Force unleash Rocket for Ballymore blitz

Australian Sevens representative and former Queensland Reds speedster, ‘Rocket’ Rod Davies, will be back in familiar territory on Saturday when he lines up on the wing for the Western Force as they tackle Kagifa Samoa at Ballymore.

Another familiar face returning to his home state for the match is hooker Andrew Ready. After making the switch to join the Western Force in the off-season, Ready has been an important part of the club’s 2019 Showcase Series that has seen them claim the Asia Showcase title, while they are neck and neck with Fijian Latui in the race for the Pacific Series.

Forwards defence key to bringing in Samoan win

The Western Force is preparing for a “bloody” good display of running rugby when it clashes with Kagifa Samoa on Saturday.

In the first Global Rapid Rugby match to be played on the Australian east coast, prop Kieran Longbottom will lead the forward pack in applying targeted pressure to control the Samoan attack.
“They maul a lot, so for us, we need to take that apart. They use that as a weapon and we need to take that away from them,” Longbottom said.
“They have a great forwards play, they have got a lot of big boys and you can see that in the last period of playback at HBF Park where they kept on making metres, which then led to that pretty awesome try.
“If we let them get that momentum up and allow that to roll on then they will be very dangerous. The forwards need to stop that momentum and shut them down as soon as possible.”

Despite winning by 58-points in their last meeting in Perth, Samoa led the statistics for ball possession, general runs and scrum wins, and is expected to bring a much tougher and more polished game on Saturday.
“They got the fundamentals and everything going for them and they can all play bloody good footy,” Longbottom said.
“From what we have seen of Kagifa Samoa from their game against Fiji they looked like a completely different team to the team we played over here.
“It will be a really big test for us there because we can see the improvement they have had in one week, so it will be a real solid effort from our boys to come up on the weekend.”

The former Saracens players believes the new Global Rapid Rugby laws have the potential to “explode” and the experienced 33-year-old has been enjoying the faster game.
“It’s amazing, playing these new rules. The energy is there and there really is the ability for these new rules to go forward and really explode,” Longbottom said.
“Even as a prop I really like playing these new rules. It’s a lot of fun and it’s a lot of fun having to run the ball out of your own territory.”

If only they played it on Sunday when there is no other rugby. I enjoyed the match last week but only the 2nd half and I left work early.

Saturday at 3:30 all the local clubs are playing so local fans probably won't make it and like many others around the country I'll be at my local field supporting, helping, cooking, playing so wont be able to watch on TV.

Timing of the games does the rounds regularly.....

1. The Fijians and Samoans will not play on Sunday.
2. Friday nights and Saturday night clash with the last round of Super Rugby (RA's preference).
3. The clash with local club comps is the least preferred option.

There will be more flexibility with the timing of games when GRR gets going next year.

Seems not only RA doesn't quite get the point on promoting their game, if it was run by them everyone would be yelling about club play at same time, while I understand that maybe some of the Island boys aren't keen on Sunday, I really thought if I was trying to promote it, I would of gone for Friday night, but saying that although I have no interest in it, I hope the game goes well ,and they get decent crowd.

Kagifa Samoa skipper Leon Fukofuka believes his side is ready to deliver their best performance of 2019 and end their campaign on a high by handing the Western Force their first loss of the Pacific Showcase Series.

They both play for Brothers in Brisbane so there's a high likelihood of that they're related in some way or another. Which would also mean he's related to Will. Just looked up his highlights on YouTube. Looks like a hard running, hard tackling centre who can play a bit of loose forward when needed.

Familiar faces in GRR’s east coast debut​

Global Rapid Rugby comes to the Australian east coast for the first time — and at an approved Rugby Australia hour — when the Western Force takes on the Kagifa Samoa side at Ballymore this afternoon.​

​

In order to get permission from RA to stage the series, Andrew Forrest’s GRR were obliged to make a commitment that they would not cut across any of the four Australian Super Rugby matches, so the debut east coast match has been targeted for 3.30pm, well in advance of the evening’s only Super Rugby fixture involving local sides, the Brumbies against the Queensland Reds in Canberra.​

That’s not to say that the match will not impact on Premier Rugby fixtures but with the GRR hiring the ground, that was a trade-off the cash-strapped Queensland Rugby Union was happy to accept.​

​

The GRR format — with clever use of pre-match entertainment, games limited to 70 minutes and the tedious scrum posturing dramatically curtailed — might not be familiar to Queensland fans but chances are they will warm to it quickly. No doubt the same will apply to the free admission.​

​

For Rod Davies, the Force’s dynamic left winger, it will be a long-awaited homecoming. He started out at the Reds in 2009 and was one of the most prominent contributors to their historic Super Rugby title in 2011, on the back of which he was selected for his one and only Test, against — funnily enough — Samoa. He scored two tries against Kagifa Samoa off the bench at the end of last month when the Rebels inflicted a 63-5 defeat on the islanders and now that he has been promoted to the starting side, he will be hoping to at least emulate that this afternoon.​

​

Another familiar face returning to his home state is reserve hooker Andrew Ready, one of the players let go by Reds boss Brad Thorn. There was a time when it seemed he could even press for Wallabies status and he will surely be keen to demonstrate to Queenslanders how the move to Perth has benefited him.​

There is nothing at all secret about the Samoans’ other primary weapon. From the days of Brian Lima, known throughout the rugby world as The Chiropractor — because of the way he rearranges the bones of people he tackles — the Samoans have always been renowned for their defence and though the scoreline in the first match suggests it was a cakewalk, for long periods the islanders defended their line courageously.​
