Hey folks,

I've decided to spend my savings on a dream of a lifetime and heading to the RWC in New Zealand with the missus.

I have started to research flights, accom and tickets and am a bit lost I have to say... The flights I can sort myself, but if anyone knows some good and cheapish accomodation and means of travel to and from the New Plymouth, Auckland and Rotorua, then you would have my gratitude!

I reckon I can get about the bones of 3 - 4 weeks off work, so the following matches would be the aim..

Ireland - USA - New Plymouth 11 of September 2011
Ireland - Australia - Auckland - 17th of September 2011
Ireland - Russia - Rotorua - 25th of September 2011

Cheers guys!!

I'll keep you posted, this trip is sure to ruin me financially, but hey you can't take it with you!

The accommodation is going to be the hard part. How are you travelling? Just you, a group of mates, family with kids?

hi, its myself and my significant other, so I would imagine that that would be easiers than a family or a group...

A couple of people have said a camper van would be the idea so im going to have a look into that, would be a good opportunity to see the country too!

Did that myself when paddling in the world outrigger sprint champs few years ago at Lake Karapiro near Hamilton, it was a lot easier that way when I was on my own as had the freedom to travel to east coast and Rotorua during the breaks in schedule, however it was just a converted Hiace van with no facilities apart from a mattress, not sure how it would go with two people squeezed in it, might be a better idea to look around for a better but dearer model, but daresay these would have been taken by now...

Apparently if you know a local they can book you a motel for a reasonable price.

I've heard that many of the motels are listing themselves as full because they know what a roudy rugger tourist could potentially do to their rooms.

If you want a campervan, get booking now fella. Some friends of mine just booked one and they tried at least 10 places before they found one available.

I see that you are looking at the driving option. There is no better way to see the Land of the Darkness in all its glory than by vehicle.

If you are up for a bit of adventure and have some time up your sleve, then on the way back up the country from New Plymouth to Auckland, I would recommend travelling From New Plymouth to Taumaranui via Whangamomona.

This is a bit of a windy old goat track but Whangamomona (population about 20)is fair dinkum Duelling Banjos territory. The pub there is well worth a visit. There is very little else!

Once you get to Taumaranui, you can pick up the main highway north.

Several seasons ago the Jarses did this route. If you want to see some of the real NZ, then this drive will take you past plenty of it. I can guarantee you will not be overwhelmed by RWC bores on this part of your journey.

I'd be trying to get a camper van of some sort. My missus & I did this last year, the camp grounds were really good with great facilities and the option of driving yourself and setting your own schedule is fantastic.

Second all of the above. NZ by campervan is really the way to go.

There are usually stacks of them available via the internet or at the airport, but with RWC and accommodation tight, best to get in as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

Yes Campervan can be good - just make sure you dont try too much 'freedom camping" in laybys & country roads.

You could be woken by loud banging noises on the van roof.

Only to find that when you get out to look, someone will have left slices of bread on your van roof and there will be 20 seagulls all tapping away at it and crapping everywhere!

There are far more invasive and destructive ways to tell itinerant travellers to "move on".

Gotta give the Darkness supporters some credit for their inventiveness.

Someone should tell the Waverley Council this little trick. Backpackers staying in vans on the roads surrounding the beach is apparently a bit of a problem there.

Plenty of hungry seagulls there to assist to contol "the pests".

If anyone is planning on doing some skiiing/snowboarding in between matches, there is an awesome $1 Lift Pass deal on for Whakapapa on the Living Social website today.

Just chopped off a few hundred $$ off my trip as can buy 4 per person and I'm heading there for 4 days between the Ireland match in Auckland and USA in Wellington. Deal expries Oct 9th so good for anyone attending the group match stages.
