Apart from the Japanese No 9 at the Highlanders, what other non-NZ players are there in the 5 kiwi teams?

Don't the Chiefs have the Samoan hooker in there starting line up? Plus they had the Tongan monster in 2011 (Sona Taumalolo). Can't be counting these guys as NZ players when they are capped for their respective nations.

True - well spotted Kevin0.
Mahonri Schwalger the #2 from Samoa and Captain (born in Samoa, but in NZ since teenage years)
Sona Taumalolo the Prop from Tonga. I think he is now in NH with one of the French Teams. Tongan born, arrived in NZ as 20 yr old.

What's probably going to happen is that the ARU and Link will manage the situation well, and a lot of sad, middle-aged Internet posters will be left chewing their beards.
Hope so.
Really please for QC (Quade Cooper), he's put in hard work on and off the pitch, and no doubt been mentored along the way.
Hope to see a repeat with JOC (James O'Connor).

QC (Quade Cooper) was 100% accurate with what he said last year, and 100% wrong with the way he communicated it.

Quelle surprise, it includes a quote about how hard league is, and how good league is at turning around troubled players.

Turning JOC (James O'Connor) around from a League point of view would be a piece of cake considering previous indiscretions they've had to deal with. Sleeping in, going to Bali and grabbing a bite of HJ's is nothing compared to glassing your girlfriend or taking a dump in a hotel hallway!

Aussie do seem to be playing a lot better (particularly the back line) since O'Conner was dropped. Perhaps JOC (James O'Connor) was the toxic environment Quade was referring to, and not Robbie Deans at all.

@mxyzptlk - I think you missed my point.

Who are all these troubled players that rugby leauge has rehabilitated?

I wasn't doubting that the article linked suggested it. I just think it's a figment of whichever NRL club CEO made the statement's imagination.

And the usual assumption that, being a rugby player, JOC (James O'Connor) is naturally inferior on defence to any league player.

JOC (James O'Connor) is actually a very good one on one defender, better than most league backs. JOC (James O'Connor)'s significantly better than Folau, for instance. I'd rate JOC (James O'Connor)'s defence high enough to actually be up with the top defensive league centres, and well beyond some of the top fullbacks like Slater.

Yep, you're right. A more salient question might be why League has so many troubled players to turn around in the first place, and whether that trouble began before or after they went to Canberra and got bored.

But I gotta say, I'm in the U.S., and when I see lines like those in the article, it makes me stop short -- not used to it. There's a hell of a lot of arrogance and a good dose of assumption in claiming which sport is harder and who is better at turning troubled people around. That feels more like a back yard blog post, not an article from a news source written by a trained journalist.

Canberra........ Newcastle.......... Cronulla....... Sydney's eastern, western and northern suburbs........ Queensland.........

It seems they get bored no matter where they are...........
