This is a Rugbyheaven article that I thought had some good observation. I have also never heard of the journalist Paul Cully, is he part of the new breed?

Paul Cully was writing for the SMH all last season, and possibly the season before (I can't remember).
In my opening article for this thread, I wrote
What is worrying is that there is no critique of coaches or players, no 'what ifs', just the basic facts with the odd bit of speculation
Well Paul Cully is a journo I do rate more highly - his articles have insight, and although you won't always agree with him, at least he has a go & puts different slants on things rugby.

No Free to Air, no decent Highlights even at a reasonable hour, little if any coverage in network Sports sections on TV news programs.

If you're a fan, you need to seek it out online basically or get Foxtel.

And some of it is "our fault". If there were more fans watching it on TV, there would be more ratings and more ability to get a FTA deal like League.

I think the ARU and the Super Rugby need to set a goal of getting a good FTA TV deal like the NRL has done, like the AFL have. We need the revenue that TV dollars brings. So theres your Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Then ask what the requirements are to achieve it and put in place a plan to acheive it in a reasonable time frame.

Without the money we are fighting with one hand behind our backs and our ability to grow and resist competiton from other codes is impaired. Sponsor Dollars? What do Sponsors want? EXPOSURE. That means TV. It needs ratings.

Why can't we at least have something on the other Digital channels 9 has? Half the crap on there (like Gem) is just rubbish fillers

It's interesting because as an end-user and with Foxtel the system they have right now is 100% perfect for me. Every game live, in HD, no ads broadcast by a premium service.. If Super Rugby went on FTA it would get butchered. Ads, delayed, no HD etc.
