Melbourne Rebels 2024

Tyler Campbell at Bond could be a good pickup as a playmaking utility given the experience you've otherwise locked in. He's had some injury trouble in the past but is having a cracking season at the moment orchestrating much of Bond's current success. He's played 10, 12, 13 and 15, and has experience with Waikiato over in the NPC, so wouldn't be coming in as a novice.

Daugunu coming in is a great pick up as he was looking good in the centres - I think Proctor (if true) we'll be well covered there now with Ili, Vaihu, Feleuai, Ripley, Naea and Wings Daugunu, Pincus, Kellaway, Anderson, Lancaster

A lock and scrum half and we'll have amazing depth across all positions.

The best signing the Rebels have made in our history is Nick Stiles, amazing recruitment and retention.

I'm confident Mason Gordon will be up to Super Rugby at some point next year off the bench. Don't want to judge him off the first U20s game of the WC as they all looked pretty busted for 60mins.

Also, last year Carter looked pretty rank at 10 in the U20s and his development has been pretty rapid to now be in the Wallabies squad. The only thing that may slow Mason down is the shift to 15 even though I think its a good decision long term for him and the Rebels.

Lancaster looks every bit a Super Rugby Winger and I'm excited to see him get a run at some stage. Daugunu at 13 can be what the Rebels need at times. Bit of a rough diamond but he brings a point of difference to the position and I'd want Kellaway off his hip all the time for those broken tackle moments.

9 is the position I'd be looking for. Even at 10 the Rebels have Joey Fowler in the system who you'll be able to see in the U18s games later in the season. Good young prospect but probably another year off at least.

I believe Carter never played a minute of Aus u20. He was selected in aus u18 schoolboys but due to his u20 eligibility being during Covid and the fact he missed out to will Harrison/Ben Donaldson his development has come with playing club rugby and practicing with super rugby teams.

Does Proctor play 12? Daugunu's form at 13 for the Reds at the end of the season was phenomenal and I'm really keen to see if he can continue in that position next year. A backline of Lourwens at 9, C Gordon at 10, Lancaster and Anderson at 11 and 14, Proctor and Daugunu at 12 and 13 with Kellaway at 15 is a really solid backline. Backed up by Tuttle, M Gordon and one of the Vaihu brothers at on the bench.

With Sorovi released, we must be signing a new 9, or at least promoting one. Are there any 9s in our academy?

Wouldn't that be a potential pick up. Did play School Boy Rugby at Oakhill.

Signed through 2025 with the Storm currently on 800k. You want to pay 1m for a guy who is currently busted?

Went and watched the most recent Wests game to see how Glen Vaihu is going. He played at fullback interestingly. He was fine, not a dominant performance but ran well, he dropped a catch cold though.

Mafi played for GPS and I wasn't impressed with him at all, not exceptional enough for a player who should be on the edge of Wallabies. A couple misthrows and was contained around the park in defense and attack.

Who caught my eye more was Angelo Smith, who was great. He's only 22 years old and he plays with some real size. Got a couple lineout steals too. I think he'll be a great bench option for 2024 and hopefully a starter by '25. Didn't realise how recently he'd come from Fiji too, think this is only his third year here? Maybe 4th? Either way, excited to see him progress.

Any other qpr talent catch your eye from that game?

Zac Hough been playing really good rugby lately. He’s been playing like a guy who got snubbed from a representative team who wants to prove his haters wrong.

His try from 22 metre out was pretty impressive. Saw the gap, pinned his ears back and ran for the try line

Stop it :)

“The Melbourne Rebels can also reveal there are more exciting announcements to come as our Club looks to round out our 2024 Super Rugby Pacific squad”
I wouldn't get "too" excited, this to me reads as "we're probably done with capped internationals".

Today’s announcement caps an exciting few months for the Rebels, following the recent signings of Wallabies' trio Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Filipo Daugunu and Taniela Tupou, and Australian Sevens and Junior Wallabies star Darby Lancaster.

Doesn't mean there's not a lot of good uncontracted options floating around.
