In all attacking metrics he is leading the pack, or thereabouts. He has also only conceded a single penalty.

He's played almost the same number of minutes as Henry Speight, who by all accounts has been excelling in attack this season in a team that has outperformed the Waratahs. His stats are as follows:

Tries: 6 (>Folau)
Running metres: 568 (<Folau)
LB: 12 (>Folau)
TB: 30 (>Folau)
Offload: 4 (<Folau)
Penalties Conceded: 5 (>Folau)

Three metrics go Speights way, three go Folaus. Not much between them.

Thats actually 4 metrics to Speight and 2 to Folau

touché, although i don't think Speight is really the benchmark player to compare to, he has been playing well, but i don't think he is an automatic selection for the Wallabies, he has had opportunities in the past and has failed to grasp them.

Hunt(8 games)/Folau(9 games)
Tries: 3=3
MPG: 71>70
TA: 4>2
LB: 7>5
LBA: 9>3
TB: 23>24
OFF: 17>11
PC: 6>1

DHP(6 games)/Folau(9 games)
Tries: 2<3
MPG: 83>70
TA: 2=2
LB: 4<5
LBA: 6>5
TB: 18<24
OFF: 5>11
PC: 2>1

Reinforces the general consensus that DHP and Hunt are the two inform fullbacks ahead of Folau.. Its a shame that DHP is out injured.

MPG: Meters per game
TA: Try Assist
LB: Line Break
LBA: Line Break Assist
TB: Tackle Bust
Off: Offload
PC: Penalties conceded

Why is Folau being compared with Speight and Savea?

A 13/15 being compared with two wingers makes little sense. Even considering that Folau MAY be picked at wing for the Wallabies there is very little that can be told by comparing these stats.

Fair play - I was just comparing their attacking stats as they were literally the first two players who came to mind who are have been lauded for their attacking prowess this season and before.

DHP / Hunt are better comparisons. Either way, theres not a lot in it.

It is a shame that Folau has only had 3 starts at 15, makes comparisons by stats alone difficult.

I have little doubt Hunt will be able to perform at international level and should probably start 15.

The reality is that an in form Folau is world class. Just like they would with any other world class player the coaching staff will hope to play him into form by surrounding him with best available players in the country. I'd say the worst case scenario for him is the wing, he won't be on the bench and he certainly won't be in the stands. He's a player that isn't great at finding space himself but when he's presented with it he can be outstanding.

If he has a shit test season they'll start reassessing his viability, but not before.

I was nearly going to add that in myself. He's the best in the world under the high ball though too when in form. So it's possible that the number on his back is meaningless, whatever he plays they'll almost certainly drop him back in defence and try to put him in space in attack.

Folau's work under the highball is the single biggest reason to keep him at fullback and is a major attribute of his, and his strength in contact help him remain on his feet until support arrives, but he passes about as much as AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) does and his kick returns pose absolutely no threat to the opposition. Opposition wingers are happy to press up on a kick to Folau because statistically he won't kick back, or if he does it won't find space. Likewise with his passing, on a kick return he won't throw a pass 20m across to a support player, its just not in his skillset.

IMO his two biggest strengths, that it his ability under the highball and strength in contact are equally, if not more applicable on the wing. Watch the NRL highlights wheel of Folau scoring tries from up and under, why wasn't this adopted to rugby union. Lote Tuqiri did it in the 2003 RWC GF over Robinson, and that was about the last time i remember the Wallabies doing it.

No doubt Folau is world class WHEN he plays to his ability. He has not done that for at least 12 months.

No doubt Hunt is in better form than Folau.

No doubt Cheika will pick Folau at 15

I don't fully understand why he's so shit at kick returns. He seems to hesitate and question himself. He's most dangerous in a bit of space running at defenders, where he often beats people he has no right to.

He invariably hesitates into contact, passes it to another (often worse positioned) player or occasionally kicks poorly.

Good Wallaby perhaps, but an average player when compared to Smith, Dagg, Halfpenny and Hogg for example.

Willie Le Roux is the same, good Bok, but with many ills of his own - sort of Quade Cooper-like form-wise without the off-field indiscretions.

We tend to measure within a confined view (how good is the rest of the country in this position?) and we fail to recognise when foreigners are better.

Really all depends whether your team is moving forward on the pitch or not. As Nick Mallet mentioned in studio over the weekend; Cheslin Kolbe, Dyllin Lleyds and the Cheetahs back three are great going forward but they are not so great defending. There needs to be balance.

Same in the pack, you can scavenge all the ball you want but make nothing of it going forward or you can be a great roaming forward but get undone in the trenches.

A problem the Stormers are having as well.

The more the forwards go forward, the better the backs will be. I feel I write this sort of thing at least every fortnight.

Hogg is awesome going forward but rubbish in defense which is why he probably won't be 15 for Lions.

Has Speight learnt how to tackle yet ? A complete turnstyle in defence.
