From my lofty perch on the Scots verandah yesterday, it was a bit of a struggle to ID any of the try scorers, apart from maybe big Tom Yassmin, who did rather "stand out" as captured so well in @Sidesteppas's HD vid.

Agreed. The verandah certainly helped a few escape the harsh conditions, including myself. We all thought the conditions could cause an upset and in turn they played a contributing factor; but in the end Scots showed up and View didn't. After a convincing win over them in the trials, View seemed quite complacent and not as pumped up and focused as they were last week against Kings.

Probably a good week for the long weekend bye for all teams as a matter of fact; regroup, and come out firing for the second half of the season which will be an astounding one.

A Shore pie watching the early matches for those who missed the boat.

Verdict: A good day for a pie.
dick smith sauce ok but no Rosella. Crust and lid top shelf but the big issue is the filling. Tasted more like a vege pie than a beef one.

Harsh I know but honesty needed regarding such an important topic.

I understand your feedback but it's still blasphemy. You are obviously a chunky beef man rather than mince. The pies are so good that I am personally going to source the same pie with chunky beef filling, so there can be 2 lines of pies in the warning oven. The Rosella sauce would also be a great addition.

I thought Shore was fortunate to be down 8 nil at halftime playing into the wind. Shore has 2 forwards of note, Edwards who went off injured after 30 min and Suttor. The rest are determined but small. Kings tight 5 led ably by Pietsch were to clinical, despite the wet. And Kyle Brown the Kings half is like an extra forward and was bigger than the Shore no8.
The difference was in the backs. Brown's distribution gave Kings 10 time & space and with Osborne chiming in at 15 Shore were always under pressure. Osborne's booming punt is also useful.
The wet track stifled the opportunities for Rixon (Shore 15). His speed is clear but today was not a day for quicks.
Let me be gracious in defeat. But I can only wear so much crap.

I will give Kings credit. They have the best scrum in GPS. Yes they did have success early and got 1 tight head. But Shore worked out a way to counter them even after Edwards went off.

3,4 and 12 all had strong games.

Peitch and Osborne both quiet games.

Rixon I thought had the better game at Fullback.

In open play Shore forwards were dominant and continually bent Kings defensive line.

It's a game Shore could have won. They had their opportunities and full credit to Kings defence.

Kings should well know they were in a tight game and they knew the momentum was with Shore in the second half. They needed the penalty goal to get clear by 8,

So kings win by 1 try and a penalty. Pretty close game.

I'm sure Kings were expecting to put a big score on and after their defeat last week.

As for the back row comment. Yes Kings were bigger. shore had 2 regular back rows out including the captain. Think these boys really stood up and pound for pound put in twice the effort of Kings.

The great thing about 2 rounds is that Shore can even the score against all sides

Looks like nearly all Round 2 games will have some sort of impact on the Season's final outcome >

@Steppa, you've outdone y'self.
You're no Mad Dog, so you must be an Englishman, because you had to be one of those to be loitering out on the Eastern side of the BH ground yesterday!
Great job!
Thanks Crackerjack, yes one of the hardest assignments, I chose the East side so that I didn't get any horizontal rain drenching the lens. Was hard to hold the cam steady in the wind and the metal scaffold stand bounced every time somebody moved. Can't imagine how hard it was to catch the ball, let alone throw a line out!

I agree with many of your observations @NIS and after watching the video of the game last night I''d add the following.

The kings scrum has finally found its lost Mojo and was the more effective of the two scrums. The weather conspired nicely to create lots of havoc and short arm penalties and as a result lots of opportunities to set scrums. While Kings had the edge in the scrums for most of the game the last four scrums of the second half in particular really saw the Kings scrum light up and dominate.

1,4,5 for Shore very solid in attack and the type of game that had to be played in those crazy conditions suited them perfectly. Rixon is a quality player and looked dangerous throughout. The Shore backs also played smart crap weather footy which limited their mistakes. It's unfortunate that Edwards went off with what appeared to be a concussion as I was really enjoying the battle up front.

Looking at the video the Shore try was unfortunately a knock on. The ref was on the other side of the ruck and all he saw was the grounding rather than the fumble and spilled carry that preceded it. But regardless the scoreline is a fair reflection of the toughness and closeness of the encounter.

Shore is a team that cannot be underestimated as they play with great physicality , intensity and passion. I'll be tipping them against the Joe Boys.

I know that no one at Kings ran onto that field expecting an easy game or cricket score and the encounter delivered exactly to script.

Looking forward to hosting the Shoremen at North Parra for the last game of season 2016 and for many their last game of Schoolboy footy.

PS: @NIS bring some of your pies for the last match and I will bring some booze to compliment them. We can celebrate the end of paying school fees!

I looked at Sidesteppa's excellent highlights of Riverview's games against Scots and Kings and what struck me is View has a weak lineout

their safest option seems to be to go to their 7

and the seldom used 5 isn't confident ... his one jump in Kings game, he lost

View seldom, if ever contest the opposition's line-out

and probably explains why at least in the Scots game the View backs were always stepping back inside and seemed reluctant to attack on the edges

so my take is View has a big pack, but their Achilles heel is their line-out

either way Round 2 is going to be very interesting

I hope shore wins some round 2 games especially against Joeys. However Kings were reasonably (not entirely) dominant yesterday. They certainly didn't have everything their own way but were deserved winners. Shore had their chances to win just like Kings last week against View,....but didn't.

Could we in next couple of weeks see a Shore Win. Two very competitive losses, against Newington (19-26 & Kings 7-16 indicate that Shore are improving by the week. Its imperative for GPS Rugby that we have 6 strong rugby schools who, on their day can beat either one of the other schools. This year we are coming closer to that reality and the long- term winner is Australian Rugby.

Re: Scots v Riverview 1st and 2nd. The matches demonstrated (both teams) a major issue for Australian rugby - the lack of experience of 8-9-10 to manage weather conditions. High winds and rain and I can't recall one box kick from 9 all day! Scots 2nd loss because of their dogmatic approach to an open game rather than play the conditions. Admirable but not clever. Coaches seem to be forgetting that rugby union is a thinking man's game - not too much 'rugby intelligence' on display yesterday.

A comment regarding Joeys v New. There was a bit more spite than a usual fixture. In the 2nds New copped a yellow in the first half for repeated cycnical play and a general observation was of general bad form during that game by New.
Worst of the day belongs to the New 1sts no 14, hurling abuse at an injured player. Ugly form to say the least.

Just a thought but if Shore were to go a second season without a win and TAS were to win the 3rd XV competition unbeaten, should they be given the opportunity to play off against Shore for a place in the higher competition next year?

A Kings 3rd XV player carding himself yesterday for lifting in the tackle made me laugh.
The refs were very strict on lifting yesterday. It wasn't allowed at all, even just slightly. 0 tolerance was probably a directive from the powers to be.

Wasn't the Kings 3rds vs High game the one cancelled?

Fair point, although remember they were 'highlights'. The line out 'steals' generally make the cut; I know I edited out at least one line out successfully secured by the no.5 v Scots yesterday. I will put up the 'near-full' footage of that game [probably upload it overnight], and later on in the month also that of the earlier games. Have been a bit too busy to do it lately.
