I think the challenge to the format will be if a team goes 0-0-5, the second half of the season is going to be very long.

I'm sure over in the CAS comp, SAC is glad there wasn't a 2nd round, particularly with the -250 points difference.

How can you compare teams who play a 10 round competition and a 5 round competition?

it’s just not possible, the next years will show this. Teams will struggle especially in rugby to go 10-0

tbf in sports like basketball newo we’re able to go undefeated so it shows it is possible.

A lot of the teams thrown up there for best in last 40 years were predominantly from the era when High and Grammar were still competitive and playing in the 1's comp. I think most mentioned went 7-0.

In fairness I think SAC maybe should go down the path of High or Grammar play other schools B/C and make it competitive it will be better for all round. SAC have been weak even way wat back in the early 1990's nothing has changed.

You have to feel for SAC and its players who don't get the same monetary support as other schoolboy rugby programs, instead focusing on trying to rise in HSC ranks.

A question for the historians. With 1 round to go, there have been 3 draws this season. Joeys V Scots, Joeys V Shore and Kings V Scots. 2 teams had 2 draws each (20% of their matches, crazy right). Has there ever been so many draws in the 1st XV comp? Kings have been dominant, View excelled, Shore beat View. Probably only New fell short of potential but even then they played some great football. The best thing about the GPS '23 comp is that it has been very close, the comp is healthy and clearly the most competitive schoolboy sporting comp of any kind or code in the country. The season should run longer!

Home and away works, in CAS Knox averaged over 40 points per game, won everything but one game, and lost the whole season. How good would a second round decider be! I know Cranbrook would sell the house to play Barker again.
H&A only promotes better programs and depth, add a school champs point system to it for all A and B teams, and GPS rugby will go from strength to strength.

It’s the best method moving forward. I wasn’t a fan when it was initially done years ago but probably just man yelling at clouds.

I hated it when View played Joeys in a trial. Just felt like it diminished it to a degree. The loss didn’t matter…

2 rounds is here to stay as I hope as much as the CAS might hate it. They should adopt it and look at their team structures.

The boys are playing more meaningful games which is key for them. Say what you want but the trials are trials and no body talks about them now or cares. The team View was v Barker in their first game is completely different to that I watched through the season.

IF, and it's a big IF, you could get a GPS/CAS play off at the end of season. Reduce the trial games,have a GPS/CAS home and away comp and at the end have a semi final week and grand final week ie GPS 1 play CAS 2, CAS 1 V GPS 2, winners play GF, loses play for 3/4. Rest play for plate. GPS3 v CAS 4, GPS 4 v CAS 3 etc 2 more weeks of schooboy rugby and if you condensed the "meaningless" trial games at the beginning then you could fit this in and not take anything away from the athletics season. This would be exclusive to 1sts and 2nd Only therefore ensuring hopefully big crowds.Thoughts.
I know Water Polo do it. They have a GPS/CAS combined comp and then each school plays for their own premiership either GPS or CAS.
How good would it be to finally have a solution to the age old question : Which school is the best ?
This year it would be :
Kings v Trinity semi, View v Waverley semi in the 1sts

I think the number of meaningful games for the top boys pretty good right now. If you make a Gen Blue team you should get to 15-16 by the end of the year and Aus U18s 18-19.

If a combined concept was done you would have to consider Augustines and Oakhill on current program.

Correct, but we’re coming from a point that was barely double digits a year ago so it’s good progress.

Just saying, other sports seem to do it ok so why not Rugby. Bet if you asked the boys whether they wanted to be crowned GPS/CAS champions, they would say yes. How to included Auggies and Oakhill etc in ? Tough one.

I’d also say the Europeans nail the gap 18-20yrs in development because of the abundance of Professional programs.

Many of the Schools comps are over hyped through the UK IMO. They may have more schools at an OK level but not the talent density of Aussie ones.

Agreed… people who take trials as serious as comp games are just weird.

to put into perspective, at the end of 2019 kings sent over a group of 26 lads to Europe and went from my understanding 7 from 7 against uk/Europe teams.
