John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 5
Saturday, 7 May, 2011
Kick-off times:
First Grade: 3.05pm
Reserve Grade: 1.40pm
Colts: 12.15pm
Match of the Round:

Uni-Norths (4) v Gungahlin (1), ANU North Oval
Uni-Norths play host to competition front runners Gungahlin in the John I Dent Cup match of the round this week. After a promising start to the season, the Owls now sit precariously in fourth position and will be eager to keep in touch with the top of the ladder with a victory in this important fixture. After a solid first half performance, Uni-Norths were unable to withhold a determined Vikings outfit in Round 4, eventually going down 38-17. The incisive running of centre Junior Rasolea and strong scrummaging were positives in their performance, however they will need improvement across the board if they are to come away with the win against a very consistent Eagles side.

Gungahlin’s great start to the season continued last weekend, soundly defeating Easts 57-20 at Nicholls Oval. Sparkling form by fullback Matthew Hawke was again a feature in their win, linking beautifully with his outside backs and causing havoc for the Easts defence all afternoon. Open side flanker Rutikha Ildiahia was another to stand out, scoring two tries and being a constant presence at the breakdown, supplying the Eagles backs with the opportunity to show their attacking prowess out wide. The only change to the side is Sean Connachie at half back, moving Anthony Dawes to five eighth, which should not prove to be a problem considering the form he has shown in the past in the Number 10 jersey.

Royals (6) v Wests (2), Phillip Oval
Royals are back at home this Saturday following their road trip to Wagga, where in a spirited performance they went down narrowly to Victoria 36-26. Captain Craig McMahon lead from the front with two tries and three goals and will be looking for support against an in form Wests outfit from influential back rower Soakai Tai who is a welcome return to the side this week.

Wests come into this contest in good form, showing great determination in coming from well behind to defeat Queanbeyan 46-37 last weekend in a high scoring contest at Jamison Oval. Full back Dylan Taikato-Simpson had an outstanding game, scoring one fantastic solo try and featuring in several others. Wests wingers Drew Southwell and Tom Ruediger scored five tries amongst them, showing the potency the side currently have out wide. An intriguing contest is expected at Phillip Oval, with a Royals side desperate for a win sure to cause plenty of problems for the Lions.

Easts (7) v Queanbeyan (5), Griffith Oval
Easts play hosts to Queanbeyan at Griffith Oval, with both sides eagerly looking for a victory. The tri colours again displayed some good attacking form against Gungahlin however were no match for the competition leaders. The Easts backline remains largely unchanged however the same cannot be said for the pack, where several changes have been made in order to find some winning form.

Queanbeyan travel east desperate for a win to get their season back on track. Coach Wayne Southwell will no doubt be looking to address an alarming habit of giving up leads in their matches, something which cost them victory against Uni-Norths and Wests, games they could easily have won which would see them higher on the ladder. A focused performance is expected by the Whites.

Victoria v Tuggeranong, AAMI Park, Melbourne
Tuggeranong make the trip to AAMI Park in Melbourne for the final fixture for the Victorian side in the 2011 Boag’s Shield as a curtain raiser for the Rebels v Reds match. Victoria currently sit in second position in the competition narrowly behind Gungahlin on points difference, and will be looking for a win and for results to go their way in other matches on Saturday in order to take the title.

The Vikings will be looking to capitalise on their morale boosting win at home last week against Uni-Norths. They displayed their best defensive effort of the season, holding out strong raids by the Owls in the second half eventually waring them down to record a solid 38-17 victory.

Some interesting results there. Gungahlin are a hard working club on and off the field and deserve some success, Wests looking the real deal this year? Craig Robbards is a good bloke, happy for him. Queanbeyan looking to be coming back into some form - but Royals, what's going on there?

I don't understand why Jesse Parahi isint playing for the Brumbies yet. I rate him better than Miachael Hooper

I agree with this a lot. Jesse made his comeback in Melbourne over the weekend and by reports was damaging as usual. He heads to Europe with the Australian sevens team next week.

Just watched the channelvision highlights. Wests look incredibly strong this year across the grades.

So far in, I'm tipping (1st to 4th) - Wests, Gungahalin, Uni, Queanbeyan.

Hoping that the other teams can surprise me, the JID hasn't shown a huge amount of competition across the 7 teams so far...

John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 6
Saturday, 14 May, 2011
Kick-off times:
First Grade: 3.05pm
Reserve Grade: 1.40pm
Colts: 12.15pm
Match of the Round:
Queanbeyan (4) v Gungahlin (2), Campese Field
The Queanbeyan Whites play host to the Gungahlin Eagles at Campese Field looking to capitalise
on an impressive 57-13 win against Easts last weekend. The halves combination of Tom Jones and
Jacob Kara were instrumental in the win, with Tom Jones in particular having a field day scoring
three tries and proving a constant menace with darting runs from the scrum base causing
headaches all game for the tri colours. Winger Villi Longi was also a constant threat scoring three
tries and Nathan Smith had an outstanding game with the boot. The Whites remain unchanged for
this big clash, other than Josh Goodall coming into the centres.
Gungahlin continued their unbeaten run with a solid 24-15 win against Uni-Norths in Round 5. It
wasn’t the Eagles most vintage attacking performance of the season thus far, and with the missing
bonus point the side relinquished top place on the ladder to Wests. This was a game won up front
with some solid performances from the Eagles front row and Xavier Duffy also having a good game
on the open side flank. Coach Owen Finegan would also be pleased with the defensive effort of his
side against a determined Owls outfit and will be looking for more of the same against the
defending Premiers who appear to be starting to hit their straps. Scott Davidson returns to the
second row in the only change to the Gungahlin side. A great match up is expected at Campese
Field against two of the competition heavy weights.
Uni-Norths (5) v Royals (6), ANU North Oval
Uni-Norths enjoy home ground advantage again this week and will be looking to stay in touch with
the competition leaders with a win in this important match against Royals. The Owls were their own
worst enemies at times last week against Gungahlin, having their chances to take the win but were
unable to capitalise on opportunities. Coach Adam Fahey will be looking for a more complete
performance against a Royals side desperately searching for their first win of the season. The
forward pack remains unchanged for the Owls, however some back line shuffles have been
necessary due to injury to centre Liam Gallagher. James Ambrosini comes into the side at fly half,
Jordan Macey to full back and Michael Breen moves into the centres to partner Junior Rasolea who
has been in outstanding form for the Owls so far this season.
Royals found the competition front runners too good in Round 5, going down to the high flying Lions
48-10 at Phillip Oval. The backline for the royal blues remains unchanged for this clash, however
some injuries has seen some changes to the pack with Kyron Pitta into the second row and Tom
Pelo coming into the back row for Sokai Tai. As a result Royals will be looking for another big game
from Number 8 Tyson Tamihere who has been in very good form so far this year.
Easts (7) v Tuggeranong (3), Griffith Oval
Easts play hosts to Tuggeranong at Griffith Oval, still searching for their first win of the season. The
tri colours showed some good enterprise against Queanbeyan last weekend, but too often let
themselves down with turnovers at crucial times. Lapses in defence in broken play were also
punished by the Whites with long range tries and they will need to concentrate for the full 80
minutes if they are to compete with a Vikings side, who like the defending Premiers are starting to
show some ominous form as the season gets into full swing. Robbie Lavery returning at half back is
the only change for the Easts side.
The Vikings return to Canberra following their trip to Melbourne last Friday night, where they came
away with a solid 27-17 win against a determined Victorian side at AAMI Stadium. After some
disappointing close losses in high scoring games in the early rounds of the season, the Vikings
have strung together two very good defensive efforts and will be looking to continue their climb up
the ladder this week. The two changes for the Tuggeranong side include Keane Wheeler into the
second row and Reinhold Kamillo into the centres.

John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 7
Saturday, 21 May, 2011
Kick-off times:
First Grade: 3.05pm
Reserve Grade: 1.40pm
Colts: 12.15pm
Match of the Round:
Gungahlin (1) v Wests (2), Nicholls Oval
Gungahlin and Wests play off in the top of the table clash in a fantastic round of rugby in the John I
Dent Cup Competition. The Eagles narrowly pinched top spot on points difference from the Lions
with a commanding 29-7 victory over Queanbeyan last weekend at Campese Field. Aggressive
defence and sweeping backline movements from all parts of the field proved too much for the
Whites, as Owen Finegan’s side made a clear statement to the rest of the competition that they are
the real deal this season. Fullback Matthew Hawke had another excellent game, and was a
constant threat with his direct running into the line, or setting up play for his team mates out wide.
Others to excel were centre Mitch Connelly, half Sean Connachie, hooker Pato Noriega, and Xavier
Duffy and Tim Donnellan in the back row. One of the only negatives from the game was the injury to
influential Captain Liam Winton, who will be on the sidelines for several weeks. Michael Lunde
comes into the side in the second row, and fly half Anthony Dawes returns to the side after missing
last week’s win due to illness in the only other change.
Wests come into this big match refreshed from the week off with the bye. The Boag’s Shield
winners have the pace out wide to match it with the classy Gungahlin backline in attack, and the
battle between the two in form backlines is sure to be a highlight of this game. The Lions getting out
of the blocks quicker, and lifting their intensity in defence that they have showed at times this
season is vital if they are to win this clash for the number 1 ranking. Matt Fisher into the second row
and Fergus Piekalns into Number 8 are the only changes to Craig Robberds side. This is sure to be
a thrilling encounter between the two sides that have been playing the most effective and exciting
rugby of the competition so far this season.
Queanbeyan (5) v Tuggeranong (3), Campese Field
Queanbeyan enjoy home ground advantage for a second week in the Grand Final replay between
these two great rivals. Coach Wayne Southwell will certainly be looking for significant improvement
from his side following a disappointing effort last week against Gungahlin, where they were
comprehensively outplayed in all departments by a rampaging Eagles outfit. Poor ball security and
an inability to contain the opposition raids out wide proved to be very costly for the Whites, and they
will need to concentrate on these areas if they are to replicate their 2010 Grand Final success
against the Vikings. Tim McNamara returns to the side on the blind side flank in the only change to
the pack. Sam French returns at fly half, with Jacob Kara moving to full back and Lachlan Freeth to
the wing.
Tuggeranong were clinical in their 43-15 victory over Easts last weekend, and will be looking to
continue their recent run of good form this week. Those who stood out in the performance include
half and captain Beau Mokotupu, fullback Isikele Ratulevu, second rower Tim Cree and hooker
Hugh Roach, who is enjoying an excellent start to the season. Richard Joyes and Josh Hitchens
are the new flankers for the Vikings for this match, and James Tupai on the wing and Brendon
Taueki are the other changes to the side.
Royals (6) v Easts (7), Phillip Oval
Royals and Easts clash at Phillip Oval with both sides looking to break their duck for the 2011
season. Royals came closest last week to doing so in their narrow 38-28 loss to Uni-Norths. It was
a game in which they would certainly feel they could have won after recovering well from a
disastrous start. Sokai Tai makes his return to the back row in an otherwise unchanged line up.
Easts got off to a good start scoring first against Tuggeranong last week, however once again found
the task of containing dangerous sides difficult, eventually going down 43-15. Timi Tipara starts on
the flank, whilst Robbie Lavery and John Stephenson form a new halves combination for the tricolours.
