NSW CCC Rugby 2012

Given that the NSWCCC trials are scheduled for tomorrow and Tuesday (21-22 May 2012) I thought it appropriate that it's now time for "CATHOLIC BOYS TO MAKE SOME NOISE!"

At the U/16 NSW Schools Championship last year the NSWCCC team exceeded all expectations and took out 3rd place. On that journey the NSWCCC 'No Names' accounted for the traditionally strong CAS and ISA teams.

When it comes to rugby NSWCCC teams are not generally strong given that such schools maintain close links to League (in fact they took out the U/18 ASSRL title last year beating Queensland). Nevertheless my sources tell me that zone trials this year exploded with numbers, especially in the MCC (Metro Catholic Colleges) zone which struggles to get enough numbers at trials to even form a team.

So if anyone has any news on who is returning, or new players to watch out for, then post it here! Why let the snobs have all the say ... lmao!

In the U18s, the MCS team were impressive( undefeated) and so too the south sydney wollongong team. you could see from the games that most of the players actually come from a league background. Be good to see them do well though in the schools comp.

I agree with your comments. I was at the trials for last 2 days (I'm a disappointed U16 Southern Sydney/Wollongong dad, so my comments must be seen in this context).

This is how I saw it play out:

• there were 3 purely union teams at the trials SS/Woll, Broken Bay and Lismore (the others were composite union/league teams). Unfortunately in the U16 these three team were in the same pool. SS/Woll won against both BB and Lismore pushing them into the lower pool for day 2.
• this put MCC, MCS and SS/Woll in the top pool SS/woll had no trouble dispatching MCS or MCC as both played like union league composite teams (i.e SS/Woll constantly stole scrum and lineout ball and breakdown ball almost at will). The scores could have blown out, however they only played each other for 25 minutes each on day 2.
• Yet when the CCC team was announced SS/Woll only got 4 in the main and 1 shadow and BB/Lismore hardly any also.

So the U16 CCC team will be a composite league union team and I fear the other school association will have little trouble also dominating procession.

The good news is the Southern Districts rugby took a very active interest in both SSCCC teams providing good coaching. They came away very impressed with what they saw. You can see that Southern Districts now feels it has a good talent pool to feed their club teams. So stay tuned for how they go about tapping into SSCCC rugby. I feel that this is the model that is needed for NSW rugby. That is for the premiership clubs to tap into the CHS and CCC talent somehow supporting it then steering the boys into their colts programs (but how?).

It would be interesting to know how many of the boys will carry on given talk on other threads about league comp clashes. I just want to see the 'catkholic' boys give the other lot a good run for their money.
I was at a charity dinner a couple years ago where the guest speaker was the previous captain of the Aussie schools team now playing at West harbour and he told how he switched from league cos he saw the greater opportunities in union for career and travel. So never give up on these boys playing for CCC may be the beginning of the future for some of them...

Nothing has changed. In my final year my school trialed as a team for selection in the MCS squad to go to the CCC trials (in hindsight we would have been better served going to those trials ourselves), most of the guys had two years of Rugby experience and several of us had much, much more. We were at the time playing in place of Sydney Boys High in the GPS 2s competition and in the preceding two weekends we had comprehensibly dispatched our equivalents from both Cranbrook and Waverley. So needless to say we were confident of dominating those trials. And we did.

We played three composite sides (one largely made up of Eastwood Marist boys) and frankly blew them all out of the water. However, come the Monday after the trials and the MCS team list. We had 3 from the 22 we sent. All of whom were named as reserves. The largest contingent came from surprise, surprise, Eastwood Marist. The same guys we beat by 40 in the trials in a game that only lasted 50 minutes. Where did the coach of the MCS happen to teach? Eastwood Marist no less.

You could say my coach livid, the sports coordinator let a few of us listen in. Not very pleasant a phone call.

There was a good spread of the selection in the U16 team (no sign of bias) however it seemed to me that the CCC is passing up the opportunity to pick a very competitive rugby union team at the expense of developing union players out of league. There is no doubt in my mind that there was enough rugby union talent there to pick a team that could really give GPS a shake up.

Having said this however the good news is that the Southern Districts staff seem to have seen an opportunity for themselves to tap into a stream of talent in the SSCCC. It could prove to be a very good model for clubs like West Habour, Parramatta and Penrith to follow i.e. get involved in their local CCC rugby and use it to develop union players from league players then feed them into their colts programs (which are strugling). And as Kiwi points out sell the opportunities for career and travel that rugby offers.

As for U18 players to watch I know Jake Palermo he is very powerful and an outstanding scrumager, strong at the breakdown.
In the U16s Kieran Bonin is the best lineout exponent I've seen in his age group (MCS vertually won no clean ball against him, in fact the only points MCS scored against SS/Woll was when Kieran stole their lineout and they charged down the clearing kick). The other U16 to watch is Tyler Key, hooker.

What club does he play for? Any relation to Gareth Palermo from Eastwood?

Great! Even better in terms of NSWCCC being competitive! He is a tough player too, I seen him at last year's regional and though he deserved to go through to the SJRU squad!

I honestly wasnt expecting to see him at the trials given that he made the NSWCCC U/18's League team last year, and given that both the rugby and league national championships are going to clash this year you'd assume he would stay with the league as his profile is now better established in the dark code!

Needless to say he wasn't at the trials but after speaking with a NSWCCC official I was informed that he injured his ankle at his associations rugby trials (youre better informed than me MOTH). In answering your question; it would certainly appear that way!

Hey Guys,

Trials take place after the long weekend and therefore it would be great to see commentary of the games!

And remember the more posts the better. Not everyone sees the same things on the paddock!
