Watching Kings vs New on Cluch, at the end of the first half it looked as though Kings would go on to score 50 points. But either they took their foot off the gas or New lifted significantly as it looked like New might run them down. Fatigue seemed to be an issue for Kings, which could prove important against Riverview next week.
When they are ‘on’ I feel Kings are able to put points on against any GPS opponent, but they also let points be scored against them.

I hope the New player who was injured in the contact with Hadley Tonga is okay.
There was not even a hint of a shoulder charge. Two players moving at full speed in a contest for the ball. Tonga reached the ball a fraction of a second earlier and the contact, unfortunately, ended poorly for the New player.

My thoughts on the Joeys / Shore 1st XV - there is clearly a lot of fight in the Shore team. Every time Joeys looked to have a roll on shore counter punched and levelled things up. You would have to assume their performance against Kings was an aberration. No doubt Joeys are missing game breakers like Jorgensen and Doyle but players like Fowler are growing in confidence each week. Both Joeys and Shore will be disappointed with the result yesterday, the win was there for the taking. They will also both to be cranky to be winless after 2 rounds, it would be unwise for any school to take either team lightly over coming weeks, consider yourselves warned.

Kings most effective when playing direct, rumbling up the middle through forwards and centres. With a lead established they went wide early but ran sideways and gave their excellent wingers no room. Has happened in a few games. I will watch their fitness too.
Two rounds in and injuries are mounting across the schools. Battle of attrition and depth will be key. Curious to see what will happen in term 3 last couple of games and premierships on the line. Will some lower grade teams get “padded” and some kids thrown to the wolves in firsts? Hope not.

Comp has thrown up a lot of surprises to date. View were quite poor in Kings trial and are a different team now, perhaps had a lot out. Ditto Shore last week but turned it around big time. Scots great individual talent and size but lack cohesion, think list starting front row as well. I’d never write Joeys off and expect them to come good but also have some key injuries. New have a flamboyance to rattle anyone, though reliant on backs.

3rd XV Trial 4 Report

This was the final trial week for the 3rd XV competition.
The first of seven competition rounds starts next week.

TAS 1st XV 19 d High 1st XV 5 (Competition Round 7 played early)
TAS are the first team to score competition points with this competition round win over High. A great result for TAS after a slow start in the trials, but also a solid performance from High to score a try and keep the match competitive. TAS host defending co-premiers Riverview next week in Armidale while High travel to Shore for the first official comp round.

Riverview 3rd XV 17 d Scots 3rd XV 15
What a close match at Lane Cove with Riverview sneaking home by a conversion. It just goes to show how close this competition will be with just a few points separating View, Kings, Scots and Joeys in their trial matches. Riverview will need to be at their best travelling to Armidale next week while Scots face a rematch with Kings who they lost to narrowly in the trials.

Joeys 3rd XV 27 d Shore 3rd XV 10
I watched this match at Shore and it was very close for most of the time with the score 10-10 into the second half and literally anyone's game. Joeys ran in three good tries in the second half for a confident victory but Shore looked good for much of the contest. Joeys can definitely improve their discipline and structure, but a win is a win and I am sure they will be well prepared for Grammar in the first round next week. Shore host High at Northbridge and that should be a good contest as well.

Kings 3rd XV 7 d St Patricks 1st XV 5
This is a great result for Kings against the St Pats 1st XV. I said it would be a tough assignment and once again only a conversion between the two teams. Still, Kings will lift from this victory and will be confident travelling to Bellevue Hill for the first round match against Scots as they commence their shield defence.

Grammar 1st XV 45 v St Patricks 2nd XV 0
It's certainly good for Grammar 1sts to get a win on the board before the competition starts but very hard to tell their form as they have not played any other GPS teams in the trials. We only have to wait a week to find out though, because they host Joeys at Rushcutters Bay in the first 3rd XV comp round next week. Should be a cracker.

Kings 4ths d Newington 3rds
RugbynBeers reported that Newington 3rds were just beaten by Kings 4ths on the bell. I don't have the score but well done to Kings claiming a 3rd XV victory.

So now the trials are done and the 3rd XV competition begins. Four round 1 matches next week:

Shore v High
Grammar v Joeys
TAS v Riverview
Scots v Kings

Any idea what it will look like for schools like kings who play Scot’s away when they have a offical home game ? Will 4ths push into the 1pm time slot at kings or maybe the 16As?

and at beluvue hill will the Scot’s vs kings game be pushed earlier to allow kings boys to go and sub for the 2nds ? Or will Scot’s look to play at the 1pm time slot of this game giving their team the home crowd advantage which they rightfully deserve?

Extremely physical game at Stanmore. Hope Toby Rodwell (n.15) is alright. After being down 21-nil Newington come back to make the scores 24-26. Kings winger and New 15 chase for the ball and Kings winger shoulder charges the Newington full-back and closed the game.

Watching the clutch footage and ‘house of kings’ you can clearly see it is not a shoulder charge what so ever.

hadely tonga in his first game back scored a hatrick, looks like rugby AU have kept a good one.

Each school seems to approach differently. I’d expect Kings home program to stay as normal with 4ths moving into 3rds timeslot. Similarly Kings 3rds to play away against Scot’s in normal slot as part of hosting Shore. NFI how they’ll cater for injuries. Bit of a weakness in the programming.

Sorry to hear Charlie is out for the season. He is a talented rugby player, as are his brothers. Charlie's Dad was also a really handy back and ended up on the wing in the 'View 1st XV in the late 80s.

When 3rd XV comp games are at a different venue to the 1st and 2nd games, they are typically played earlier to allow the 3rd XV players to get to the main venue for the 2nd XV. Exception of course are the games in Armidale where 3rds travel to play TAS. Otherwise I have seen many cases of earlier 3rd XV comp games. Often these have much smaller crowds but that the nature of a competition.

On Cluch it looked a fair competition for the ball. Hope Toby is ok. The turnover that led to the try though showed Kings strip the ball and send it forwards. Should have been knock on and New feed. Thems the breaks I guess, according to most judges on here the best team won on the day.

Yesterdays game at view we saw the 2nd XV take a big blow early on with an injury that took out one of there key players leaving the boys rattled. Two over boys in the side had to leave the field with concussions. They unfortunately ended up losing the game to a much bigger Scot’s side.

I agree with that. Scots we’re the only team to play footy in the 2nds and deserved the win. View loosing 2 forwards early and the injury could have deflated them quite a bit and they looked to wake up in the 2nd half for a bit but Scots too good. 10 was very impressive for Scots 2nds.
