Interested in getting some of your thoughts about this: http://www.rebel-army.com/archives/558

I tried to have it posted to various categories over at The Roar, and failed. So I ended up with a mostly one sided Aussie Rules pro discussion, obviously a hard sell.

With three large stadia already in Melbourne it is a hard ask to invest further large Capital amounts into a fourth.

The the rectangular stadium will host the round robin games and the finals if they happen would more than likely head to Docklands, but only if the surface is sorted out. If they don't I never want to see a Rugby game there again.

multi-purpose stadiums will always suffer from a retangular sport point of view because of the distance from the playing surface, this is completely unavoidable in a design/construction sense.

Unless the Vic Govt and the AFL are willing to consign Docklands Stadium to the scrap heap(which is unlikely), then there will not be a new multipurpose stadium in Melbourne for another 15 years at least. A expanded AAMI park is the only realistic step forward for retangular sports in Victoria in the next 10 years, at 30'000 it is to large to justify another larger 50'000 stadium.

Not really, if you look at the design for this proposed Perth Stadium it's much closer on every level for spectators, then even ANZ stadium for example.

Brumby has stated he wants to build a 40,000 capacity stadium in the E-gate precinct.

I can't see it happening. Between AAMI Park and Etihad, we are more than covered for rectangular fields, even if Etihad isn't ideal. Also can't see Brumby lasting long enough to get E-Gate up and running. I always thought that E-Gate was planned as a smaller 30,000-ish size stadium predominately for the less well supported AFL sides to play against interstate (sorry non-Victorian in AFL speak) clubs at. Even E-Gate would be a waste of money compared to redeveloping Visy Park.

Yes your right stoff, E-Gate has always been planned as a AFL boutique stadium which would be retrofitted for the FIFA World Cup due to the stoush with Etihad stadium.

and its cost is also slated at $1.1billion, its completely economically unfeasible to think that a another multipurpose stadium will be built in Melbourne any time soon

My point exactly, if they're going to build another stadium, why not make it multipurpose? Considering a) The MRS roof can't be upgraded b) The AFL will take control of Docklands in 2025

because of cost....

The state government intends to make it a boutique stadium(ie 25'000), doesnt make sense to make a 25'000 stadium multi-purpose because the capacity of AAMI is 30'000. There is no point making it a 50'000 stadium because they already have Docklands and there is no need to make it any bigger then that because they already have the MCG.

Retangular sports in Melbourne have a 30'000 purpose built stadium already, if they were going to go bigger they would be looking at a 50-60'000 to justify the costs.. Yet Docklands already fits this category, after that there is absolutely no need to go any larger then 55'000 in Melbourne.
