from the bbc:

Australia will be without star winger Drew Mitchell at the World Cup after the 27-year-old dislocated an ankle and broke a bone in his leg on Saturday.

"He [Mitchell] will be gone for the year," Waratahs coach Chris Hickey revealed after his team's 19-15 defeat.

So Digby and ? on the wings

Feel sorry for Schmoo missing his chance this at Test rugby this year.

Would have been one of the first picked in the side. Hope he can come back okay for next season.

After so many years unbeaten to the Reds i'd started to forget why its called festival of hate. Now i remember. Im also a little dissapointed in Scotty Higganbotham and IMO that was a deliberate block.... having said that i wouldn't usually give a shit as blocking occurs all the time, but i just feel bad for Drew. I would guess that JOC (James O'Connor) is the next best candidate for the Wing spot, although id personally like to see him at 12. In which case my wingers would be Diggers and probably Turner because like drew he has got a good kicking game and steady players are more preferred in a world cup year. Turners form isn't great but i dont think he has been provided with much decent ball this year, bit like AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper).

It would explain why Dean Mumm was so fired up at Higginbum in that scuffle. I've never seen Dean so angry.

Morahan for wing, has the right attributes. Unlucky for Drew was in career best form and this could have been the year for him to showcase himself as a top class winger.

My mate did something quite similar playing league - dislocated ankle and a break in the tibia right near the bottom. The dislocation wasn't the problem really, it's the break. He had a plate put in with lots of screws and then had to have surgery at a later date to take that out. Bottom line he was back playing about 12 months later and it took another 6 months to regain his speed, step etc. But he got back and is now as good as he was before. Given Mitchells a pro athlete and will have hyperbaric chambers and physio every day etc and all the latest and greateast techniques/ideas/treatments... it might shave 6 months off. But that still will see him out till well after the WC I fear.

I missed most of the second half so I didn't see the incident...

Huge blow for the Wallabies...

So, what's the consensus on the cause of the injury... did Higginbotham trip him?

It was stock standard deliberate blocking, followed by a tragic accident. It might highlight to the refs that blocking has gone too far and needs to be reined in.

Like we all said on the Drew thread, he has become a world-class winger - always broke the line wherever he was on the field. He had also developed a fantastic combination with Beale, who will have to find that spark with someone else.

Can we get a Get Well Soon card to the bloke - he really had become a favourite of the forum, I think.

He showcased himself as a top class winger in his first season of test rugby. Just unfortunate he won't be able to do it at a World Cup as a first choice player.

When you dislocate an ankle, it will invariably fracture the distal tibia as the ligamentous attachments between the tibia and fibula there are so strong, as are those to the ankle - the bone is torn off as the two separate. Unfortunately, sometimes this means a fracture of the fibula higher up also due to the forces involved.
He'll do well to be back mid-season next year.
Gutted for him, the Waratahs and the Wallabies.

not sure how deliberate it was since his back was turned to the advancing Mitchell, unless he has eyes in the back of his head? It just seemed very innocuous and as you say tragic.

A friend of mine did the tib+fib+dislocation hat-trick in a work accident last November. We went to the pub last night to watch the Reds–Tahs game — the first time she's left the house without a crutch or walking stick. I made her look away when the camera was on Mitchell; she didn't need to relive it.

Fractures heal readily; it's the trauma of the dislocation that leaves the joint seized up and hyper-sensitive. Without a freak recovery I expect Mitchell will still be hobbling come summertime.
