Look like the Rebels will get their first win in week 1 over the Tahs. ::)

I wonder if Kraplan can manage to influence the result in week one to protect his averages.

Paarl,

You'd be obsessed too if his record with the Stormers was 15 losses, 1 win.

In the first three weeks the Tahs play two of the most important games of the season, at home against the Reds and away against the Crusaders. Those two blockbuster games could decide the Tahs season. Against the Reds we have Bryce Lawrence who makes more wrong decisions in a night than most referees make in a month. At least he tends to be even-handed with his mistakes, but its likely to be a poor game under his control due to his inconsistency. Against the Crusaders we have Chris Pollock, who tends to favour the home town and is definitely not top notch. These two games should have had the top rated S14 referees - Mark Lawrence, Stu Dickenson or Craig Joubert. Instead we get Mark Lawrence in week 1 when a lesser referee would have been appropriate and Dickenson and Joubert are elsewhere in weeks 2 & 3.

But if the Tahs have got it bad, its worse for the Brumbies. They have got Kaplan for the first two weeks. Now Kaplan hates the Brumbies almost as much as he hates the Tahs, but the Brumbies have him for two straight games, weeks 1 & 2. The panel must have known that, but still went ahead with the appointment. Then in week 4 there's another blockbuster game against the Crusaders and they get a Kiwi rookie, Garratt Williamson. All three assistant referees are Kiwis. That's one game the Crusaders can bank without even turning up.

Whoever is making the appointments decisions must have the sensitivity of a brick. The key games, and we all know which ones they are, should get the top referees because they have the potential to alter the finals make-up. The sooner someone sees sense and returns to neutral referees and picks top referees for key games the better.

Boet dont let the reffing get to you before the season starts. These players have to learn to adabt to any ref and just have to play the way they ref more so with the way specially grey areas like the breakdowns is these days. Its do or die stuff and Kaplan is refreshed and reconditioned, he'll give you a top performance.

There will probably be changes for form and injury, so let's wait and see who ends up on the key games. Already Steve Walsh is out injured for the first month.

I will not say it about any other ref. now or past but Kaplan is a waste of space. Many of the games he officiated in were so badly officiated many may well feel he intentionally was biased. His record with the Tahs certainly supports that view especially when you compare their record under any other ref. including his fellow SA officials.

Problem is the way you feel wont make a diffirense. Try next time to look somewhere else when you are losing, maybe get to the controlled cause.

You know, I'm torn on this issue. On the one hand, I do genuinely believe that Kaplan is biased against Australia in a way that he probably doesn't even realise, and also that Bryce Lawrence is not fit to ref under 7s.

On the other hand, I hate it when every post-match discussion becomes a rant about the ref. We used to have a Referee discussion board - where we could bitch about refs and argue the laws, keeping the game thread free of moaning. Maybe that's the answer? Dunno.

Why bother turning up? What bullshit.

Me too. Problem is that its not so much the referees themselves but who is getting appointed where. There is just no sensitivity to the importance of a particular game, nor to a referee's history with particular teams. I'll try to be less negative but they really do make it tough.

Anybody know if their are some good young refs kicking around in your area that could be developed for higher honors (would love to hear your thoughts on this Lee Grant and your take on SA Paarl). We have a young fella in Darwin Jacob Barlow who is completely wasted up here. He is an amaizing talent and is deffinatly good enough for bigger things. He ran the touch for the Brumbies vs Reds trial last week and reffed the curtin raiser so hopefully he got the exposure for those at the ARU to stand up and take notice.

Agree Hawko, why put people in positions where their reputation is jeopardised because of perceptions.

That is not the case for me with Kaplan, as he never has the same performance issues with teams other than the Tahs.

Not in my area but I have a high regard for SAffer Stuart Berry. He's already been on the scene for a while but I think he'll be an international ref in big matches before very long.

Locally I think Angus Gardner is very good.

Then Jacob needs to move to Brisbane or Sydney because you need to referee the best standard of rugby in the country if you want to be an international referee and Brisbane and Sydney are where the best rugby is. Perhaps the Canberra comp is good enough but you are a long shot from there. You just can't make it as a referee from anywhere else in Australia.
