We might just be back.
The Chairman's Match Preview: Shore School vs The Scots College
"The wait is finally over. The world's most captivating game returns for another half of drama, intrigue, beauty and suspense. The Rugby is back." - A wise man.
At long last, we are back. It has been good to see some grass in amongst this whole rugby shtick, but now it is time to close it out for the rest of the season, and crown a champion in season 2025.
As I sit here on my chair at my desk writing this up, I cannot help but think. Surely we have to get over the line this time.
Introducing the two sides of the teams. Team Scots vs Team Shore. The Ryder (Shore vs Scots) cup is about to commence.
"Live to you from Northbridge Country Club, the Ryder Cup of 2025 is about to commence."
There is always an enemy.
Introducing, Team Scots (Of course, the USA).
- Randall
- Sides
- McKenzie
- Bull
- Alker
- Rodwell
- Rudd
- Lemoto
- Kater
- Sinclair
- Blackwell-Smith
- Tremlett
- A.Large
- Wright
- O.Large
Last time, at the Bellevue Hill Black Course, Team Scots controversially came away with a victory. Team Shore felt robbed. Many stroke penalties that were probably over-done.
It allowed for O.Tremlett to seal the win with a beautiful birdie putt on 18th, a 44 footer, to finish the tie 31-28, in favour of Team Scots.
No doubt this image will be plastered throughout Team Shore's locker room.
Now, with players out of form, and practice matches against teams like St. Joseph's and Kings resulting in wild scores upwards of +15. A tight round of 9 against Team Newington resulted in a Halftime E score, but then an excrutiating birdie for Newington pulled them to E as Scots faltered to +1, Newington walking away winners.
There is a point to prove. Selectors need impressing. Team Scots will be shooting long and sharp in the fourballs.
They won't shy away.
Now for the fan favourite Blue Team
Introducing Team Shore (The European Heroes)
1. Jarrett
2. Baxter
3. Green
4. Sidwell
5. Frape
6. Stock
7. Leahy
8. Clout
9. Greig
10. Bassingthwaighte
11. Hockey
12. Francis (c)
13. Wendt
14. d'Almeida
15. Callaghan
No doubt a tough season, but imagine Team Europe trying to compete without McIlroy, Rahm and Rose all at the same time. They have been most certainly at the short end of the stick of the injury lines.
This lack of long driving left them hopeless against the big guns of Kings and Newington, shooting +52 and +42 in terrorising displays.
But now, the big guns are back, and the expectations are reset. There may not have been something like the Miracle at Medinah (Damon Pin's drop goal) at Bellevue Hill this year, but these lads will be hungry to give the blue team another trophy. They should score close to even par.
The multi-national combination of regional New South Wales and regions throughout Sydney should hope to make something happen. They need it now.
The Morning Fourballs
Bull/Alker (TSC) vs Sidwell/Frape (SHORE)
A huge match beckons for these partnerships. Shore have been lacking physicality and got destroyed at lineout time against Riverview, effectively killing any chance of front-foot ball for the backline. Both sides will be looking to get up in eachothers faces and earn some gain line yardage. Maybe a bit of a niggle here and there as well given the red-card history that exists within these two squads.
Chairman's Prediction: This tie is won by Shore, 1 up after 18.
Kater/Sinclair (TSC) vs Greig/Bassingthwaighte (SHORE)
There is no return bigger than this. Shore's McIlroy returns to the course to bring back the glory that they so lavished in last year. The halves partners are crucial to both sides. Shore, playing dynamically of 9 with lots of movement need to be organised, or the Scots backrow will eat them alive. Scots, a more structurally sound game off 10, require yardage and territory. Kicking is critical. Can Bassingthwaighte get Shore back into the fold early?
Chairman's Prediction: This tie is won by Shore, 4 and 2.
Randall/McKenzie (TSC) vs Jarrett/Green (SHORE)
There is no doubt that Shore do not have the size of other forward packs. King's overwhelmed them in that regard. But Jarrett and Green have been essentially the sole survivors of the whole year injury-wise, and now they must make an impact felt against the impressive Randall and McKenzie, the latter who showed impressive form towards the end of the last school term. If Shore's scrum goes backwards like it did against Kings and Riverview, I cannot see a way for any front foot ball or territory.
Chairman's Prediction: This tie is won by Scots, 2 and 1.
Tremlett/Large (TSC) vs Francis/Wendt (SHORE)
The centres. A large shift in Shore's strategy has led to a new-look faced Francis and Wendt combination rolling out in midfield. Shore's defensive game has been sound midfield, but they have lacked the flair. There will be no shortage of flair from the young and impressive hotshot Large, who's impressed at the top level despite being a relatively young fella. Can the Shore midfielders gel? Tremlett has also been impressive, coming off a fantastic weekend up at the sunshine coast. Both sides need domination through the centre. I say,
Chairman's Prediction: This tie is won by Scots, 3 and 2.
SCOREBOARD:
SHORE: 2
SCOTS: 2
HALF-TIME PREDICTION: SHORE 12-12 SCOTS
The Closing Day Singles Matches.
It is crunch time. Who is the Ian Poulter. Level after day 1. Who can bring it home?
Lemoto (TSC) vs Clout (SHORE)
Well well well. Doesn't the lad from Wellington have a job on his hands here. Forced up against the goliath Lemoto, he will need to bring an extra level of intensity and physicality to compete. But if anyone can do it, its him. Lemoto was dynamic and brilliant in the representative matches, and Clout is the backbone of Shore's gainline carries. Both critical to their squads, will the lights be too bright?
Chairman's Prediction: This tie is won by Scots, 5 and 3.
Sides (TSC) vs Baxter (SHORE)
The young Baxter has been pulled out of his normal year group, and has performed spectacularly over the last few weeks. An impressive feat being the only Shoreman to make the Presidents XV, he most certainly has earned his spot atop the table. However, Sides has been a force of his own. He has a fantastic knack for smelling a pie, and dotting that ball over the line at just the right time. Both sides will need a huge shift from their central big agile lads.
Chairman's Prediction: This tie is won by Shore, 2 and 1.
It seems to have all come down to this then. A mouthwatering prospect.
O.Large (TSC) vs Callaghan (SHORE)
The two big names take to the 18th tee with a tied Ryder Cup. A par four, a tricky one. Who rises to the occasion, and hits it straight down the middle and makes the semi-decent putt? Well, Callaghan has proven himself invaluable to this Shore team over the last few weeks. He does not like hitting the floor, and can quite frankly make defenders look a bit silly at times. Usually, this would be a walk in the park. But enter, O.Large, the prodigy. His speed and athleticism is unquestioned, and caused all kinds of headaches for the Shoremen last time. Both sides desperately need them to step up from the back. The starpower behind the frontline may just be enough to get one side over the line at the last possible second.
Chairman's Prediction: This tie is won by Shore, 1 up after 18.
They might just be able to do it. My scorecard reads:
SHORE: 4
SCOTS: 3
PREDICTION: SHORE 24-22 SCOTS
So fight well. Drive long, be smart and play with pride. Stay loud, and bring home the win for the blue heroes.
Don out.
