Do you think we should get a New Zealander to head up the ARU.......

JON didn't really get the job done... shutting down Australia A was a screw up... there have been enough corporate noses in the ARU trough for a while, let’s build some respect back in the game and put John Eales in as ARU CEO...

Poisoned chalice at the moment. Whoever the next coach is likely to be, they do not want a potential Lions series loss to drown them at the starting point of their tenure.

We have RD until post-Lions.

Fuck the poisoned chalice I say. It is a matter of pride.

A coach turning down the wallabies at the moment is just as bad as quade saying he'd turn down a gold jersey.

I added the following to my original post which may answer your post:

"EDIT: Additionally, no coach worth anything will sign up to an unstable organisation. I assume Link et al will want to know what they are walking into before they accept any ARU role."

It has nothing to do with pride. The type of coach we want will invariably be a career coach. No-one will hamstring themselves or their career on a company that does not have its shit together.

Your comments are a bit hyperbolic. Would you join a company that is in a state of flux/transition, especially if the outcome is unknown to your position?

Anyone who has the ambition and talent will take the job
Tranformational language and mindset adjustment please. Too many whiners and doomsdayers around
What a way to start your tenure............belting the British Lions

If you want the job and its available, it's best to grab it. Opportunity doesn't knock that often

In the same time frame the AB's have increased their revenue and improved their net worth.
I'm not saying it's not a tough job, nor am I saying he is hopeless.
I was responding to a view that he saved the joint upon his return.
The facts show that he did not.
Edit: Just had a quick look at SA Rugby, appears they have increased their revenues significantly during JON's 2nd term and preserved their net worth.
So we were definitely the worst financial performer in the Tri nations in this period.

I don't really consider it comparing apples with apples, the Aus market is a damn sight more difficult, Rugby is the third or forth winter sport in Aus, the others should be way ahead

If the other two have grown, I could maybe live with that our growth would be a smaller number, even maybe that we had a lower growth %.

But there's no logic that we should have decline when they have growth because of our market - which has always been difficult. Otherwise we would have declined to nothing years ago

Why is it not apples and apples? Your logic might have merit if RL or AFL changed the landscape with some innovations that impacted on Rugby. We had the same internal competitors in '07 as we have in '11.
What is different in NZ & SA (our business partners)that they can grow their revenues in the same period that the ARU's diminish?
By your logic the sport is doomed in Oz, as the NZ & SA will continue to outperform the ARU financially until such time as we cannot compete financially.

Oh, and commiserations to Bruce Ross.
For what, Charger? I didn't think I needed pity. I acknowledge that I've frequently written admiringly about all that John the Magnificent has done for to Australian rugby, but I remain confident that there will remain sufficient absurdities in our sport after his passing that I will not be entirely devoid of subject matter.

In announcing his resignation Prince John said:“Being a fulltime chief executive is not something that is really for me (now) and it's better to be honest about it.” I totally concur with the words in bold.

My fervent hope is that working hand in hand with the third-generation Packer he can do as well for the casino industry as he has done for Australian rugby, thus making a material contribution to diminishing the scourge of gambling in this state.

Won't miss him. Apart from Deans, three particularly poor moves under his second reign were getting rid of the ARC, disbanding Australia A and relying on Sevens for development, and consolidating into a restricted national academy.

I believe it's only a matter of time before we get caught out on all three.

I say we get into bed with Lachlan Murdoch.
With news braking up with rugby league, we're already in bed with foxsports. Let's get financially viable and just do it.

Guys, we need to move on from the 90's

Look at just about everyone in the upper firmament of Rugby administration and journalism to now and you've got to say their best days were last century.

It's time for a new generation of pros
So now that it's away from twitter, that means you're putting your hand up formally Gags?

I'd just like to add that my best days were definitely this century.

they need a ruthless private equity firm to go in there and drop the hatchet on the deadweight. starting with the national coach

I'd suggest replacements be considered from
Jim Carmichael
Rod Macqueen
John Coates
Gillion Machlachlan (sp?)

Whoever comes in should look to engage with fox sports and 10 to find a way for one super rugby game to be shown live every week on FTA and a highlights package. with no sports i'd say 10 needs something. in the process of doing this, ARU should try and relieve 9 of the burden of having rugby...they need to cut costs anyways.

i dont agree with the hate on abandoning the 3rd tier. it was a massive money loser for an organisation that can't afford to bleed money. perhaps something should be attempted with university rugby to provide a gateway for 18-22 year olds
Melbourne, RMIT, VIC U, UQLD, UNSW, ACNU, USYD, UWS, MACQU - other unis in newcastle, the gong etc. anyways, im off track.

PE wouldn't touch the game.

in a market like australia, sports ownership is a mug's game. it's just too small. even in the AFL there's only a handful of teams that make money. even the swans barely post gains (i think 2011 was a gain of a hundred or so grand)
