Last week it was confirmed that the NSW GPS 1st and 2nd XV competitions in 2012 will involve just 6 schools: The schools will play two rounds, home and away, and play just one trial game before that. What are the other GPS schools doing? Their 1st XVs will play in a competition with the 3rd XVs of the

Another good article: Thanks Lee.
Grammar would answer the quote from Pooks by resort to the proposition that they are not an HSC factory and, though i cant be certain, I think there are "plenty" of boys who get under 95 TER.
Funnily enough people carrying no great torch for rugby in the school community are not particularly impressed with the recent developments and the master in charge of admissions in Year 7 has told me that he is looking at a boys extra curricular activities in the hope of broadening the catchment.
Not sure its working because an old boy of Joeys, whom you would remember I am sure Lee Grant , told me during the week that his son was offered a spot at Grammar but chose Shore "because of the sport"!

The devil will be in the detail! This has so much capacity to destroy the tribalism that was GPS rugby - the whole of school versus whole of school carnival of Saturday sport. I do not envy the poor sod whose miserable task it will be to schedule this. I'll take a bet now, that Joeys vs Iggies will remain one of only a few occasions when a whole school takes on another whole school.

It's a numbers game: King's v Joeys v View v Shore v Scots will be fairly comprehensive fixtures with most age groups going down to the Fs and the Opens to Eighths. Newington do stick out like a sore thumb, a competitive Firsts but a crap Fourths. However, I'll commit sacrilege here and point out Newington do have a lot of soccer teams.

MOTH how appropriate that your Wallaby at this time is Johnnie Wallace - not only a Grammar boy, Waratah (1927-28 in particular), Wallaby but also rowed in 3 winning heads of the river!!

Sorry - i think you missed my point.

I agree with everything you say, but when 1sts & 2nds play 2 rounds of home & away and the rest of the school plays every other GPS school once with a truck load of trials thrown in to fill up the dance card - it is mathematically possible to have a draw where the firsts & seconds are the only games being played between 2 schools on any given weekend. Even wierder, you could by poor scheduleing have Joeys Vs Newington at Newington, when the rest of SJC are playing Kings at Kings and Newington are taking on Shore at Northbridge.

I think you'll find the lower age groups will mirror the 1sts and 2nds comp, and only the 3rds will be different.

So the fixtures/scheduling should be no more difficult than usual.

how bad is it that I am no longer considering Grammar for my boys because of this. Not that I think they would be 1st XV players anyway, but that the sport now takes such a back seat.

But I can't send them to any other GPS school either. It's like when the bears dropped out of the NRL I couldn't support any other team as I'd always barracked against them. I'll have to go CAS

MOTH - are you not forgetting that in recent years there can be upto 15 different schools playing a team from one of the bigger rugby schools. Even on a 'comp w/e' there have been 14 other schools that teams like the E, G, and H teams and the 5ths-13ths play various other schools in each age group.

It has only been the top 3 teams for each age group that have played the same school as the 1sts (excluding the Scots Glengarry age group which often required TAS teams filling in)! AND these teams were often from ISA and other school affiliations and not GPS.

So your disappointment of the great tradition (40+ teams all playing same school) is outdated and from a bygone era.

No you won't. You know, I know, we all know that that is just not on. I did not attend Grammar, but I fwill fully support your sons attending and maybe, just maybe, making the difference. This could mean a group of young men leaving Rugby, or a group of young men learning the game. Consider

As my wife reminds me every Saturday in winter: their at school to learn not play rugby. They can learn their rugby at home.

I hope you don't live too close to Cranbrook. One of my old buddies, a GPS old boy - no names no pack drill, often chants "If you can't get a girl, get.....":)
