11 of 1sts from either Scots or Newington is probably a good reflection of GPS form with both teams having an unbeaten start to their seasons. From what I've seen in the first two rounds they are both very big and quick all around the park and very well drilled, Scots in particular. This will serve both GPS and NSW Schools very well in the upcoming rep season.
Very surprised that Rory Davis is not ranked in the top three GPS halfbacks and am very disappointed for him as he has been a shining light for Kings in their four games this year. James Kane was also perhaps worthy of a spot in at least the 3rds even if on the wing rather than fullback. Ranking Jack McCalman below Dunbar and Morris is a travesty and ill conceived. They are both fine players but are not in McCalman's class. He will be in the NSW Schools 1's.
Also surprised that Kellaway was chosen as captain when Dunbar is Scots captain. Cannell would have been my choice followed by Sandell.

Sorry SmashGH - don't know which rugby match you were watching.
One of the worst rugby matches I have seen in a while at that level - contributed to by an almost incompetent performance with the man with the pea.

Penalty count 21-6 - and his knowledge of U19scrum law almost non existent.
Shore backline spent most of the match off side trying to smother the scots backs - who were dreadful.

Scots Forwards totally dominated the smaller Shore packing winning several tight heads & taking several lineouts as well. Nearly nvery scrum an absolute shambles - and bordering on unsafe.

I trust that one of the more sensible observers will post a match report shortly.

The Hound
I was there independently today Jaghond.
I am sure that Mssrs Kelly and Blackburn will need to work on a couple of things at training for Scots.
Firstly, introduce the backline to each other.IMHO it would help if there was some cohesion and acknowledgement of each other.
Secondly, move Andrew Kellaway back to fullback. He is the best player in the school and due to lack of flyhalves as seen in the lower grades, has to play there.
Thirdly, Yes the scrum was bigger to a man, but unless someone educates the LHP for Scots, he will come up against a couple of very serious men in Newington and Joeys. The back five in the scrum more than compliment the front three. This was agreed on by more than one astute spectator. So as far as your views on this are negated by the absolute inability from your LHP to bind according to U19 scrum laws.
As far as offside goes, the penalty count was better than fair to Shore, with 13 for Scots actually backchatting the Ref from one penalty when he threw himself in from the side and then had the hide to swear at him once back in position.
The bounce of the ball straight into Kellaways arms was a gift for such a talented young man to score, but, if it had beaten him I think that the upset of the year so far could have occurred.
One last thing, and I find the language that came from some of the players was absolutely disgusting! Do they speak like that in class? No.
Well when they are playing for their School, they are actually representing their school some older women were disgusted by the language, particularly from the visiting team.
On a highlight though Kamp Crighton and Dunbar from Scots hunt like mangy dogs looking for the last chop boneand Woodhill from Shore gave as good as it gets. that was the best part of the day watching these young men go at it. Other than that, good luck to both sides for the rest of the season

Who would you put in in front of the player selected?

I'd have Hutchison at wing in front of Robinson, or even into outside centre and Taane at wing. The kid is an absolute machine, doesn't miss tackles and breaks the line at every single touch.

Scrumhalf Mike Kennedy dominated Lussick when New played View and as I've said before, Lussick couldn't even pass left to right, something that one would assume is a prerequisite for GPS 1sts, let alone halfback.

Would also have considered Nathan Kelly or Hosea Fotukava (both GPS 3rds 2012) for the front row, outplaying the chosen Newington boys, especially Serhon.

As you said, Mete was shoved off Robinson twice yesterday, but he'd arguably be the quickest person in GPS, and weighing upwards of 90kg, he has shown to be very difficult to tackle. Im not saying GPS 1's, but he has played far better than Oldham and Kennewell who were picked above him.

A few big names left out which I, and I'm sure many other people, am surprised about.
1. Sam Mete - strong runner and lightning quick, many people thought a shoe in for GPS 1st XV. To not make any side is a big disappointment for him.
2. Rory Davis - I would have said that he is the best halfback in the GPS, a great pass and very good at scooting around the ruck through lazy defence. Goes to show that to he selected into a GPS side, it's not selected on your ability but rather the ability of the side you're in.

I have only seen Mete play once this year, and IMHO whilst quick, was shown that there is more to the game than just being fast. If I were to put him into a team it would be in place of Freeman, who I think is very lucky.
As far as Rory Davis goes, it is hard to get ball on the backfoot. Put him behind the 1's pack and yes, he would shine. So would I behind these guys.
Nathan Kelly did not have a comfortable game yesterday either. If you wish to compete at high level, you must be mobile, a good or great scrummager and have at least one other string to your bow, ie lifter, carrier of at least the gain line, thrower, pilferer etc. It is not enough to just go from ruck to ruck and scrum to scrum tiring in each half.
Hutchinson in 12/13 instead of Milne? No.

The current batch of loosies not only in the AAGPS schools, but in CAS and ISA, is of superb calibre. There are some quality players wearing 6/7/8 in schools who will miss out on representative positions by sheer weight of numbers. In any other year they would be lay dawn mezzaires to start for NSW Schools.

Most of the AAGPS games will see scavenging packs mangy dogs taking on wolf packs and thieving jackels in the loose forward battles, with neither grouping prepared to allow the other mob any advantage as they scrap over Gilbert.

Think About Rugby

Allen Oxlade (6)
What to report?
2 schools I love for different reasons: the SJC 3rds proved my faith in the SJC system of producing competent rugby players for and over the ages; SGS proved my faith in people who set their noses to the grindstone.
This game i love, played in the spirit intended.
The game the thing; the rest, a circumstance.

That's excellent.
Sounds like the game left you with a warm inner glow. Just like it should.

They say that forwards win games, and that the backs determine by how much. The winning of the game by the piggies is shaped by the seagulls fighting over the last chip.

A pack of loosies acting in unison, the 6 looking for the chip, the 7 stealing the chip, and the 8 bringing the tomato sauce with the cheating runt halfback carrying their cloaks of invisibility so they can enjoy the chip at their leisure is one of the pleasures of modern footy.

As the self appointed Undersecretary of Twee for Gaggerland, there are some who rather unfairly claim that I am the Honey Badgers unpaid speech writing intern.

My comment is this.the exclusion of Sam Mete ( view) from all of the GPS sides says a lot about the process.. The kid has been outstanding all year.although I will say great call on Clancy in 1's.. He has shown great class all year.
I agree with Brian Westlake. Yesterday showed up a lot of shortcomings in the Iggys back 3 even with the win

Great insight GS. Can't remember the last time a GPS side boasted 3 current AUS schoolboys, and an AUS A player as well, is going to be a cracker watching Clancy unleash the big boys outside him.

In answer to your question footy king, there was a year in the mid 2000's IIRC where joeys had 16 selected into GPS teams, with the seconds halfback being picked up in the GPS 2nds. Around the kurtley Beale era.

Am out for the Agternoon, will post some notes from the shore v scots clash yesterday at some stage tomorrow.

Congratulations to all of the boys selected int the GPS teams this weekend, a huge honour and you will no doubt do yourselves proud! Also a congratulations to Andrew kellaway and Andrew Deegan on their third year of GPS selection. I can't recall this ever happening before without the use of pathways! A phenomenal achievement from both boys. Best of luck in their games this week!

Scots 24 - 22 Shore

I wasn't there but heard it was a terrific comeback by Scots in the second half.
Do Scots still lose half of their 15s age group to Glengarry? If so, was Scots v Shore As against As? If the answer to both questions is 'yes', then a mighty effort from Scots and would indicate a weak age group at Shore.
