not sure if he has yet. Played for the Reds (academy?) in a recent 7s tournament.

He may be offered a spot in the Reds Academy.

He was in the program but from what I saw he wasn't there. And there were many who thugh his inclusion was wrong.

As far as I am concerned he should now earn any place in any team by coming thru the ranks.
He played his hand and when he got trumped he should not be given a wild card entry straight into a team.

Also - IMHO he's not that good. NTS don't rate him and he isn't a shaddow of Moraghan.

He was the best winger of the Oz schools tournament in 2008 but who knows now after a year out of the game?

He was in the 2008 Schools team so would be a year younger than Luke Morahan who was in the team in 2007.

But not being rated by the NTS is not a good look.

I got it.

he might be a chance for a reds academy position if the Reds decide to promote someone after losing Fetoia and Mclinden to injury in the off-season, Vaalu is also looking to be out injured for the early part of 2010

Well, that proves my memory is bunk. 2 years after I must have confused his size with somebody else - but hopefully not his ability then.

But you're right speckie: he should earn his stripes. We are too fond of pushing schoolboy players into senior roles and it would do no harm for one to be held back for a change.

Any kid who is good enough will prove himself in the end. A year or two of being held back for a change will do no harm at all to a teenager and if they are good enough to play Super rugby - who knows - they may even learn their profession before they play in it, and not have to learn on the job as so many recent schoolboys have been expected to do.

I am all for the retention of talented kids that come through the system or otherwise and Nicky should have by all right had some form of rugby life ahead of him - however.

As he made a very public change of codes, one that was used very well by the AFL in their promoiion of the game certainly up these ways, I am totally against the system saying to him, come on in from the cold, put your feet up, have it easy.

He should now be treated like any other player who has as yet to make a name for himself - in club land. Prove himself worthy of rugby's support and promotion. I would rather the code foster player who has rugby in their heart, true believers.
Nicky has shown he can be bought or at least that rugby is not his first choice of sport - so how is that supposed to make us feel. Warm and comfortable - I din't think so. He has to prove his allegiance to rugby.

I can take a kick in the face but to allow him to resume where he left off withour effort is a bit rich.

He's definitely got to earn his place, but I personally don't really feel offended if a kid wants to try different things (hell, even for money). If I loved sports equally or thereabouts, I'd want to go where my talents were best used and where I could acheive the most. If he's decided that's rugby now, great. I doubt he's going to be automatically selected for anything as he appears to think in interviews though.

well last time i saw a photo of him, he looked quite physically developed, now i suppose you then have to weigh up whether you want someone who is physically capable but hasnt played for a while or someone who is physically below the requirements but has actually been playing(eg blair connor).

Nothing against Blair but he looked way to small to be playing super14.

Agree he needs to earn a stripe or two but seriously EVERYBODY was frothing over the kid a little while ago - but boy don't we have some outside backs and wingers in particular. This bloke should be a champion and hold down a spot for years and years (Like Morahan)

Maybe they just breed at a faster rate than the intelligent hard working forwards

Can't hold it against him that he wanted a few bucks - the Academies pay like $5,000 so a kid still has to collect coke bottles on weekends and cash them in so that he can live - alright for the wealthy blokes who can afford to support their kid but pretty unfair on the average father (and therefor player).

thats right Lee, a few months before getting selected for the Australian Schoolboys side he said he was still interested in AFL and that the Sunshine Coast AFL side kept in regular touch with him.

Now as much as i would love to say teach him a lesson and send him back to grades i dont think the Reds have the luxury of been able to do so, if he is the best person for the job physically, mentally and skill wise then he should be given first shot.

Don't know who he is but if he's a back, big & got talent then we'll take him at the Reds especially if he has a good kicking game.

Any current pictures of the lad?

Sounds like he may make a very good fullback.

If he played Aussie Rules as a kid and he can run there's only one spot for him: in the 15 jumper.

He didn't kick the ball when I saw him in the Oz Schools tournament in Canberra last year; but geez - he sure ran with it. As I have said before he was a bit like Rabbit O'Connor as a schools player and you held your breath every time he had the ball.

Mind you: it was so bloody cold every day of that tournament people were running a lot to keep warm.

Nobody has any clue if this is true or not. However good he was in last year's tournament, or for Oz Schools in 2008, he has missed his first season out of school. Even if he was fitted into the Academy now and was a star on the training paddock, it wouldn't mean beans and it would be unfair to lads who have missed out on an Academy spot anyway.

As for being the best person physically: I still think that he's not a big lad and if I am right he needs to hit the gym - and in a different way to what the Aussie Rules trainers had him doing.

No; he's still only 18, or so. Let him prove himself in Colts or senior rugby in 2010 and in doing so learn the game.

The only thing against that perhaps is that all the Brumbies mafia were at the Canberra 2008 schools tournament every day and they would have assessed him as I did: the best winger of the week and near enough to being the best player in any position.

I bet they are having a nibble.

well one would hope that the Reds have sent out a scout or brought him in to test the waters for potential recrutiment, who cares if he hasnt played in 12months, you either tie him up now or risk losing him. Its not exactly hard to test out someones physical ability or skill set, yet he might lack the match fitness and form, but isnt that excatly what the academy is for? to bring players up to standard?

If he is as good as some of you would have us believe, then he obviously has the talent, you chuck him in the academy he is up to S14 in 12months, you leave him out in the wilderness he will take 36 months before he is ready, if not picked up by the NRL or another S14 side.
