Just saw a story on Planet Rugby that Matt Dunning has a serious spinal injury and his contract with Biarittz has been terminated by mutual consent.

Not sure what the nature of the injury is. Hopefully it will be rectified with surgery and rehab but at 33 (and a prop with spinal problems) the chances of him getting back into top flight rugby must be nearly zero.

Never a fan of Dunning in Gold, but he is a nice guy and has done his bit for the cause. All the best to him in the future.

He gave us plenty to cheer about at a time when we needed it. Always seemed keen and never stopped trying. Good luck to him, let's hope this has a happy ending.

News courtesy of Rugby Heaven:

Former Wallabies and Waratahs prop Matt Dunning is a chance of returning to the NSW side and adding to his 99 caps for the state after he was forced to withdraw from his contract with French side Biarritz.

Dunning has returned to Sydney to undergo neck surgery and is undergoing rehabilitation at Waratahs HQ.

The Herald understands the injury isn't career-threatening and Waratahs sources suggest the 32-year-old could be of interest if talks with Biarritz breakdown.

Would he get much of a run at the Tahs? Fatcat and Kepu would surely keep the run-on spots so I guess he would maaayybeee replace Baxter as a reserve.

Having said that, good on him if he can overcome the injury and get back to playing form.

I would prefer to see Tilse & Ryan get time, they need it, they were spanked by Manly on the Weekend

Fully fit he would be a good option to have; Robinson and Kepu are a mighty starting front row with TPN but Ryan is only promising and Tilse still not really proven despite his five years in the squad. Tucky can play both sides which delivers flexibility. But in the new 30+5 rookie contract system he's unlikely to get a full contract because of players already contracted and the need to strengthen other areas across the park.

Which brings us back to the lunacy of 30 contracts for a Super season. Two front rowers get injured and we are off to Shute for replacement back-ups with the person called up having next to no experience in a Super squad. Three front rowers get injured and we will end up starting a Shute Shield prop with another on the bench. Given the Tah injury experience this year that is not an unlikely scenario. This is what happens when the accountants (JO'N) run the business. Arbitrary limits on reserves to save money without any thought for the possible ramifications.

If the Tahs 2011 injury run continues into 2012, then he would be a handy backup. He wouldn't dislodge Keps and Fat Cat though.
