Lions Tour 2025

Let’s put the captain of the consistently underwhelming Oz SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) (Super Rugby Pacific) team as our national captain. That’ll go well. The bloke knows what it takes to win.

Oh wait.
Considering none of our teams have won anything in 20 years I’d say none of our players know how to win so that’s a moot point

ditto with our teams being underwhelming

Besides 2011 and 2014?
I do agree that none really have a mortgage on "how to win" though, given the sparse wins over all of Super Rugby.
I'm a bit "meh" about Gordon being captain, although he probably is the front-runner at 9, which probably speaks more to the flaws most of our 9s have.
The realistic number of players in the Wallaby mix who could be captain by virtue of their position is pretty small.
Personally I wouldn't be surprised with Gordon, McReight or Wilson. AAAAAAA maybe too.

I mean if we want to get pedantic - the Brumbies won Super Rugby AU in 2020 (Tahs came last and didn’t win a game) and the Reds won Super Rugby AU in 2021 (Tahs came second last).

Tahs also then came stone cold last in Super Rugby Trans Tasman 2021 and SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) 2024. That little period is probably the most underwhelming of underwhelming you can be in terms of Australian teams.

Guess who was Tahs captain from 2021 onwards.

It's interesting in terms of how Tate and White fit. Oh, and Lonergan.

But I think that Gordon has shown plenty of leadership qualities in Super side that proved to be lacklustre. I'm not bothered by the idea. I'd have been thinking McReight, Wilson. AAA maybe. Could have chosen Wright or Ikitau. Yeah, drawing straws. More about looking at experience with the added "quite likely to be chosen in the XV".

I'd have gone Wilson, but I have Reds tinted glasses. Gordon would be a fine choice.

Considering an Australian team kinda had to win Super Rugby AU, I think we can strike that from the record
Pinning the Waratahs dark period on Jake Gordon seems a bit misplaced considering the Shambolic state it was in at the time

Do Harry Wilson’s QF losses make him a winner?

You’re a peanut.

I wonder how many posters have to put you on ignore until the forum actually bans you.

I reckon this just shows how little Schmidt worries about any of this stuff, and probably how minor he thinks the role of test captain is, especially compared to most of us mugs.

They are all quite good, but none of the 9s are "really good", which is an issue. I'm guessing it will be Gordon and McDermott, but the others have their merits too. I miss the old days when most of the team picked itself.

Agreed. Halfback has been our Achilles heel for ages.

I'm not sure there is a huge correlation between provincial results and international results based on the captain, especially since several players effectively captain a team in any match with injuries / subs / cards taken into account. Not to mention the quality or otherwise of the rest of the provincial team.
I think what is more important is the quality of the leadership group. True, the captain is a big part of that.
There is a lot of flux in the team (and coaches) in recent times, over which the Wallabies have been pretty inconsistent, and I think that impacts more than who is captain.
Eales was a great captain, but he had a great, and very consistent, team around hime with some very experienced generational players. I think any of 4-5 players could have captained that team with good effect given that situation ( and before Phil Clinton loses his rag at some slight against a Queenslander, no, I would not have swapped him for anyone ;) ).
Hence, I think any of the above names I stated earlier would seem to be a decent option, in no particular order.
