Or …. Boom tish…… The Melbourne Brumbies form! Reduce a team…. Keep one in the sporting capital of Australia and solve the money issue of two struggling franchises…. Pick the best players … the rest go either overseas or back to club footy?
Dropping a side will reduce the TV revenue by more then 20% for content, will open up Sanzar and NZFU lawsuit as RA have agreed to 5 teams until 2030.

The boom tish is supposed to come in at the end of the joke...

Yes… no easy answer…. AFL is hard to beat as a spectacle and crowd favourite down there…

You have to wonder what good it is being the toffs sport of choice if they aren't even willing to lose hundreds of millions of dollars propping up an unsupported team/comp.

They sit on the boards of failing companies. Employ CEOs who run the joint into the ground for big bonuses. Give their mates cushy jobs.

There's always a government bailout around the corner.

Yes…. true… but if AFL is a million times more exciting and tribal based, getting the 0.5% as you say is not easy. I’m a rugby man and Tahs supporter but friends in Melbourne aren’t interested in rugby… even when I took them out when I went down to last years Super round in Melbourne… they just didn’t think it was any good…
Id second this.
I could rarely find someone to go to a rebels game with. Occasionally the wallabies games an afl friend would be interested in going to.
I don’t know if I buy the tribal element. It is state by state so there’s tribalism there and Brumbies etc have been around 25 years. That’s rivalry time frame.

rebels are hard. I also found that the season is way too short and it broke for tests. How do you expect to generate fans with 8 games - you take a trip and you miss 25% of the home games.
Then the competition breaks for what 4 weeks? It’s stupid frankly.
The season should provide 10-12 home games and the only break should be a bye week for each team.
Play each team in your conference twice and each nz team conference twice.
Full home and away season that goes
Non stop.
I should be able to watch the crusaders play every year
That’s 11 home games - same as afl etc.

Reality is they can’t afford to support women’s teams as well right now. Game isn’t strong enough

I agree with everything except for the part about women's game, you will find that is running at even because of the amount of Money the government is contributing to women's sport.

You should read "Game of Mates' it details all the inside stories about how they do it and mentions some names. It is very ugly.

The season is way to short to grow the game

Sir Arthur Higgins I attend a lot of sports - Super Rugby, NRL, AFL, Netball and Basketball. Funnily enough Super Rugby is actually the sport I go to with the most people. (I am obviously the exception to the rule).

One of the few. I never miss a home game

This isn’t true.
Stan ia a subscription business that doesn’t depend on ad revenue, which means the volume of content isn’t actually relevant. What matters is retaining existing customers and acquiring new customers.
If the Rebels drop out it’s unlikely that 20% of the ‘rugby’ subscribers will cancel. Some will - whatever this churn is will be the amount Stan cares. Of course, this loss will be weighted against the reduced cost in production costs.

Other than the govt funding, it’s very unlikely that the Rebel’s exit will come with a financial cost to RA.

It seems like if the Victorian government wanted to find the Rebels they would do it by giving money to the Rebels, not RA.
lol, not even sure why I am dignifying this with a response.

But the same article that said they were going into VA also said they were close to a 50m deal to for the WC final and Semis. It said that was contingent on the Rebels.

there’s a free to air tv deal you are totally ignoring.

The tv contract would have to be reworked
