Januarie retires from International rugby

Stormers and Springbok scrumhalf, Ricky Januarie, has retired from international rugby with immediate effect.
“Ricky has been a great servant to the Springboks and to all the teams he has represented over a long and successful career,” said De Villiers. “He is a combative and fearless player and has been a part of some memorable Springbok performances. I wish him all the best for the new chapter in his playing career.”

Januarie has been released from his contract by DHL Western Province and will join French club Lyon in time for the start of the new European season.

“I’ve had a great run in South African rugby and have some fantastic memories but the time has come to move on,” said Januarie. “Lyon have offered me a new beginning and I want to concentrate all my efforts on helping them in their first season in the French Top 14.”

De Villiers said that he was comfortable to release Januarie as his inclusion in the preliminary Rugby World Cup squad was to offer experienced cover should other senior scrumhalves suffer injury.

“Ricky and I chatted and he knew where he stood in our Rugby World Cup plans,” said De Villiers. “He has reached the stage in his career where he wants to move on and there was no reason to stand in his way.

“He has produced some memorable moments over the years and his match-winning try against New Zealand in Dunedin will be remembered as long as the Springboks play.”

Januarie made the first of 47 Test caps under coach Jake White against Uruguay in East London in 2005 – his last was against New Zealand in Soweto last year. He collected winners’ medals at the World Under-21 championships in 2002 and Rugby World Cup in 2007 and was part of the Springbok squad that won the Castle Tri-Nations Series and the series against the British & Irish Lions in 2009.

He made his provincial debut for Boland in 2002 before moving to the MTN Golden Lions. He spent six years in Johannesburg before returning to the Western Cape in 2008 to join DHL Western Province. He recently made his 50th Super Rugby appearance for the DHL Stormers – and 93rd for all teams in the competition.

Last test: 21 August 2010 vs New Zealand in Soweto, aged 28

So now they might pick Sarel Pretorius or Francois Hougaard...

My one memory of Januarie was his intercept try against the ABs a couple of years ago to get the Boks win in NZ.

'tis the season to be jolly tralalalala lalalala. Here's to life without a fatarse Ricky tralalala lalalala.

Now we won't have a bunch of anemic, underfed Springbok rugby players. There'll be some feed left on the buffet.

Look out. Our players will be nourished.

Stoked :) Great news
must have been given the nod or was the squad already out!

With Hougaard as a back up in the wings it allows other 9 options anyway.

I think it was a chip kick not a intercept farva

I reckon Januarie knew he wasn't up to it. As much as you would hope the PDV could see that, he wasn't showing any inclination to dropping Januarie from the squad.

Well I call this one from long time ago and Blou owe me a Sydney steak for this one. First we had Bolla and him in the Stormers jersey and lost Hougaardt to the Brutes in the process. Then Bolla disappear and Dewaldt grap his oppertunity with both hands and we lost Conrad Hoffman to the Sharks. Last week against the Tin Ears it was obvious that both Schreuder and Groome is better scrummies.

Januarie always gave 100% for the Boks and that's all I can ever ask of a player once selected. He was a fierce tackler and nuggety player, didn't seem to back down to anyone on the field. Good luck in France Ricky.

Sarel Pretorious should definatly come into the squad, but fair to say du Preez, Pienaar and Hougaard will be the 3 scrum-halfs selected for the WC, even though the latter two will play most of their game time in positions other then half back.

sarel will probably only come in if some of those three get injured.

Great try that. Agree he always gave his all on the field but from many reports he had a lot of attitude issues, wasn't committed enough to training and he has many limitations to his game (crap hands, erratic passing, very average kicking game, terrible decision making etc). He can tackle. I will give him that.

Was never a word class scrumhalf.

I am still of the opinion that he was Pieter de Villiers way if giving the fans and media a big-arsed middle finger. "Complain about my selections? I'll show you."
