8 Newington boys could seem excessive but when you look at the history of these boys it is understandable why they would be considered.

  • 5 boys eligible for Pres selection disregarding current injury status have NSW experience:

- Angus Bell (U15 NSW JGC 2015, U15 NSWJRU 2015)
- Liam Janson (U15 NSWJRU 2015)
- Nathanael Endemann (U15 NSWJRU 2015)*INJURED
- Patrick McCormack (U15 NSW JGC 2015, U15 NSWJRU 2015, U17 NSW JGC 40 man 2016)
- Keith Titmuss (U15 NSWJRU 2015)

  • 3 boys playing 1st XV at Newington:
- Angus Duvall
- Chris Icanovski
- Liam Janson
  • Also a number of boys playing high level league:
- Saul Lewis (Balmain Tigers HM)
- Raine Dellow (Souths HM)
- Simi Afeaki (Manly HM)
- Keith Titmuss (Manly HM)
- Nathanael Endemann (Manly HM SQUAD)
Obviously some crazy talent here and I feel that a lot of Newington boys in the president's setup is justified. Going both off this and current form as well with Titmuss, Duvall, Janson, Icanovski, McCormack & Lewis all with a good first round of form under their belts. Special mention to the boys playing 1st XV as they are all performing well in that demanding comp, you can only imagine they will cause some destruction in an U16's comp.
If the team was selected immediately following the 2015 NSW U15s season I would agree that Titmuss and McCormack (in Daltons absence) would be selected. But on current form there are others in front of them. Re the league boys, I'm always a bit surprised by the poor cousin mentality amongst some rugby supporters which gives immediate and unquestioning kudos to boys playing five kick. For forwards in particular, an extented stint in mungo often results in declining impact in heavens game

Current form what do you mean? How can Dalton have current form over McCormack if he has barely played a GPS game this season? Who are these others you speak of? Not giving immediate kudos at all but just recognising that the HM comp is a highly competitive comp and league talent can often be translated into union talent but can see where you are coming from. Also 4 out of those 5 league boys I mentioned have played rep union previously. Nothing personal just want to clarify.

I meant that if the team had been selected in Sept last year I would have had Dalton but if injured as here, McCormack would have got the tick. Current form means this GPS season. As your post above makes clear, on paper the New 16s should be red hot. They are not and this is down to current form of a number of their players who have achieved higher honours in the past.

How are you forming your opinion on "form"? You seem to have high expectations of the New 16s team because of 6 players, how about the rest of the boys. Having watched all of their games, some are under performing and those are the ones who have not played representative rugby. You appear to make it quite obvious that you do not think much of league players in general even though they are put through higher levels of intensive training at a young age in comparison to "GPS" rugby.

The old fashioned way - having watched a number of these boys a lot in previous years and having seen how they are playing this season.

League training is great. For League. It's a much narrower set of skills. if you doubt this ask yourself how many rugby backs have made transition to league forwards compared to the reverse. Can you name one rugby league back who has become a wallaby or even soup level forward?

In terms of forwards for New, your assumed "red hot" players have done their job where needed. Bell has been unstoppable in all aspects and Titmus has scored a number of trys. You need to keep in mind that there are numerous players from 16B playing up. Janson has also been playing 1st and 2nd XV, if available for 16A, new would benefit.

That comment is quite oblivious because it is not logical for a league back to enter into a rugby forward pack. I cant name a wallaby, however if you want to compare apples to oranges, Brad Thorn, AB great, was originally a league player who specialised in the back row in rugby. Also, Maurie Fa'asavalu, English capped league player is currently do his trade as an established flanker in the top 14 rugby competition. Both codes have their own approach to training, however in your instance, positional play is of less relevance.

I hope murphy , morretti ( Waverley best forwards ) and towns (Waverley centre) extended stint playing league for the roosters doesn't impact on ur Cas u16s this year.
Somehow I don't think so ,those boys have been standouts in both codes this year.

Any extra professional coaching from either code kids get at this age is beneficial to there overall improvement not detrimental . The top school boys who play both codes know who the best players are at there age and I'm sure laugh at some of the suggested selections put forward on this forum along with selected players .

Never underestimate CAS. But surprised not to see Reimer, Tecjeck or Basheer there. Westbury is a 5/8 so selected out of position (?) Wonder what the bench looks like? Note also no Cranbrook and 1 Aloysius, 1 Barker. (That seems a bit tough)

I think you will find Cranbrook are very weak in this age. They have won very few games if any. Very suprised to not see Reimer, Tjeck, Basheer or Shariat there?

Here's my predicted squad
1. Angus bell- no questions asked, one of the most outstanding ball runners in the age group.
2. Will McLennan- great player, good throw, and put on a lot of size recently
3. Chris icanovski- great player, currently playing first XV for newington, no questions asked as he is playing a harder level.
4. Jeremy Williams- great defender, and always good for consistent metres
5. Angus Duvall- great aggressive player and punches well above his weight in the 1st XV Comp at the moment
6. Will Harris- great ball handling skills for a very big player
7. Liam scolari- aggressive player, quick feet and versatile player
8. Keith titmuss- outstanding player, great running ability and aggressive defence
9. Patrick McCormack- great pass, good boxkicks and the form halfback of the comp at the moment.
10. Saul Lewis- a very agile player, creates something from nothing, great decision making to top it off.
11. Lachlan apps- fast as a cheetah, and great finishing.
12. Dom easy- strong runner, great defence and in a great first XV at Riverview
13. Angus bell- fantastic ball skills, quick on his feet and fearless in defence.
14. Matt dutalis- extremely pacey, can read the game and has a handy boot.
15. Vinny creagh- great footwork, ability to be a playmaker and generally solid defence.

Wildcards (the possibles for the team)
16. Julian heaven
17. Nathan zylstra
18. Jordan brown
19. Joe dalton (short return since injury)
20. Matt minogue
21. Ben pepper
22. Sam locke
23. Mackinley Croft

The selectors would be silly not to have Croft (J) in the team. The form fullback since under 13s, having blistering acceleration, finding himself across the stripe plenty of times. In my opinion Creagh (J) isn't a fullback as he doesn't possess pace and his illusiveness lacks as a result of this. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Angus Bell (N) strip on a GPS jersey as he is a great ball runner and showed so in many showing's across the first half of the GPS season.

So a boy needs not only to have played league to be a top rugby player, but even to recognise one? The poor lads who just focus on rugby should probably pack it in now then and leave it to your omniscient dual coders. Wouldn't want to be laughed at after all.

Mate, all he is saying is that the boys who play both games can clearly tell a good solid player from another. At their age, there is a clear difference in player quality lol. You go watch a HM rep game and look at not only the size but quality of skill that both forwards and backs possess. Then come back and watch a 16a GPS game and you will understand why these "dual coders" are dominant. Go back a couple of years which saw current Parra Eels player, Tepai Moeroa who dominated the 1st XV competition for New.

No issue with their being some very good players in rugby who have a league background. But the mere fact of a league background doesn't = highest quality rugby player which often seems to be the default sentiment re school boy players. And they are frequently not dominant. A number of the HM boys named above were overlooked for higher level Sjru rep honours last year in favour of boys who focus solely on rugby. There is no one size fits all which is why selections should be based on current form and my original point was simply that a number of the fancied New boys are not currently in great form.

guys back to the topic of predicted squads as league and union, and just Union can both produce deadly players.

Who do you believe is out of form at Newington?

I'm interested reading these comments. I not only coach the Kings side, but have coached Leichhardt Wanderers in this age group with Steve Edmed. Among others, Saul Lewis and Lachie Ilias( CAS 10) were in the side. To be honest, I can smell a lot of vested interest in this thread. Clearly I'm not going to pick the side I would run with, but I will say this; the Joeys side and Kings side have only lost 2 games each in the past two years. They have achieved this through ability, not culture nor coaching. In short, these teams have done well because they have a number of workers who put their team before themselves. Actions win football games, not reputations.
