AUCKLAND: Australian rugby fans claim they have been spat on and abused by New Zealanders at the World Cup.
Phil Dunne, a Sydney man who flew into Auckland with his wife last weekend, told the New Zealand Herald a "hate vibe" had become entrenched in the psyche of many New Zealanders.

"Some of the charming exchanges involved sexual comments about my wife, instructions on how we could all f--- off back to Australia and even included one charming bloke attempting to spit on us," Dunne said.
"I think the hate vibe given off by New Zealanders towards us is so entrenched at this World Cup that most Kiwis don't even realise how hostile they actually are."
The story set off debate on talkback radio.
Radio Sport host Miles Davis said he had observed the same "vitriolic" hatred directed towards Australians in other cities.
"I saw it in Dunedin and I have got to say it's not a pleasant side of the New Zealand rugby fan," he said.
Another supporter told the Herald there were patches of real meanness at Eden Park during the Australian game against Ireland.
"A Kiwi, dressed in Irish green, shouted to a group of Australian fans, 'It's not mardi gras you f---ing poofters'," the unnamed fan said.
Radio Sport listeners said the abuse was not confined to Australian rugby supporters or to the World Cup.
Davis heard from two listeners who said they were abused and had beer tipped on them for supporting Australian NRL teams.
"I no longer go to (Warriors' home ground) Mount Smart because I've been spat on, had beer spilled on me, I was almost run over in the car park," listener Brian sent via text message to Radio Sport.
A listener named as Alex said his wife was abused for supporting the Springboks.
"There's a fair amount of it out there and it's not pleasant," Davis said.
"But anyway a lot of people think 'harden up' - it goes on elsewhere in the world so it makes it right here."

Anyone been subject to abuse?

I've had the healthy banter with Kiwis (eg. customs and Subway), however walking down Queen St on Saturday night was pretty bad.

I must say I am getting a little tired of some of the serious abuse Ive been copping from some. I don't mind healthy banter, it goes both ways - but there is no excuse for any fan from any country to get personal .

Someone commented on one of my blog posts (can't remember who) that after the Irish game they were pushed down a set of stairs and now have to spend the rest of their NZ trip on crutches. Lovely.

Of course there are bad eggs everywhere, but I have detected a bit more spite around the place (various online fora). Were we this bad when the RWC was in Oz?

Of course there no excuse for it, I a kiwi and I have said before I have seen exactly same thing here, but I not sure why it happens. I was once given a tshirt saying I support ABs and anyone playing Wallabies, I threw it away, I just support the All Blacks, actually and daughter in NZ was saying most her and most mates would prefer to see Wallabies win WC if ABs don't. Mind you this very website perhaps shows it not just a few kiwis being anti Australian, and Aus rugby supporters would seem to be somewhat similar in outlook.

No. Oz rugby fans went out of their way to make all overseas visitors welcome. I had a very pleasant evening at Manly Oval with my (then) 12 year old son watching the final on a big screen with hundreds of Pommy backpackers, it was a great night for all. As was the rest of RWC2003. We also had an enjoyable afternoon watching Scotland play Fiji at the SFS; at that match the Australian spectators were extremely generous to both sets of supporters.

As someone with a Kiwi grandmother I'm horrified to read stories of New Zealanders abusing Australians. And saddened. What's caused this anti-Australian behaviour? It's going to make 2015 at Gallipoli a bit difficult.

I was there on the weekend and thought the Kiwis were awesome hosts. Loads of friendly banter and -- after the loss -- quite a few "tough break, what happened to you guys" conversations. In fact, most of the guys I was with left talking about coming back soon with our better halves...

After the match there were a few dickhead things said, but nothing that bad. (The Irish chanting "Four more years" were just confusing. They knew it wasn't a knockout game, right?) Mind you, we didn't walk down Queen St or drown our sorrows in any Kiwi-intensive areas.

There is a fair amount of debate going on in the media regards this and whether the friendly banter has gone just a little too far this time.

I wouldn't mind betting a lot of anti anyone spite is related to what is said in forums, the advantage of internet is some tragic like me can come in and discuss rugby with likeminded fans, unfortunately also tends to get some who are perhaps not as keen on the game , but part time fans ,that get quite brave and abusive, and it just sems to explode. I find it amazing the number of people that say look at the Saffas, kiwis, welsh etc etc bitching and being shit sports and then assume that all are same. I used to post in Planet Rugby quite a bit, but the trolling etc just turned it into a schoolkid type thing. That is reason I started coming in here, so I can hopefully discuss games etc with a rugby fans.

My mates ran into an Irish bloke on Friday night, who had been randomly punched in the nose by a group of Kiwis for wearing an Irish jersey in the Auckland CBD.

I was at the Brisbane Bled/Tri match last month and mixed with many Kiwis at before and after match functions. They were cheeky/friendly before the game and good losers afterwards. Hopefully it is only the media blowing up the nastiness.

I was at the RWC final in Sydney and it was the best atmosphere any pom (I spoke to) had experienced at a o'seas match.

The defining difference between Rugby and other contact sports is the coming together after the battle. Let's not throw it away.

The old All Blacks and any team playing Aus thing is strong in them.

Not all, most are great value, I have enjoyed my time there, but there was a feeling at the irish game that everyone was hoping Ireland would get up. no spitting or anything. I did get laughed at afterwards, HAHA Aussie... but I was on my own wearing gold. And I look funny.

Some can be attributed to forum message boards - I think its flow on effect from media articles though from all nations journalists. The "wallabies are arrogant" view couldn't be further from the truth - I haven't seen one player say that any game is going to be easy, nor have you seen them even hint about a possible quarter final against anyone. The players from all nations usually take the "one game at a time" approach, its the headlines that give this perception that a team is arrogant. From a kiwi perspective, the "Lets make Quade Cooper enemy number 1" has been purely a media driven thing.

Agree totally - I have always enjoyed watching rugby with kiwi supporters, have always been light hearted banter before and during the game , as soon as a final whistle goes, the gloves are off and its time to enjoy each others company.

Over the years Ive had some horrendous experiences with English supporters but the true rugby supporters tend to say it is the fair weathered english football supporter that gives them a bad name. After travelling overseas to some sporting events I have seen some horrendous Australian ex pat bogans giving us a bad name, so Ive chalked it up to just a minority of bad supporters from any nation.

I think New Zealand is just upset that the Australian media don't refer to him as Sir Richie. It shows our lack of respect.

I commented on this in the Irish v aus thread.

I don't know if it's on the back of the quade Cooper public enermy stuff, or the fact the all blacks lost in Brisbane. But I was subject to and noticed more than "occasional dickheads" on Saturday night, there was venom and spite and for the most part they seemed to feel pretty proud about it.

It was a huge shame and ruined a great experience.

While I feel I can take it (though shouldn't have to) there was a family of aus fans behind me who's two young daughters had there faces painted who were treated not just to me being sworn at but came in for abuse themselves.

I won't be back to NZ in a hurry after it, nit would I go out of my way for there fans right now. I know it's not all of them, but the numbers that did have left that much of a bad taste.

...And a Quade niggling Richie driven thing.

They just can't get over that can they?

Even in the 'apology' letter which accompanied the SMH article the bloke still gave it a big mention. Apparently when you attack someone 'lying defenseless on the ground' you deserve all the hate they can spew at you. No mention of what Bakkies did to Jimmy Cowan last year though, considering Jimmy was also 'defenseless on the ground'.

Hi all.
You have a few bad cases, but IMO their pretty Isolated.
I was at the Tri-nations match last year in Melbourne with my brother and when we jumped up in celebration of an All black try, a Wallaby supporter puched him in the back of the head and said 'f@#k off back eweland you c@#t'. Yea it was a bad experience but im sure 99% of wallaby supporters are fine. Im not gonna stop goin to games in oz for one incident. It would be lame of me if i did.

It's the sports equivalent of all the character assassination drivel we're treated to in political reportage. It shits me. Report on the games, the fitness of players, the strategy, etc. Do player profiles, by all means, but why play up and promote the one or two ugly things when there are hundreds of better stories to write about?
