Argentina vs Romania. Must win award for longest try from start to finish. Went the length of the field 3 times before the Argies scored. Can someone post a link to this try?

The Greatest Try of All Time, 1973 All Blacks vs. Barbarians

This try had the following components:
Lineout steal - Darkness possession
Box Kick from 1/2 (sound familiar) - BarBar possession
Return kick (high and late tackle - familiar?) Darkness possession
short run, tackle, ruck win, 1/2 pass to receiver to kick ball away - BarBar possession
The Real try movement starts with BarBars in possession:
#10 BarBar eludes black 6, black #12 misses tackle, 2 side steps and pass to support player. Pass 1
#14 Black high tackle on support player who offloads. Pass 2
BarBar pass 3
BarBar draw and pass (Black attempted intercept). Pass 4
Barbar offload. Pass 5
BarBar pass to #10 who started stuff. Pass 6
Black missed tackle - BarBar#10 scores.

6 passes, 2 side steps, a couple of draw and passes, two missed tackles, 75 metre movement, try finished by the bloke who started it. Meh:fishing I've seen better. Sure others have.

What are the components of a great try?
Team work
Individual brilliance
Sustained pressure
Against the run of play
Length of the field play
Practiced Precision
Spontaneousness (play what is in front of you)
Underdogs score
Ball through lots of hands
Impact on the final score
Tries against tribal enemies

The beauty of our game is that there is no real answer, like beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, the criteria a great try also depends on individual preferences and prejudices.

Huw mun, this is blashpemy. Gareth Edwards scored NOT Phil Bennett. Mams and dads the length of wales recite Cliff Morgan's commentary of this game to the babys at night. think the context has a lot to do with this try's greatness. Lions had won for the first time in 1971 against AB led by Colin Meads himself (still apparently greatest ever AB). In 73 they had come over and wonagainst all three home nations and ireland. The BAabaas match was therefore THE match of the tour that was going to settle whether 71 was an aberration.

A corrected version might read:

#10 (Phil Bennett) BarBar eludes black 6 alistair Scowan? then Kirkpatrick, black #12 misses tackle (Byan williams), 2 side steps and pass to support player (JPR Williams). Pass 1
#14 Black high tackle on support player who offloads. Pass 2 (Pullin England hooker)
BarBar pass 3 John Dawes
BarBar draw and pass (Black attempted intercept). Pass 4 tom David (soon to go north to rugby league)

The other thing is that in the move JPR takes two coathanger tackles and the ref doesn't even blow. different times
Barbar offload. Pass 5 to Derrick Quinnell (Father of guy who lost his eye)
BarBar pass to #9 who popped up from nowhere. Pass 6 (probably
Black missed tackle - BarBar#9 gareth (for it is he!) scores.

What is incredible in that match is just how many AB legends were playing and how despite the 'dramatic start' they nearly came back. Actually think there s a better try in second half (think it is by Duckham of Engl*nd or maybe JPR) when ever player touches the ball. It is on youtube but only the second half of it.

S'funny to see JPR taken out with two coat hanger tackles in one move and the re not bat an eylid

he reckons the most spectacular try he can recall is the effort by Yoshihito Yoshida (Japan) in the second test match All Blacks vs World XV at Athletic Park Wellington 1992.

According to my google research
"The first one was a Japanese man diving in mid flight catching the ball and doting down Yoshihito Yoshida that was in the second test match All Blacks vs a World XV. As good as any try scored or created by David Campese, Rugby World Cup Semi Final"
"I think the Japanese player was Yoshihito Yoshida. Can't find a youtube link though.
If the comment above about You Tube is correct - I couldn't find it, Does anyone out there in Gaggerland have the footage of the Yoshida try that they could post, or a link to where we can find footage of that try?

I do remember this try as being a cracker....and have never found any footage of it.....good luck!

Try from the end of the world. It is the other one mentioned along with Edwards beaut from the 73 Baa Baas game as best of all time.

The Jonah Lomu try against England when he did a maori sidetep to beat Mike Catt is etched forever. Heard he was out of hospital, any more news?

Great try. Thanks for posting the footage. That would be a very special moment for a Japanese winger to score against the Darkness.

Here are some contribution from Ireland over the last couple of years:

Great individual effort from Craig Gilroy for Ulster against Munster in the HEC

That flick by Zebo in the lead up to Healy's try vs Wales in this years' 6Ns

Great interplay from Leinster last year. A move who's foundations were laid a few year previously by a certain Mr Cheika.

a brutal brush off by Stephen Ferris against the Scarlets. For all the talk about who missed out on the Lions this guy being injured is by far the biggest miss for this Lions squad.
