Lions Tour 2025

KOB1987

John Eales (66)
Interesting reading all these comments. It’s essentially going to be a team comprised of players from Aus A and NZ A, and as we (Aus) are hosting the Lions it’s not going to be stacked with Kiwis. My best guess is it will be 50/50.

I can’t see many turning down the opportunity to play in it and it will be a great tour match.

Yep why a Baabaas team KOB,which would be great and seems perhaps there not much in it, only been mentioned for about 30 seconds at end of meeting other day.

The game won’t clash with the ABs as the Aus v Lions tests will be on those weeks. I presume this game is planned post the 3 game series, so no clash in fixtures.

I’m with others who’d like a baabaas type selection. Pick exciting players who can showcase that the game is more than box kicks, scrum resets and rolling mauls. Maybe get a few Pacific Islanders in there too? It probably won’t become a thing where NZ does the same when the Lions tour there as they have the Maori team as their fourth test and more teams that can be competitive.

just pick kiwi's who play in europe lol

I swear if Rugby wasn't so intrinsically linked to NZ cultural identity then the likes of Robinson and the rest of his NZ Rugby cohort would be even more exposed for their lack of vision and ambition as administrators/business managers then they already have been. I would call their perspective as the quintessential 'big fish in a small pond' mentality if in reality it wasn't more akin to a 'big fish in a small paddle'. Their first reaction is 'but what about the ABs' instead of 'how can we work with our (supposed) partners to make this not only viable but successful for both parties' which as you suggest could be done by Kiwi's playing overseas or as others have suggested making it more BaaBaa-esque and involving PI players as well.

I would bloody hope their first reaction is what about the ABs/NZ rugby WCR, it's what they are voted on board to do, same as RA board should be worried about Aus rugby first and foremost! And perhaps that works both ways, Hamish first thing seems I got an idea, so everyone will full into line with us? I mean the Wallaby coach is suggesting caution and there other things to work on. Kind of wonder how many stakeholders have been spoken to about it before going to media, you know like Lions board?
There is just not RA and NZR even to think of.

It wouldn't be a fourth test. If you kept the tour schedule the exact same as last time you could replace the Combined Country game with it and surely rake in a big chunk more money from the game.

It would be a higher value game for ticket sales and broadcast rights than everything expect the three test matches. You'd be shifting your least value game to being fourth most valuable.
It could be classified as a Test if the team is test strength. Its a combination of nations just like the Lions.

My guess is that if this match is played it is early-ish in the tour and no attempt is made to have it classified as a test match.

Yep and be recognised by WR (World Rugby) as a test team I think.

Wouldn’t the issue be 30 or so Wallabies and All Blacks would already be in camp

I'm just going on the basis that the three tests will presumably be the last three matches on the tour as they have always been and those are in the international window.

If the Aus/NZ game happens I'm assuming it will be early in the tour with some players taken out of the two squads.

I don't see how it would fit with anyone's schedules and international windows doing it at the end of the tour.

Yeah agree with that as the schedule but I can't see both unions wanting to release players for that? Risk of injuries etc. They already don't play for their clubs when they play the Lions.

I think it could only work with guys from outside the current squads (and they could use it to push for inclusion when injuries undoubtedly occur).

Would still be a much stronger side than any club side (on paper - at least) or country side.

The Lions arent a test team, are they?

Or is it just that the Lions matches dont affect rankings.
I really not sure what the story is with Lions, I think they can get a Lions cap, but don't think it counts as a test one? And think I read they don't affect rankings for that reason. They only play 3 countries so can't really count in test rankings etc.
