Campbell magnay surely played NRC 2014 and he is born Nov. 10 1996

I can see Magnay was listed on the bench for the Round 2 Game for Q Country last year (30 August 2014). That would make him 17 yrs 9 months and 20 days.

Jooste's DOB is July 7 1997. He came on off the bench for the Spirit in Round 2 on 29 August 2015. That would make him 18 years, 1 month and 22 days.

Magnay is the youngest NRC debutant by 4 months.

Jooste remains the only player to debut in NRC while still attending School.

Ok, I've discovered 19 players that were a part of the 2007 ARC, that are part of 2015 NRC squads. This is not including guys in the RWC squad (nor James Horwill).

Without googling, let's see if you can name them. Bonus points for knowing who they played for in 2007.
Good news everyone. I miscounted. We've got them all. I'm sure you are all relieved

You were on the money with your original count of 19, as Stars announce Todd Pearce in their lineup for their round 9 fixture.

The Death of the Penalty Goal Attempt?

After 33 games in NRC 2015, there have been only 3 Penalty Goal attempts. Two have been successful. All have been in the last 10 minutes of the game.

1 successful Penalty Goal in the 76th minute gave their team a 3 point victory. This was probably important in the context of the game.
1 missed Penalty Goal attempt in the 80th minute left their team remaining 8 points in front. This was probably used to wind the clock down, and if successful would have ensured a victory even if the opposition managed to sneak a last dash converted try after 80 minutes.
1 successful Penalty Goal in the 73rd minute gave their team a 20 point victory. This was probably not important in the context of the game.

In 2014 there were 14 Penalty Goal attempts, 9 successes and 5 misses.
6 of these were in the last 2 minutes of the game, 2 missed.

In the context of the Penalty Goal attempt influencing the game result, 5 of these 14 PG attempts were in "close games" (drawn or win/loss by <8 points), 1 missed. 4 of these Penalty Goal Attempts were in games where the final margin was > 20 points, and in the grand scheme of things mattered little.

Have we missed the Penalty Goal Attempt?
It saves about 90 seconds of "dead time" in the game while the kicker does the "Biggarena".

With the chance of a 5 or 8 point score, as opposed to 2 ( or 3 in the old money) points, has the attacking Lineout Rolling Maul from 5-15 metres out, which many would say most of these are little more than legalised obstruction, done more to "kill" off the Penalty Goal attempt than the reduction in points value of the Penalty Goal?

Omar Comin'

Chilla Wilson (44)
I don't think it would be much different even if mauls didn't exist at all. And it's not like you score from a maul every attempt anyway.

It's just a risk v reward thing. You'd have to kick 5 penalty goals to beat 1 converted try. By taking the kicks you're giving up your best chances to score tries, and you're giving up territory. That's often worth it when the equation is 3 vs 5 or 7, but not so much when it's 2 vs 5 or 8. You could spend most of a game dominating but you might only score 10 or 12 points if you're taking penalty goals ever time. If the other team is going for tries chances are they'll score a couple. That doesn't mean they're easy to score but by continuing to attack you build up pressure which leads to tries and/or yellow cards.

So 15 players are 19 or under.

And 38 players are 20 or under - would that be enough to select a team of 23?

i.e. Pick an NRC under 20 rep side to give the Baabaas a warm-up match before the NZ tour.

Make the Aus u20's coach their coach and he can get an early sighter on his prospects for the following year's Junior World Cup (the first selection criteria can be U20 as at the upcoming 1st of Jan so as to be relevant age-wise -- but extras to make up the numbers may be needed so 20 year olds or players uncertain on residential status might be included).

A possible form Under 20 team (born 1995) could be along the lines of:

15 Placid
14 Kellaway
13 Magnay
12 Tuipulotu
11 Jones
10 Jooste
9 Tuttle
8 Korczyk
7 Croke
6 Hanigan
5 Potgieter
4 Winter
3 Tupou
2 Mafi
1 Sa'aga

16 Wilkinson
17 Lomax
18 Ainsley
19 ??
20 ??
21 Sorovi
22 Third
23 Havili

Miss anyone?

Nice work, Reg.

Yeah. Probably not quite enough players to select from for a strict NRC 19s/20s side.

But maybe before I drop the idea, perhaps select from players in either the 2015 U20s Aus Championship OR the 2015 NRC comp that are eligible for next year's JWC. Get them to play the Baabaas? Dunno

Not quite relevant to the topic of this thread, but given recent posts are looking at ages of players, it would be handy to have an analysis of the ages of the props who played during the competition. It seems to me that there were many who were around 20 or less, and that the majority were in their early 20s. Bearing in mind the epic struggles the competing scrums have had there is a lot to like about the strength and skill levels of the props and would be intriguing to see who might make it to higher levels in future years.

I agree as what was pleasing with nrc was to see the quality of young props coming through.
