Code switch has top talent primed for tour
FROM the age of four, Reece Macintosh knew he wanted to play rugby for Australia. And he had the talent.
Now 16, the 93kg outside centre is preparing to represent NSW at a combined high schools tournament in South Africa.
Showing promise in both codes, the Matraville Sports High school captain was in the South Sydney Rabbitohs under-17s high performance squad last year. He switched to union exclusively this year when he was selected as an under-18 Waratahs Generation Blue.
Reece, a Maroubra surf lifesaver, said he was “living the dream”.
“It’s exciting because we are travelling the world at the age 16,” he said. Reece developed his technique after watching rugby superstar Sonny Bill Williams.
“I look up to him because he has played league and union, and he uses the best skills from both codes to put into his game,” Reece said.
“It’s probably having the faith to go beyond the limit and just making movements happen in a game. Once you put the hard work in it all shows … it’s like a reflex.”
Vanessa Macintosh said her son trained non-stop, sacrificing weekends and time with friends to reach the next level. She is hoping to raise $1200 to cover travel and equipment costs for his trip.
Reece’s school is donating boots and the Maroubra Seals Club is also pledging support.

its not going to get easier on saturday. Klofies is strong.

To get perspective regarding the top SA mostly afrikaans rugby schools. They have 20+ rugbyteams at u14/15/16/18 levels in total. Normally u18 level have 7+ teams.

SA schoolboy rugby stronghold is in the Western Province.
