I loosely followed the results of the 2009 Australian Schools touring side in Great Britain last year and suspect that it might be fairly be rated as a disappointing tour, compared with historical results.

Of the returning players from that Tour that remain elligible for GPS, NSW or Australian Schools in 2010 have any players damaged their chances of re-selection in 2010 or will those guys be automatic/immediate selections this year?

On the Oz Schools EOYT they played mainly U18 teams. Some of the boys had been with their regional academies for several months. It was the same 4 years ago - it's not a level playing field.

When the Ireland and England Schools teams come here they play against boys who are at school, only.

Joeys 5 Kings 42 (as somebody else reported, I forget the score)

Ouch. Kings were too big and too dominant in the scrums and pyhsical contests and it was like men against boys. If you're thinking they had a lot of ethnic Islander lads in the pack, physically mature before their contemporaries, as Auguies had dominanting Joeys a month ago, it was not the case.

The Joeys backs were forced to deal with inferior ball but they didn't help themselves with some poor passing and ordinary decisions when they got it. The Kings handling wasn't that flash in the 1st quarter of the game either; their backs kept Joeys in the match by not timing their runs properly and some poor passing.

I thought that Joeys would make a comeback in the 4th Quarter, at least, with the wind behind them, as they are known for running bigger opponents off their feet later in a game. However Kings finished the game looking for more.

It's hard to say who were the standouts for Kings as is was tough to stand out in a top team, especially in the pack. The props 1. Gillespie and 3. Reid not only scrummed well but were handy taking the ball up and stopping Joeys doing the same. Backrowers - 6. Killingworth was a pig-dog all round backower (and that's meant as a compliment), 7. Connor was always on the ball whichever team had it and 8. Kent was always hard to stop.

10. Wylie is an excellent all-round flyhalf and 12. Ingate looks like NSW Schools material with ball in hand. Ingate missed a couple of easy goals but they were an aberration as he usually struck the ball sweetly and damn long.

The Joeys guys had to battle against the tide for the whole game but 2. Dicembre came to his own at the end and 5. Deans and 8. Williams never gave up. In the backs 15. Tegart took advantage of the few chances he had.

It was only a trial and Joeys are still trying different players, but it was no excuse today. I haven't seen Riverview this year yet but Kings are going to be hard to beat in the 2010 GPS. I don't think that they are as good as the St.Augustine's team in the ISA but they'd run them close.

[It was better news in the Twos for the home team: Joeys 41 Kings 22. Threes: Joeys 5 Kings 14. Joeys had an easy win in the 16As but I forget the score.]

Reid is the hooker. #3 would be Guy Millar I am pretty sure.

As you said backrow is pretty classy for a schoolboy backrow.

Wylie is a good kicker and is quite skilful as you said Ingate is quite skilful as well.

Do you mind posting the Kings and Joeys teams here Lee?

You're right AD - my eyes lined up the name and the number wrongly.

The Joeys team is very much a work in progress with a few changes from last week. Walford played Twos today as part of his continued penance but will probably be in the Ones when the competition starts.

JOEYS KINGS
James McLean 1 Jed Gillespie
Ryan Dicembre 2 Tim Reid
Douglas Kim 3 Guy Millar
Michael Kovacic 4 Jack Leslie
Nathaniel Deans 5 Benn Melrose
Bradley Casaceli 6 Boyd Killingworth
Cameron Bond 7 Tom Connor
James Williams 8 George Kent
Max Beer 9 Jared Lewthwaite
Mitchell Kay 10 Edward Wylie
Josh Carolan 11 Josh McCormack
Rob Bartlett 12 Chris Ingate
Corey Ashby 13 Tom Horne
Leroy Buchanan 14 Michael Freeman
Hayden Tegart 15 Brad Curtis

I was just going by the programme because I don't know the Kings boys by sight.

So McCormack was the goal kicker??

Yeah - that's Dillon Walford (nephew of Ricky of league fame). He's doing penance in the lower teams because he didn't show up to the Joeys camp in the last holidays. He had a brilliant game in the Twos didn't he???

Lee.

Predictably another accurate and impartial report, save for a few program errors that caused some name issues in the TKS Squad.

Your opening comments about the origins of the TKS players were not only accurate but refreshingly honest.

I arrived at HH just after half-time in the 16A's. I believe the final score was Joeys 28 def. Kings 5. Apparantly TKS commenced well but after Joeys initial two tries TKS lost heart and struggled for the balance of the game.

4th XV- TKS 36 def. Joeys 5 (?)
3rd XV - TKS 14 def. Joeys 5
2nd XV - Joeys 42 def. TKS 20 (?)
1st XV TKS 35 def. Joeys 5

Walford definitely had a dominant game in the 2nd XV against a disheartened TKS team. I accept his general ability but question his performance behind a losing pack and being hounded by Connor, Killingworth and Kent all day long.

I went to the Joeys- Kings clash eager to see the match-ups predicted by G&G Rugby ie. (2) Dicembre v Reid. (7) Connor v. Bond, (13) Ashby v Ingate and (15) Tegart v. Curtis.

Dicembre slaved tirelessly in a comprehensively beaten pack. The Joeys front row spent a considerable amount of time in the air. In the final stages of the game when Kings had excellent field position in the Joeys 22, TKS produced a monster effort to take their 5th tight head. That, for me pretty well summed up the afternoon.

Joeys lost Bond to a shoulder/arm injury. I hope that it's not serious and he' fit for the GPS competition ahead.

Besides the front row dominance. the TKS back row were extremely effective and provided continuity to the King's attack throughout the afternoon.

For the Joeys pack I thought that James Williams was the standout in a thoroughly beaten outfit.

In the Joeys back-line Bartlett had an unfortunate day at the office. As testimony to that statement Ashby and Bartlett swapped positions later in the game. Does Bartlett come from Canberra and has he represented ACT Schools previously?

Cornered between and agressive back row and a smothering midfield defence by Josh McCormack and Chris Ingate Joeys 10, 12 and 13 became increasingly indecisive and ineffectual.

Ashby appeared like a player usually accustomed to running at will against inferior opposition. His encounter with Chris Ingate proved extremely frustrating. The physical dominance of the Joeys midfield by McCormack (12) and Ingate (13) was a major component of the game.

From my point of view the Joeys back three of Tegart, Buchanan and Carolan were unsighted for most of the afternoon. Ashby had one spectacular broken field carry where he demonstrated his brilliance with the ball in hand. However without the continuity provided by an competitive back row or supportinmg backs that could stay with him, that attack faltered.

In the dying minutes of the game Tom Horne TKS left wing popped up on the right wing to deliver the last pass for the final try. Until that time he had enjoyed a quiet game.

Prior to Bond's injury and subsequent departure Tom Connor was easily outplaying him, in my opinion.

The standout performances in the TKS team were as follows;

1 - Jed Gillespie
2 - Tim Reid
3 - Guy Millar
5 - Benn Melrose
6 - Boyd Killingworth
7 - Tom Connor
8 - George Kent
10 - Ed Wylie
12 - Josh McCormack
13 - Chris Ingate

I know that doesn't leave out many of the TKS players who also had solid games, but is a reflection of the absolute dominance by the players listed above.

If Josh McCormack had enjoyed a better day with the boot TKS may have posted a far greater score.

With only 3 more games for the selectors to announce the initial GPS sides I would appreciate your thoughts so far.

Regulars of G&G Rugby have talked previoulsy about credentials of Hugh Roach, Hooker from Newington. On 2010 season form and results I can't seeny logic in avoiding selection of the TKS front row as a unit in the GPS 1st XV. Their emphatic performance yesterday must be hard to ignore.

The same comments apply to many other players in this team that reflects the benefit of many of the squad returing for their 2nd year in the team. This situation is similar to many Joeys chmpionship teams of the past. Natural talent + maturity + confidence + good coaching = winning performance.

However, I've now seen enough GPS Rugby to know that the above is not always enough!

He was pretty good, and aside from Bond probably the only player i could realistically imagine in a gps 1's or 2's jersey
I'd say the GPS selectors will pick him in 1sts in the 2nd row, À la Greg Peterson last year. If not that then a starting Jersey at 8 for 2s for sure. Every team needs a tough red head

Wow. Kings comprehensive winners. Even winning a few lower grade games....Topo mentioned the 'period of transition' at Joeys but I had no idea it was this bad.

Do they still have compulsory colour comp? How many open age teams are there?

Maybe things will improve once the transition is complete, but it doesn't look like we'll be returning to the days when a loss, by any of the Joeys teams (from u12s to opens), is remarkable.

Langthorne,

I know nothing about Topo's view on transition at Joeys but many of the GPS and CAS schools must be competing with specialist Sports High Schools and other emerging Rugby schools such as St. Augustines for talent.

I have even heard that St. Andrews is in the market attempting to attract Rugby talent to their academic program.

Previously Joeys must have ranked as the top Rugby nursery, at least in NSW.

Maybe they will never attain that status again but simply be a strong rugby shool with a rich tradition that wins the GPS Rugby Competition only when the stars align, not very other year.

I think he is referring to the change at Joeys from a previous situation where everyone at Joeys was a boarder to a 50/50 split of boarder/day boy.

Being a boarder honestly has a big difference in how you can contribute to school life and especially improving your rugby.

Yep that's exactly what I was referring to. Having all boarders made a big difference to culture as well as ability to train together more often. It's easier to enforce a no dickheads policy in an all boarder environment.
