Thought we would have all the discussion in one place on this one.

Pandaram has it now in the SMH:

James O'Connor is believed to have a signed a deal to join the Melbourne Rebels in 2012.

The Western Force and Wallabies star would be the second high-profile recruit to join the new franchise this week following the news of Kurtley Beale's signing on Wednesday.

O'Connor and Beale are known to be good friends and would have been lured by the prospect of playing together at provincial level.

Mixed feelings about this, though it would be good for Melbourne I feel sorry for the Force. Admittedly the Force took him off Queensland, but he has been doing well over there and, though they aren't winning, generally the Force are eminently watchable. And he is a big part of that.

Decent backline - Phipps, Cipriani / Gilbert, JOC (James O'Connor), Mortlock, Vuna, Some other winger, Gerrard / Gilbert. Leaves the Force looking like Tahs-lite in the backs though.

They also have Mitch Inman signed for 2012 too. I've got a suspicion he's worth a run somewhere.

Yeah, I just didn't know where to put him!! Cover Morty when he breaks, I guess.

That's my confusion as well! I'm figuring either Morty's going to hang up the boots if he doesn't make the WC squad or Inman might have to be that 'other wing' you're referring to.

He might have to be if we want to fit all of KB (Kurtley Beale), JOC (James O'Connor), Cips, Gerrard into the back line.

I hope that the Rebels start bringing some of their local products into the senior squad soon, especially as the marquee players gradually drop out. If there are not enough local rugby products as yet, then they should start poaching some U-20s mungoes.

The last thing the game in Australia needs is one rich franchise sucking up all the best talent. (We already have this happening in the Shute Shield - we certainly don't need it at the elite level).

We want to grow the game, not just exploit it.

Good call. I hope some of their newfound money go's into serious rugby development in victoria.

Give it time, Wamberal, give it time. I doubt we'll ever see a single franchise soaking up all the best players. The squads aren't big enough for that anyway.

Why haven't the Force got one of mining companies to throw a 3rd party deal at JOC (James O'Connor) to stay at the Force. I wonder about the Rugby WA, have they got their eyes on the ball. We are into our 6th season and still haven't tasted finals yet. JOC (James O'Connor) was a key component to build our team around, I wonder where we go from here and who they will be able to attract.

This is ridiculous.

Buying players to win Premierships is nothing new, but I don't think it will be good for the Rebels in the long run. People may turn up for a couple of games, but you need to win long term fans. The expectations on the Rebels will be ridiculous next season and they're only in their second season.

What happens when Beale and O'Connor leave? They aren't going to be hanging round for long. It will be a stark contrast.

So assuming Cipps goes back:

9. Phipps
10. Beibs/Gilbert
11. Vuna
12. ? maybe kingi ?
13. Stirling
14. Rooney
15. Gilbert/Beibs

Also why can't Mortlock just be a squad player? At his age he shouldn't be playing every game anyway.

I would like to seem do a similar job that ryan giggs and paul scholes are doing for Man Utd. I don't know what the rugby equivalents are because they're all over seas. There is a culture in Australia that we have to get rid of a player when they're past their peak, but the goods ones will still be able to a good job for a couple of years yet.

Let Morty chill on the bench and be an impact player. There will definitely be injuries as well in the next 2 years.

P.S. Damn annoyed with the Rebels. They've nicked 4 of the brightest young backs in the country (Inman, JOC (James O'Connor), Beale, Kingi). The point was to discover talent that wasn't being given a go not steal it. They're hoarding talent worse than the tahs. Where is Kingi going to play? I hope the tahs get him, or even the brumbies cos the guy isn't going get any playing time and he could be a great player. If link hadn't cold shouldered him after signing for the rebels he would be the 2nd/3rd string halfback in the country. Phipps is good, I rate him highly, but he was exposed to 7's and the EOYT, while Kingi had to play club rugby for a season.

I've got no problem with the Players going there as they have to do whats best for them, but its seem the Rebs have been overly aggressive in their pursuit of them.

Bit of a rant. hope it makes some sense. Probably a bit harsh on the rebs, I do like them. I just feel more sorry for the force

That would depend on what reasons they've joined for, I guess.

Well to some extent it must be money. However the change in lifestyle and playing under Rod McQueen would be the major factors I would say.

After 2 years the lifestyle won't be a change and I could imagine them wanting to get back home to their friends. They could put down roots but I would think it unlikely.

Also I can't see Rod hanging around for more than 2 years. So that would be the second motivation for them gone.

The only hope is if they're very succesful and the playing in the team and combinations is to hard to resist.

Players going to the Rebels creates opportunities for other players to get a run at the other franchises. I wouldn't panic.

That may be so with creating opportunities for other franchises but that typically means the players are either young and inexperience or fringe palyers not getting a game elsewhere. I don't see that being a solution to lifting the Force up the ladder any time soon. Look at the JOC (James O'Connor) situation. He has been developed at the Force and is just reaching his potential and now he is poached to the Rebels who will reap the rewards of his Super and Wallabies experience. We now have to start from scratch. I applaud the Rebels for being aggressive in their recruitment, I just wonder if the Force management has any idea.

Now you know how Reds fans felt when Sharpe left.
