he ran the ball straight into contact half a dozen times on Saturday night, and held the ball to take the tackle on most occasions rather then going for the cheeky offload..

Hardly pathethic or cowardice

how do you teach desire?

Teach really isn't the right word; motivate? Inspire? It's more complicated than simply pumping someone up into a frenzy.

I think 50% of Cooper's misses come from lack of commitment, 50% from poor technique. If he can eliminate the two every time he'll be the defender he needs to be.

I don't understand why his defence can't improve. Tackling is a skill like anything else in the game and Quade has plenty of skill. He should be able to learn and improve.

Maybe they just need to incentivise him. Just say to him that each time he misses a tackle at training, Vickers is going to counter ruck the crap out of him.

He'll learn quickly.

Gilbert learned. He was just as bad as Quade and now he's a machine.

Quade Cooper should have been suspended - it was a deliberate knee to Richie McCaw's head.

Watching in real time on saturday I was thinking that both Quade and Beale were having "hom-hum" nights but after a second viewing of the game, Quade had a much better game than I first thought, and as per TOCC I was impressed with his running into contact but also his kicking game and decision making. On the other hand, the second viewing confirms Beale had an off night in attack but was very good in defense. IMO, there is certainly no cause for alarm on their 2011 test form.

The worst element of quade's play isn't his tackling but his work at the breakdown. The rest of the backline isn't much better.

One of my old coaches use line the forwards up against the backs in the 5 metre channel next to the sideline and let the forward belt the backs until they could hold their own at the breakdown. One night we were there nearly an hour after all the the other teams had left before they got any sort of parity. Was great fun.

Completely disagree. McCabe and Angaa were effective at the breakdown, and while Cooper isn't a breakdown master he does enough to make little opportunities for when the cavalry arrive.

Angaa had one of the clear outs of the game for mine at the 16:40 mark, right after Samo's run. (Mind you, it was ridiculously illegal)

Beale's game has been disrupted by Cooper's move to fullback in defence. He's not been as effective this season as a result.

I just re-watched the game from the weekend and I thought Quade Cooper was exceptional.

I think Kurtley struggled a bit with his combinations in the back 3 and linking with his centres. But showed glimpses.

I would imagine this has been posted before but someone just sent it to me in an email. Shows the talent Beale possesses in spades.

Fa'aingaa is only bettered by Pocock at the breakdown as far as ability to make a tackle, get back to his feet and either pressure the breakdown or fan out in defense. I think one clean out I saw he completely smashed a AB forward off the ball.

Is Cooper always defending at fullback or sometimes on the wing? Seems that he does take quite a few kicks, but so does Beale.
