The news comes after much speculation that New Zealand Rugby is not open to signing the former Hurricanes halfback following his current stint in the Japanese Top League.

Unless some kind of WR (World Rugby) dispensation can be obtained, Fakatava's injury means that as he can't be AB capped this year he misses the 31/12/21 cutover in the qualification-by-residency from three years to five (apparently at least part of his time in NZ on a scholarship doesn't count) & earliest he could be in Black would be 2023.

^ that's a valid argument BUT isn't it equally valid to say that had he not come to NZ on that scholarship he might well be playing village footy back in Tonga (or not at all)? And that NZ rugby, having invested considerable time & expense to get him to where he's currently at, are entitled to benefit from his services? In a perfect world, of course, he'd play NPC for Hawkes Bay, Super Rugby for Clan & Test footy for Tonga but the reality is that the rugby economy is trickle-down - witness also now-Samoan Michael Ala'alatoa heading to Leinster.

As expected all 26 Unions approved the SL deal & I heard on news this morning that Maori RU, having been given assurances re: haka etc not being appropriated, were also in favour so NZRPA are very much alone in their opposition (although I did see David Moffett quoted as being against it, too).
