Received an ARU media alert:
ARU MEDIA ALERT – 2013 BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS TOUR SCHEDULE TO BE UNVEILED


Melbourne Media is invited to attend the unveiling of the 2013 British and Irish Lions Tour Schedule on MONDAY, 28 NOVEMBER.

The announcement will take place at Goschs Paddock 1A (immediately east of and parallel to AAMI Park) at 1.30pm. Parking available via AAMI Park Entrance F off Olympic Boulevard, Melbourne.

There will be a number of VIP guests in attendance including ARU Managing Director and CEO JOHN O’NEILL and Qantas Wallabies star QUADE COOPER.

The Lions Tour – undertaken every four years to either Australia, New Zealand or South Africa – is considered the game’s biggest event behind the Rugby World Cup.

Australia last hosted a Lions Tour in 2001.

Television crews are advised to attend 15 minutes earlier for set up. A wet weather contingency has been arranged and will be relayed to media if required.

Interesting they're doing it down here, which leads me to suggest 1 or 2 things
1: Rebels vs Lions tour match (1st game of tour)
2: Wallabies vs Lions at AAMI Park (highly doubtful)

It's where Collingflogs train, enough said.

Not really, it's a big parkland area, next to AAMI. Features a couple of ovals.

Melbourne Victory/Melbourne Storm/Collingwood/Melbourne Demons all train there.

Is it that doubtful? One in Sydney, one in Brisbane, and one in either Melbourne or Perth (or maybe two in Sydney). I would have thought Melbourne might have been the front-runner for that.

It's going to be Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney (in that order). It's already confirmed eg. for the tour groups.

The highly doubtful remark is that it'll be at Etihad, like in 01.

Etihad is already locked in from what I've been told.

The MCG will never get a game again, from what the ARU told me. Unless I had the Army pressure them.

Ah, right.

I get really jealous when I think about Melbourne's stadium set-up. I flew over for the Boxing Day test last year, and the MCG absolutely blew my mind. Phenomenal stadium, right in the heart of the city - what I'd give for that.

MCG will never be an option again because the MCC has too much say on ticket allocation. Their members area takes up too much seats in the stadium and won't budge on opening them to the public even if it doesn't sell out. i'm fairly sure those tickets do not contribute to revenue for the aru. Docklands is a dump of a ground (AFL demands towards its design make it impossible to bring the seats in) but the ARU will maximise revenue out of that venue unless AAMI park would subsidise the loss of 20 000 tickets if it went there (which will never happen)

The MCC owns the stadium, their members have paid for the right to not show up. I don't like it personally (as an MCC member) but them's the breaks. The ARU would get a flat payment from the MCC for the attendance in the Reserve.

Keep in mind, the same thing happens (to a greater relative degree I'd say) in the Medallion Club at Etihad.
