"As news of Osama Bin Laden’s death swept the upper north shore like a panicky brokers “Sell” cry, a svelte looking Cerise and Blue 1stXV triumphed 26-17 over Knox Grammar at a chilly Warrawee under dullish lights and no illusion." - 3:15 GPS rugby blog

any clue who is in the joey's or new teams?

Newington have 10 of last years team back - so omit Roach, Apo, Luani, Bannon and one other ...
Joey's have only two of last seasons 1stXV returning - LeLievre is the captain.

... And cheers Sarge.

thanks finland fella.

according to a match program from last year that i still happen to have, that means New's team consists of:

1. Ezra A
2. ?
3. Alan A
4. McKenzie *
5. Vlahos
6. Pryor Lees
7. Baldwin
8. ?
9. ?
10. McDonald
11. Roye
12. ?
13. Roods
14. Vlahos
15. Gibson *

*I'm assuming that 'one other' that i must omit is either Gibson or McKenzie as i'm certain the rest listed are returning.

Both Gibson and McKenzie were in year 12 last year. So yes, only 9 are returning (from that team list), might've been confused with 10 as there were a few changes throughout the year.

Both Gibson and McKenzie are gone

There is a good crop of youngsters coming though as well as a number of guys from last years 2s competing for spots. Big test this weekend against Kings.

Finland fella posted these games from last weekend.

OK, I've found ... Cranbrook v Grammar,
Kinross v Newington
Newington 2ndXV v High 1stXV,
Riverview v Waverley,
Shore - internal trials
Scots - internal trials
Kings - internal trials
Knox v Joey's (Monday night)

Anyone know the result from the View v Waverley game?

Riverview beat Waverly 26-14.

Waverly went into half time leading 7-0 then quickly in the second half scored another try to extend it to 14-0. Then Riverview belted out 26 unanswered points to finish victors. No idea who the point scorers were.

Looks like New may not be favorites this year. View are looking strong and Scotts are as well. Wonder how Kings will shape up this year. My pick for match of the year would certantly be View and Scotts.

It certainly seems an impressive start from View if you include that 7's result however, I doubt you could consider them Fav's with New retaining so much talent from last year. Either way, Looking forward to some good footy this season!

Anyone know more about the composition of this View team?

Nah, Newington are the favourites. Whilst they won't find players of the quality of Apo, Roach and Luani too easily, to fill these positions - I expect the props and Roods and Roye to have big seasons and McDonald is a very clever flyhalf... mind you it only takes one slip in this comp and Riverview, Scots and Kings are lurking.
Also remember New' have to travel to Hunters Hill this season following on from their thumping of Joey's at home to win the comp last year. The home crowd on SJC1 will be baying for Wyvern chested blood. Sports psychologists booked for training at Stanmore before that one I think (or if it goes pear shaped - after that one).

Great season coming up...

Does anyone know what happened between Newington and Kinross last weekend? Some confusion as to whether they played them at 1st or 2nd XV level? Surely New 1st XV would have played Kinross 1st XV and as it would have been a total mismatch if they played Sydney High. (who i believe their 2nds played)

I have heard a couple of unconfirmed reports that Newington lost. Can anyone confirm the scoreline?

Newington did indeed lose, by 3 points I believe, however they never took any Year 12s to Orange

Thanks Malcsy. Do you know why they didn't take any Yr 12s? Something to do with exams maybe?

So Newington are yet to win a game this season - losses to Southport, Knox and now Kinross.

Others may disagree but it is sometimes hard to reverse a run of losses. With the first round of the GPS comp only 4 trial matches away will that be long enough for Newington to find their form and get their combinations going? I guess this weekends match against Kings will give us a better idea although Kings have played little to no rugby so it will be a tough game for them as well.

The GPS first round against View is shaping as a cracker...

Yes, something to do with study/exams. I'm told that the 1sts team vs Kings will be completely different (bar one, new openside Morris) from the team that played Kinross.
