What's their influence and what do they control? I don't know if it's just me but since the NRL has started to make moves removing them from ownership of (basically) Rugby League in Australia I feel they may start holding us to ransom.

There has already been cases of where this company has thrown it's weight around in relation to Rugby. Threats to boycott the RWC (http://www.theaustralian.com.au/bus...-rugby-world-cup/story-e6frg996-1226073980091) and I've also know they have previously ordered the NZ to reveal which players will not be playing certain games to put a price on the contest.

Is there any other examples that I have left out?

It's also concerning that channel 9 who know shows International test matches only show it live into NSW and QLD. Victoria and Western Australia get snubbed. This is something I believe happens also in the NRL, it's very restricting for our sport.

Is there any connection between news limited and channel 9?

Answers to all my questions will be greattly appreciated. I only ask because I am worried about this dirty company.

Not if you read the furore over the SBW interview during the SOO.

news limited financially prop our game up, whatever else it does so be unless there is another company willing to pay what they do.

Is selling our sole for money really for the good of the game though?

Surely, it's important that we gets games televised in Victoria and Western Australia.

I think we shouldn't allow any company dictate anything to us for any purpose or reason.

news keep there end of the bargon and provide good money, i dont think its selling ones sole to then at least talk to them and find ways to work together to get more viewers for fox that would translate into more money for aus rugby. its a professional game, as long as its done professionally, compramise will lead to success.

Alright fair enough, but what about Channel 9 not showing the games into Western Australia and Victoria?

Yes, foxtel show the games there but Free to air will be able to bring in a lot more viewers then PayTV ever will be able too. Being exclusively on Fox everywhere in Australia except NSW and QLD will make it hard to rate as high as other football codes if not impossible.

its chicken and egg though isnt it. News foxtel money is paying for the game at the moment, channel 9 have shown that what they pay they feel they can get back by showing the game in a couple of markets only, therefore what nine have ended up paying isnt very much in the scheme of things or they would be putting alot more effort in.

Speaking of News Limited didn't they threaten to fine or withdraw money from any of the Sanzar nations if they cheapen the super rugby/ Tri nations product after the 2007 saga of the Saffas & Kiwis resting players?

So wouldn't that mean that PDV & Co should be fined for this tour?

Makes sense. But that opens up questions about our game. We should of forced them to show it into a number of markets and not just the markets they wished too. If they aren't paying much for the rights, that isn't good. Didn't they out bid ch 7 for the rights?

Sorry about my spelling guys, I meant souls not soles.

I think this has been brought up and answered in other threads.

But you did mention something that I've wondered about, whether the agreement existed for Super Rugby or not. If so, then all three nations are guilty.

you cant force someone to do something if your product isnt sellable, its basically asking K-mart to make a window display of something that doesnt sell. we as a community ont hese boards have a warped view cos we love rugby so much that everyone else will want to watch it to. the stark reality is that 9 knows that playing a movie or replay of the block will draw better in certain markets. If the ARU sit down and say right, we have a game here and we want it live to all corners of the earth and beyond, nine can pull out there ratings breakdown and go your going to cost us 100,000 viewers, so we will pay this much less money.

the only thing aus rugby can do to get the respect that people around here want and the ARU no doubts wants itself is for the wallabies to go on a winning streak and for it to hit a nerve that makes it cool again.

I would think that Rugby would rate better then any old movie or replay of some crap show.

I am also a Rugby League supporter and know that over here in Western Australia, despite what the networks say, State of Origin on delay rates higher then their shitty movies they shove down our throats. Imagine what that event could get if it was live or closer to live here, as kick off would be 6pm here. I rate International Rugby on the same level as State of Origin Rugby League and would think it would rate just as well, at least the games between Australia and New Zealand would. I think you may be under selling our game a little bit. I know we aren't living in a rugby country but i would like to think that if we had better business people in charge of our game we might get the game into more areas.

Even if it does underrate those those shitty movies, if they put it on with consistency for 2 years or so, in the third year it would rate really well.

There is definitely a market for Rugby in my home state, i think many people under sell that. The crowds at International and Western Force matches prove that. If State of Origin Rugby League can rate over 300,000 in Melbourne, then i think we could at least get 200,000 there and around 150,000 here to start with and we can build off the back of that.

I think the ARU are too QLD and NSW centric for the overall health of the game in this country, they need to stand up to broadcasters like the AFL do with their glorified netball games.

Sorry it's probably been mentioned already but are the other competing sports broadcast on free to air? I'm just curious because in SA, England and I think NZ, Super Rugby and 3N are only shown on pay tv.

In Australia rugby union internationals are on free to air in some parts of the country. Rugby League club football (the NRL, sorta like super rugby but with 15 Australian and 1 new Zealand team and is a different code of rugby). Rugby League also has state of origin and international matches on free to air in some parts of the country. Other parts of the country get of all this shown on free to air late night and early morning. Rugby League club matches (selected ones) in England is also on free to Air.

Aussie Rules (the AFL, people who don't like it call it gayfl) is a football code entirely different from any other and it's hard to see it's connection to different rugby forms that all football codes around the world grew from. That is an 16 team competition with all teams being Australian and is shown live and at regular times in the areas where rugby union and rugby league aren't. And late night in places where those codes are. Aussie Rules resembles netball in my opinion.

Netball (club and internationals) are shown on free to air in Australia, soccer internationals are on free to air but club football isn't.

Cricket is shown in Australia on free to air, the American Super Bowl is also shown on free to air in Australia.

I hope this answers your question, it's all the sport that I know of because those (except the AFL) are the ones I follow.

Thanks, so a fair amount is actually free to air. I understand now the argument about having rugby union fta too.
