AUSTRALIAN RUGBY UNION ANNOUNCES A NEW NATIONAL REGISTRATION DAY

Australian Rugby Union today announced it was joining forces with Australia’s five FxPro Super Rugby teams to launch the code’s first National Registration Day on Saturday, February 18.

Players of all ages – juniors and seniors – will have the chance to get information on Rugby in 2012, sign up with a local club and meet their favourite FX Pro Super Rugby and Qantas Wallabies stars as part of a nationwide campaign to recruit new players to the game.

ARU Managing Director and CEO, John O’Neill AO, encouraged everyone to get along to one of the many events happening around the country.

“Whether you’re a first time player or a Rugby veteran, national Registration Day is for everyone and I encourage families and fans to come along and be part of Rugby in 2012,” Mr O’Neill said.

“Over the past few years we’ve seen a growing interest in Rugby both at the grassroots and international level, which is why this year ARU has teamed up with the Australian FxPro Super Rugby teams to help further promote our great game and the new season across the country.

“National Registration Day is one of a number of new initiatives ARU has introduced this year to assist clubs attract new players and retain current players.

“One of those initiatives is a new online registration and payment system, which clubs can use to contact members and players to remind them to update their contact details, register and pay for the upcoming season.”

More details on National Registration Day can be found at www.rugby.com.au and below is a list of the major events happening in the capital cities on Saturday February 18 for the inaugural National Registration Day.

It does sound like a good idea except for those of us playing at crescent head Rugby 7's on the 18th of Feb!

This is a great idea that was poorly executed. Rugby League did the same thing except they had their ad on the front of the sport page of the biggest newspaper in QLD and they did it a month ago.

speaking of league: a comparison of the amount of stuff on offer in Rebel for league teams vs the limited Union presence suggests more might be done in that area.

The Reds advertised this as a 'Fan Day' at least a week ago. Wonder if the ARU has just tried to tag onto something that the franchises were doing. Either way organisation not a strong point. But I think most of us knew that.. Seemed like quite a few people at the Red's one. From the pics on twitter.

Alert members may have noticed that despite being a Tahs supporter I have from time to time been critical of their administration. This is only because I expect organisations from the senior state to have higher standards than those from the remote areas which the mother colony saw fit to cast off and leave to their own devices.
So it is perhaps not surprising that in Melbourne the National Registration Day is being conducted in "Gosch's Paddock". A "paddock"? How incredibly gauche. I don't think Sydney has had a "paddock" since we stopped building huts in wattle-and-daub. Still, my mother taught us never to poke fun at those less fortunate. So I have always taken the view that those south of the Murray were more to be pitied than made fun of. But a "paddock"? Surely someone at the ARU could have tugged someone's coat and pointed out that rugby does have standards.
So what have the various cities done to celebrate this wonderful initiative of a National Registration Day which in years to come may well rival Australia Day and Anzac Day? Brisbane has set aside just three hours. Three hours - it's supposed to be a day! Melbourne and Canberra are even worse - just two hours! And Perth? The best they could do was pin a note on their front door reading: "Check with your local club for details". If we knew where our local club was we wouldn't have to come along to the bloody National Registration Day.
And Sydney? My heart swelled with pride when I noted how enthusiastically and comprehensively Sydney had responded. We know how to do things in style. It's supposed to be a "Day" so we've hired the Sydney Football Stadium for fourteen hours! How good is that? Although I'm not sure of the wisdom of encouraging drunks to stagger in after midnight to sign up. I suppose that's why they have only been given thirty minutes to do so.

Its good to get your facts right there Bruce. QLD had a Reds Fan Day into which the National Sign on Day was incorporated. All Junior Clubs were represented, but at the same time most clubs had their own sign on day at their club on the same day as well. Wests Jnrs for instance timed theirs for a couple of hours after the Reds Fan Day, whilst my own boys' Jnr Club had theirs in the morning (and this morning as well).

Thinking about the practicalities of it all, all clubs having their own sign on opportunities on the national sign up day is the way to go as thats where the regional breakdown is. The Centralised sign up opportunity at Ballymore was a possible way to sign up new players who may not have played before and have been brought to the game by the success of the Reds. The Rookies2Reds program, designed to bring new players to the game and then to a club (which distinguishes it from AFL AUskick) was also heavily promoted on the day and in fact trial sessions were over subscribed.

Speaking to the BJRU on the day clubs are experiencing considerable growth this year.

So to simplify it as a simple
Brisbane has set aside just three hours. Three hours - it's supposed to be a day!
really misses the strategy behind the recruitment and retention efforts of the code up here. It is more than just a day for us, but a concerted strategy - a KPI if you like, which is why figures like last year's 33% increase in participation are so important for the QRU.

Feel free to criticize the hell out of NSWRU, Sydney Rugby Inc etc as I am sure you are rather intimately aware of their dealings, but perhaps steer clear of the areas you may not have the same knowledge of.

Surely you can convince a six year old that mini's rugby is soccer, Scarfy?

Or does he need to convince she of the final decision? I am still constantly amazed at mothers (generalising here) who think that what they see at Super level is how the game is played at U7's. They just need to watch how the junior runs at half time of the Super Rugby game are to realise this. Maybe we need to convince Fox to televise them. Reg - can you get this incorporated into Reds TV?

yep, stats show the same. Jnr Rugby is one of the safest sports going around and you are right, suckerforred, we need to keep pushing that message.
