late match report Aloys V Knox

I hadn't been to Aloys home ground since 1977 and it looks a lot smaller than it did then. The weather did the right thing and there was barely a drop of rain during the game and at times it was almost hot when the clouds parted for a while.
Aloys began strongly and for significant periods of the first half looked almost in control. Their scrum and line out was shading the Knox forwards. Knox defence however was up to the task and it was an arm wrestle. An Aloys penalty goal attempt almost broke the deadlock - I wasn't sure what happened, the referee awarded the goal and players headed back to half way. Knox is upset with something and after the referee confers with one of the linesmen the decision is reversed and Knox restarts play with a 25 m drop out. I suspect the kick didn't go through the posts but how the original decision was overturned puzzles me. I once saw Mark Ella put up a bomb at Milner Field in a club rugby semifinal - It happened to go through the posts and the referee awarded Randwick a field goal. I digress.
Aloys soon after scored a well deserved try as weight of possession and territory finally paid off. Knox bounced back and scored two tries in what seemed like two minutes. The game returned to an even contest although Knox was comfortably ahead on the scoreboard. I was a bit disappointed that the Aloys grandstand of kids thought it was ok to cheer a missed conversion but perhaps I am old fashioned and I wouldn't dare suggest that poor sportsmanship isn't endemic.
Knox seems to think they can score from any place on the field and very often this season they have been able to back this up. The second half was fiercely contested without the result ever being in doubt.
Knox V Cranbrook should be a great game next week and a great curtain raiser to the Tahs v Crusaders. Here is hoping there will be 70000 plus at the game (Tahs that is - plans for Knox's 70000 capacity stadium are still being reviewed by council).
