With the 2023 comp getting underway next weekend my predicted table is:

1. TKS
2. TSC
3. NC
4. SJC
5. SIC
6. Shore
I'd swap Joeys and Scots. 10 games will test depth and Joeys has that in spades, as does this years Kings year 12. Newington strong but limited depth. Next year for Scots, tremendous year 11s. Riverview have the cattle but not seeing it coming together.

With Round 1 beginning for 1st and 2nd’s teams next Saturday I thought this was worth mentioning….

Once competitions start, there is to be NO fresh substitutions, meaning there will only be 15 players in 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV’s each week.

If you do not play a FULL game in the game prior, or get red carded, you CANNOT reserve or go on the field in a higher grade.

This includes 4th XV reserving for the 3rd XV or the 16A’s reserving for the Opens.

Favours Joeys given their depth. But you have to play FULL Game prior? What if you come on as say hooker and play all but 5 mins? Isn't there a restriction on how much rugby you can play in one day? Like 90 mins or something?

their 3rds lost to High?
Newington don't compete in the thirds competition. Also, few 2nds players moved up to play firsts, and i believe a handful of boys were used as fresh substitutions for the firsts game, which now isn't allowed and will require these boys to play the team below.

Not really sure what your point is when you say they dont play in thirds comp, isn't still their 3rd best side?

Well since the 3rd xv don't have a premiership to fight for, it allows the rugby staff at Newington to spend more time on developing the first and second teams. If Newington were competing in the 3rd xv next year, they would field a much stronger side to the team this year, as the students will now have a reason to want to play for the 3rd xv (aka a side competing for a premiership).

just how test rugby is meant to be i.e. players used to actually have a genuine reason to go off

Why don't Newington play in the 3rd XV competition?

I agree with everything except Riverview. I see the opposite from the 2 games I’ve watched so far.

I think they’re playing well as a team (so are the 2nds) but they lack a player or 2, probably in the tight 5. I think the goal line d showed them working well together even though Waverley showed no thinking whilst camped on the line for 10 mins with View down a player.

I will say the difference between some of the 2nds and 1sts is minimal which can be huge in a the 2 round season. So you are right in regards to cattle in that sense.

they should definitely be playing in that comp like all the other schools
The reason that Newington is not in the 3rd XV competition dates back to the time of the reinstated 3rd XV competition in 2012 when it was determined that Grammar 1st XV and High 1st XV would leave the 1st and 2nd competition and compete against the 3rd XV from other schools. TAS 1st XV joined the competition at that time and as I understand, there were 9 GPS schools and Newington elected not to play in the competition.

I have long been an advocate for the inclusion of Newington 3rd XV in the competition but it would mean a weekly bye for one school.

Forum members like Black & White and Joker would be able to provide more historical information about this.

Word vomit on my part.

I think View have squad depth through 1st & 2nds which bodes well but I don't think they have enough of the top level talent or brutes to cause the amount of upsets theyll need to win the comp.

I hope I'm completely wrong (judging by my first two rounds of tipping this is extremely possible) They certainly aren't fading like the team last year.

This is all good. I would only add a fun fact. The winners of the last 3rd XV competition prior to its resumption was SJC in 1961 (pictured)
The team were presented with the silver jug which had been the 3rds premiership trophy since Kings created it in 1909.
The jug went missing over the decades and Joeys had to donate a new shield in 2013 when TAS won its first title.

The trials are over and now it comes down this. 10 rounds of tipping ahead.
This where getting the margin correct really pays off.
The maximum you could score in one round is 30 points (Three wins with you picking the margin)
If you pick one DRAW it is worth 20. These though are rare.

LAST CHANCE OFFER

If you wish to join in this weekend you can and you will given the same points as those who forgot to tip for the trial games.
There are still plenty of space to join.

No new tippers will be able to join after Friday 12 May

Welcome back KOB1987 who led last year all season till two props ran him down on the bell.
