There seems to be absolutely no consideration for the mental benefits that sport provides young men (and women) in terms of socialising and finding a release from the pressures of being a teenager in these already challenging times.
Youth suicide and depression is a real issue in society and sadly it has touched a number of schools this year in the worst possible way.
Removing kids from sport cuts off another avenue to escape the tedious boredom of home.

As do I. I feel for all those businesses that make major money off the yr 12 graduates each year.
The limo drivers, dress makers, ambulance drivers etc...
Do not get me started on the major hit to the QLD economy with the cancellation of schoolies

I note that it's only a recommendation, not a directive. Not at this point anyway. I guess we will see what comes out of the meeting today but given that the recommendations for the continuation of sport - i.e. no spectators, only players and coaches, etc - were in place for the GPS comp anyway, they would be probably making a strong case to NSW Health that a GPS bubble already exists. Especially if they allow community sport to continue. The mingling of school communities from different zones seems to be targeted more at multi school events/carnivals, not A v B.

Even more ridiculous, CAS Athletics season cancelled. No physical contact in athletics.
You can go to a park and exercise, but you can't run round an oval. You can go to a gym and follow each other onto a treadmill, but can't run around an athletics track.

Not to mention the risk of a lot of teenage boys with no outlet for all that testosterone. The old Joeys headmaster back in the 80’s was often heard to say “tired boys are good boys”.

Just received correspondence from the school - "all AAGPS 2020 winter sport competitions and fixtures will be suspended effective immediately".
Well that suddenly frees up my Saturdays.

Totally agree and such inconsistencies will make it so much harder to take. Why word the statement as “suspended”?

Well I guess that because some of the competitions have already started that is what they are doing for those competitions. And I guess in some small way it gives them flexibility should circumstances change to reverse their decision, however unlikely that might be. Having been forced into this decision at very short notice they may want time to consider whether it is possible to still play later.

The AAGPS Chairman, Mr Mark Ticehurst, in consultation with the GPS Headmasters’ Standing Committee, wishes to provide the following update regarding GPS sporting programmes in 2020:
In light of the NSW Health correspondence “Minimising Risk of COVID-19 Transmission in NSW School Communities”, dated 14 August 2020, and in the best interest of the safety and welfare of our staff, students, volunteers and the entire AAGPS community and our many family and friends, The GPS Headmasters’ Standing Committee has announced that all AAGPS 2020 winter sport competitions and fixtures will be suspended effective immediately.
The remainder of the 2020 calendar will remain as per scheduled, with schools permitted to conduct sporting activities within current Government health and safety guidelines in preparation for the re-commencement of AAGPS sporting fixtures when it is deemed safe and appropriate to do so.
The AAGPS acknowledges that advice and the current situation has, and will continue to change rapidly. As the situation evolves, the AAGPS will continue to monitor, and act accordingly throughout the remainder of 2020.

Particularly as to my knowledge there has been no case of the virus being transmitted during a game of sport (among the participants). As far as I'm aware (from the news coverage), the cases of school transmissions were at either debating competitions or religious retreats.
We've had vaccinations for measles, mumps, chicken pox and other diseases for over 50 years and as a society we still can't eliminate those so one suspects that trying to eliminate COVID is an impossible task.
We had 5 new cases yesterday in NSW and 7 the day before and to listen to some journos you'd think that there were bodies piling up in the streets.

Newington are intending to play internal games on Saturday to keep sport going and be ready to restart if that is at all possible. However, I doubt there's enough time left this term to complete rugby and other winter sports.
Terribly disappointing for all but especially for those boys currently in Year 12.
