Smith didn't miss him did he?
Does Cricket ever run on a deficit? The AFL or NRL?
What % is $8M of total turnover? That is the biggest issue for me.

I believe cricket is struggling. Remember their provincial comp runs at a loss, and has for many years. But they are looking at cutting that now and playing more 20/20.

AFL and NRL are a bit different as they are more commercial ventures, more concerned about the product than developing the game. That's probably more accurate for the NRL than AFL. But the AFL doesn't have a national team to support - just their provincial comp and some grass routes stuff.

ARU must fund its national team, the state teams (contribute towards) as well as looking after the development of the game at a grass routes level.

in terms of what has JON done - what was his role in negotiating the new Superugby format? I know a few Kiwis and Saffers on another forum who swear up and down no one in their contries wanted this format as it will hurt Currie/NPC, but JON negotiated his way to get what was probably best for Aus rugby

That seems like an excellent idea, Reg. Do you have any knowledge of when they propose to start?

Agreed, Reg, but when you look at how the AFL operates we are miles off the pace.

the AFL would be using a much larger budget though wouldnt they bruce?

"The ARU is claiming credit for Melbourne's entry to Super Rugby but in fact Flowers, after awarding the Super 14 expansion licence to Perth in 2005, wrote to the Victorian Rugby Union promising that Melbourne would be given the next licence. So in effect, O'Neill was only honouring that organisational promise, although perhaps the less said about the ARU's role in how the Rebels came to be, the better"

this i find funny, as there is more corporate support that could be won over by having a team in melbourne due to television ratings etc than there was in perth but flowers decided to go with perth on people power closing major revenue lines for the ARU for 4 years, but hey, flowers promised melbourne would be next.............

the article is just funny, he grabs at half truths, fact is without the arc the aru wouldnt be in as bad a shape, if they had waited and got the revenue streams right then perhaps we would actually have a sustainable model today. i think it was more to do with ego of flowers wanting it out there and being responsable for it and oniel wanting to wash of flowers when he came back.

WJ I am a cynic, I think J'ON's decision had more to do with his KPI's & bonus structure in balancing the books than anything else.

im not saying that was what it was all about, but i have no doubt Flowers would not have rushed into the ARC and spent so much money had he felt his job was secure.
