Not sure how you reached the conclusion that Scots were the much better side. Joeys had more possession, more territory, spent more time in Scots' 22 and created more scoring opportunities but came up with more errors at critical times. They also played a more structured game: good yards up the middle, consistently over the gain line, good post-contact metres especially from their big props, and only then going wide.
By sharp contrast Scots tended to go wide very early, often off first & second phase trying to give space to their big out-centre & fullback, both big, strong units. They had their best period in the 3rd quarter when they had a lot of ball & field position but that was really the only period of the game they dominated.
Joeys have a bigger pack than last year, especially the front row, and they were blowing pretty hard after an hour. Scots would have done better to keep it tighter at that point to take advantage of a more mobile pack - just as Joeys did last year when they won a lot of games in the last quarter with a much smaller but very fit pack - but Scots still preferred to go wide at nearly every opportunity. Surprising Joeys didn't sub off their props, both of whom got through a load of work, but they were still there at the end. Likely the coaching team decided to build up their match fitness as they're a couple of big lads.
To say it was Scots game for the last 10 minutes and 'a little lapse cost them the game' is a strange call. In that period Joeys had almost all the possession and it was played mostly in Scots' half. The 'little lapse' was actually a 20-phase Joeys effort that went from a line out just outside their 22 and finished with the winning try. I thought they were very good value for the win especially having lost their playmaker, who was having a great game, shortly after halftime.
