastwood flyhalf spot and Lachie Turner takes his place at 13 allowing John Grant, who had a top game against Gordon in the TV match recently, to have another run in 1st Grade at fullback.

? In the TV match of the day Matt To'omua is playing flyhalf for the Beasts against Manly. Have a look at him. He was the Oz Schools flyhalf last year. He's already come off the bench for the Brumbies, but this will be the first senior game that most of us will have seen him start in.

? Why are Northern Suburbs playing West Harbour at 1.30pm at NSO? Answer: Because it's part of a rugby union/ rugby league double header. The second game is the North Sydney Bears v. the Wests Magpies. It gives the rugby fans time to get home to watch the test match.

Julian Salvi from the Brumbies will be playing for Norths but as most will know Kurtley Beale won't be. He's out for the season with a broken hand suffered in the gym.

? Congratulations to Randwick 3rd Grade scrummie, Phil Mack. He's Canada's Sevens captain and has just been appointed Canada's national 15s captain for their game against the USA.

? Lachlan Mitchell won't be playing for Sydney Uni against Penrith, in fact he hasn't played for them for a few weeks. He's gone to play for Wasps.

When I was watching my recording of the TV game last Saturday I believe one of the commentators said that they're going on a Pacific tour, but there's nothing on the Tahs website about it so maybe I was mistaken.

Outstanding as always Lee - better than professionals.

Beasts had a good win I hear - heard they put on 3 tries in 5 minutes to crush the Marlins. Bodes well. Scotty Bowen has the mighty Beasts peaking better than an Olympic athlete. Finals glory awaits.

Checked the Reults on the Tahs website. Randwick lost 17-10 to the Two Blues apparently. That's a fizzer.

Eastern Suburbs 43 v Manly 3
Gordon 43 v Southern Districts 7
Penrith 0 v Sydney University 76
Eastwood 21 v Warringah 53
Northern Suburbs 37 v West Harbour 24
Parramatta 17 v Randwick 10

We won't be mentioning a certain game as it never happened but other than that good win to Easts - hope your right Naza as it would be good to have A.B.U (anyone but uni) win this year. Not a good result for Souths or Penrith who we would all like to see do well to remain in the competition beyond this season. Excellent wins to Warringah over Woodies and Parramatta knocking off Randwick.

The ladder:

1 Sydney University 18 16 0 2 668 293 375 11 1 12 76
2 Gordon 18 14 0 4 585 361 224 11 1 12 68
3 Randwick 18 12 1 5 627 420 207 12 3 15 65
4 Eastern Suburbs 18 11 0 7 590 389 201 11 3 14 58
5 Warringah 18 11 0 7 562 450 112 10 4 14 58
6 West Harbour 18 10 0 8 611 670 -59 13 1 14 54
7 Eastwood 18 9 0 9 552 541 11 9 1 10 46
8 Manly 18 8 1 9 449 430 19 6 3 9 43
9 Parramatta 18 6 2 10 426 519 -93 9 4 13 41
10 Northern Suburbs 18 6 0 12 516 497 19 9 2 11 35
11 Penrith 18 2 0 16 329 881 -552 8 1 9 17
12 Southern Districts 18 1 0 17 277 741 -464 2 3 5 9

With 4 rounds to go the race is on for semi final positions with a 3-way battle for 4th between Easts, Warringah and the good guys, Wests. Also Randwick will be hoping that Gordon stumbles and they are in a position to snatch second spot. Uni, infortunately, looks assured of the minor premiership again. I am looking forward to watching next weekends ABC match of the day for the first time in 3 years!

Insult and injury as Two Blues whip Wicks

Jamie Pandaram | August 4, 2008

INJURY was added to insult as Randwick lost two key players and a match that was expected to yield maximum points against Parramatta on Saturday.

The Galloping Greens slipped from second to third place on the Shute Shield ladder after the shock 17-10 loss - the upset of the season so far.

They also face a tough run into the finals without centre Bernie Orbell and lock Steve Brennan, who injured their knees early in the contest at Two Blues Park.

Randwick coach Mark Giacheri conceded that the result was a blow but was not about to read the riot act to his players.

"It wasn't for a lack of effort," Giacheri said. "It was due to a lot of errors on our part, and credit must be given to Parramatta, their defence was able to hold us out at the end. We suffered some injuries early on and that made it difficult with combinations.

"But obviously the result was disappointing. I'm sure the problems can be fixed without too much work."

This should have been a routine victory for Randwick, who fielded Super 14 players Sekope Kepu, Adam Freier, Mark Chisholm, Ben Mowen, Pat Phibbs, Josh Valentine and Francis Fainifo against their less fancied opponents. But the Two Blues took advantage of the injuries and some turnover ball to streak to a 17-0 half-time lead, courtesy of tries to lock Steve Mafi, winger Tito Mua and centre Paula Kaveinga.

"It showed a lot of character for the boys to fight back the way they did after that," Giacheri said.

"We also had a man sent to the bin at the end of the first half, so we started the second half 17-0 down, with 14 men, running into the breeze.

"We spent the entire half camped on their goal-line but just couldn't get that third try."

Even the introduction of the tournament's leading try-scorer, Ratu Nasiganiyavi, in the second half wasn't enough to get the visitors home, although he did trouble the defenders as usual.

Nasiganiyavi had flown into Sydney from Tonga on Friday night after playing an exhibition match in Tonga to honour the inauguration of a new king.

Orbell has a corked knee, while Brennan suffered medial ligament damage. The prognosis on both will be known today following more scans but it is anticipated each will miss at least three weeks.

Halfback Phibbs is also causing concerns after complaining of back problems, and he may also miss this weekend's crucial match against Warringah - who smashed Eastwood 53-21 on Saturday and boast NSW No.9 Brett Sheehan.

Sydney University maintained first place with a 76-0 destruction of Penrith to jump to 76 competition points, with prop Jerry Yanuyanutawa bagging a hat-trick.

Gordon (68 points) replaced Randwick (65) in the top two after a solid 43-7 win over last-placed Southern Districts.

West Harbour's mid-season blues continued as they were toppled 37-24 by Norths. The Pirates were hunting University for top spot early in the season but are now clinging to sixth with Eastwood and Manly not far behind.

The world wasn't all bad on the weekend, the Mighty Two Blues got up against those dirty greens!

Huge upset. Randwick win that one and move away from the chasing pack.

One or two more homes games yet tho.

Randwick have Uni still in the last 4 rounds which probably means Gordon would have to fumble twice....

Yep, I'm now officially a Gordon fan again, after a 30 years hiatus. Just been waiting for them to get into the finals.
